A MODERN FAMILY: THE PERFORMANCE OF “FAMILY” AND FAMILIALISM IN CONTEMPORARY TELEVISION SERIES by Jennifer M. Fogel A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Communication) in The University of Michigan 2012 Doctoral Committee: Associate Professor Amanda D. Lotz, Chair Professor Susan J. Douglas Professor Regina Morantz-Sanchez Associate Professor Bambi L. Haggins, Arizona State University © Jennifer M. Fogel 2012 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I owe my deepest gratitude to the members of my dissertation committee – Dr. Susan J. Douglas, Dr. Bambi L. Haggins, and Dr. Regina Morantz-Sanchez, who each contributed their time, expertise, encouragement, and comments throughout this entire process. These women who have mentored and guided me for a number of years have my utmost respect for the work they continue to contribute to our field. I owe my deepest gratitude to my advisor Dr. Amanda D. Lotz, who patiently refused to accept anything but my best work, motivated me to be a better teacher and academic, praised my successes, and will forever remain a friend and mentor. Without her constructive criticism, brainstorming sessions, and matching appreciation for good television, I would have been lost to the wolves of academia. One does not make a journey like this alone, and it would be remiss of me not to express my humble thanks to my parents and sister, without whom seven long and lonely years would not have passed by so quickly. They were both my inspiration and staunchest supporters. Without their tireless encouragement, laughter, and nurturing this dissertation would not have been possible.

  • (Don't) Wear Glasses: the Performativity of Smart Girls On
GIRLS WHO (DON'T) WEAR GLASSES: THE PERFORMATIVITY OF SMART GIRLS ON TEEN TELEVISION Sandra B. Conaway A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY August 2007 Committee: Kristine Blair, Advisor Julie Edmister Graduate Faculty Representative Erin Labbie Katherine Bradshaw © 2007 Sandra Conaway All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Kristine Blair, Advisor This dissertation takes a feminist view of t television programs featuring smart girls, and considers the “wave” of feminism popular at the time of each program. Judith Butler’s concept from Gender Trouble of “gender as a performance,” which says that normative behavior for a given gender is reinforced by culture, helps to explain how girls learn to behave according to our culture’s rules for appropriate girlhood. Television reinforces for intellectual girls that they must perform their gender appropriately, or suffer the consequences of being invisible and unpopular, and that they will win rewards for performing in more traditionally feminine ways. 1990-2006 featured a large number of hour-long television dramas and dramedies starring teenage characters, and aimed at a young audience, including Beverly Hills, 90210, My So-Called Life, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Freaks and Geeks, and Gilmore Girls. In most teen shows there is a designated smart girl who is not afraid to demonstrate her interest in math or science, or writing or reading. In lieu of ethnic or racial minority characters, she is often the “other” of the group because of her less conventionally attractive appearance, her interest in school, her strong sense of right and wrong, and her lack of experience with boys.

Downloaded by [New York University] at 12:47 14 August 2016 Teen Pregnancy and Parenting Whether glamorized or stigmatized, teenage parenthood is all too often used to stand for a host of social problems, and empirical research results ignored. Identifying core controversies surrounding teen pregnancy and parenting, this book resolves misperceptions using fi ndings from large-scale, longitudinal, and qualitative research studies from the US and other Western countries. Summarizing the evidence and integrating it with a systems perspective, the authors explore ten prevalent myths about teenage parents, including: • Teen pregnancy is associated with other behavior problems. • Children of teen parents will experience cognitive delay, adjustment prob- lems, and will themselves become teen parents. • Better outcomes are achieved when teen mothers live with their own mothers. • Teen pregnancy costs taxpayers lots of money. • Abstinence education is the best way to prevent teen pregnancy. Teen Pregnancy and Parenting ends by highlighting the prevention and inter- vention implications for families, practitioners, and policy-makers. It will be of interest to academics and advanced students from a range of disciplines and professions including psychology, public policy, nursing, social work, and sociology. Brandon joins the newspaper and meets Andrea Zuckerman, the intelligent and devoted editor. A rich but reclusive girl invites the entire school (except the freshmen) to a party at her house, complete with a live rock band. Freshmen David and Scott crash the party, and the drunken Steve asks David to drive him home. David accidentally damages the car, prompting Steve to begin a frantic search for the culprit. Brandon connects with the hostess, Marianne, and goes on a date with her. He insinuates that they slept together, prompting rumors to fly at school. Andrea is disappointed in him. INTRODUCTION In 1978, Congress passed the Pregnancy Discrimination Act ("PDA"). I The explicit purpose of the Act was to prohibit discrimination by employers on the basis of pregnancy.2 Nineteen years later, employers are still insisting pregnancy is a condition "unique to women"3 that precludes them from employment in the workplace.4 The continuing attitude that pregnant women are unfit to work is especially apparent in the entertainment industry where producers continue to discharge actresses from their jobs when they become pregnant.5 The recent firing of actress Hunter Tylo exemplifies the discriminatory treatment actresses often confront if they desire to continue working while pregnant.6 1.

  • Episode #110 "What I Did on My Summer Vacation, Etc
EPISODE #110 "WHAT I DID ON MY SUMMER VACATION, ETC." Jim and Cindy are about to leave for the airport to pickup Valerie Malone, who is going to be staying in Brenda's old room. Brandon is supposed to meet them at the terminal, but Cindy calls him, in case he has forgotten. He is spending a lot of time with Kelly at the beach house now that David has moved out. Few people know of their new intimate relationship, since most of their friends have been out of town for the summer. At the airport, Brandon joins his parents, who tell him Valerie's plane will be late arriving. Glancing around, Brandon is surprised to see David Silver pushing an empty baby stroller toward the exit. David says he's just seen his father and Erin off to visit the grandparents in Cleveland. Brandon fills David in on Brenda saying she's going to remain in London for a while and become a full-time student at the Royal Academy. At Rosarita Beach in Mexico, we find Dylan just waking up from a shared sleeping bag with a lovely senorita. At the very chic Syndicate hair salon in Beverly Hills, Kelly is in a relaxed mood getting a hair style from Mimi, until she spots Donna walking over to her stylist, Chad. The two have not spoken for several months. Donna sees Kelly too, and crosses to her. Their meeting is polite but rather cool, the close friendship strained by their quarrel about David. Both Chad and Mimi notice this falling out between the former friends and wonder if there is something they can do to "mend fences." Later, they seat Donna and Kelly side by side at the shampoo sinks.

  • Put the Public Interest First
Put the Public Interest First November 29, 2006 FCC Dear FCC, RE: Docket 06-121, Media Ownership Further Notice of Proposed Rulemaking I strongly opppose any action by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to relax or eliminate media ownership limits. Media consolidation is to blame for the decline in the quality and quantity of local news, the dearth of minority ownership in broadcasting, and the homogenization of programming on TV and radio. Allowing big media companies to own even more media outlets in our local communities will only exacerbate those problems. Information -- from diverse, competitive and independent sources -- is vitally important to the health of our democracy. I urge you to hold the line against any further consolidation of our media, and to listen to the voices of the people -- not the media corporations -- on this critical issue. Sincerely, Rob Ng, Attorney at Law 733 Grimswood Ct San Jose, CA 95120-2217 Put the Public Interest First November 29, 2006 FCC Dear FCC, RE: Docket 06-121, Media Ownership Further Notice of Proposed Rulemaking Why is the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) considering relaxing or eliminating media ownership limits? As a citizen of this great land of ours I am entitled to as much diverse information as possible so I can make intelligent choices/decisions.
