Hungarian playwright Imre Madách’s prophetic play The Tragedy of Man is coming to life in front of our very eyes in the photos we see everyday and on the television screen, one scene at a time scene, or perhaps even all at the same time. Who can say where we are at the moment? In the eskimo scene of ecological catastrophe, the phalanstery of the farmer searching for a way out, or in-between the two, in empty space? And the scene in Rome? With his production of Uncle Vanya, Lithuanian director Rimas Tuminas (coming to MITEM for the third time) freed the stage from a sense of coziness, creating instead a battlefield of passions, broken dreams, and lost hopes. The Prague scene in Madách’s play? After his production of Brecht’s The Caucasian Chalk Circle, Michael Thalheimer brings us A Streetcar Named Desire, a story of the downfall of two people in a society that takes no responsibility. The London scene? The production of Sons of A Bitch by the recently deceased Eimuntas Nekrošius portrays the innermost essence of the Lithuanian people, their ancient origins, and deep-rooted survival instincts. All the scenes in one? As one reads in a review of the Odin Teatret’s production of Trilogy (first performed all parts together in Europe at MITEM), “the tree of history is growing: it is fed by life and death. -

Art in America February 2005 Pg. 84 - 91 Captivating Strangers By Gregory Volk These are good days for Kutlug Ataman, a 43-year-old Turkish artist who divides his time between Istanbul, London and elsewhere. He has a new video installation in the Carnegie International, for which he won the Carnegie Prize; he was a finalist for Great Britain’s prestigious Turner Prize; he recently presented another impressive video piece at Lehmann Maupin in New York; and he is also preparing for a retrospective at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney later this year. That’s not bad for someone who wasn’t even exhibiting visual art per se until 1997, although he has been making experimental and feature films for a while, oftentimes to considerable acclaim. Ataman and the conceptually minded sculptor Ayse Erkmen are now broadly recognized as the two premier contemporary Turkish artists; like Erkmen, Ataman is one of the few Turkish artists in recent memory to enjoy a robust international reputation. Most of his career, however, has transpired far from his home country, due to the fact that, aside from the acclaimed Istanbul Biennial, Turkey has not developed an arts infrastructure capable of supporting such a professional life. It was the 1997 version of the Istanbul Biennial, curated by Rosa Martinez, that first brought Ataman to the attention of a large international art audience, for his kutlug ataman’s semiha b. unplugged (1997), a quirky documentary concerning the (at the time) 87-year-old, decidedly eccentric Turkish opera singer Semiha Berksoy. This was also my first encounter with Ataman’s work. -

SEMİHA BERKSOY WALL OF HALLUCINATION NOVEMBER 13 2014 –JANUARY 10 2015 OPENING: NOVEMBER 13, THURSDAY 19:00-21:00 Galerist is proud to announce that it will be representing Semiha Berksoy in Turkey and abroad. ‘Wall of Hallucination’; the first gallery exhibition of the artist will take place between November 13, 2014 – January 10, 2015. This exhibition, presenting highlights from the artist’s prolific and multi-faceted career, offers a dynamic interpretation of Berksoy’s ouevre, as well as her unique perspective. A selection of paintings, audio recordings, videos, photographs, personal objects and documents will be presented through a biographic and thematic approach. Semiha Berksoy says that she sees the reflections of people whom she defines as supreme characters, leaving great marks on her life, on the ‘Wall of Hallucination’ situated in her room. Berksoy lived a life amongst spirits of her loved ones; she turned to them for inspiration and kept them alive through her paintings. The artist doesn’t see death as an end to existence but considers it a part of life. Berksoy focuses on people and incidents shaping her life through love, death and music mostly with her self-portraits. Having lost her mother at the tender age of eight, it is visible in Berksoy’s work that she used art as a medium of self-expression and as a way of holding onto life, whereas love is the source and meaning of life for her. She is committed to opera, theatre, art, people whom she is inspired by, animals, plants and to life itself with love. -

Dorothea Gillim, Executive Producer, Molly of Denali, WGBH Dorothea Gillim served as Executive Producer at WGBH for the Emmy award- winning PBS series Curious George and now oversees Molly of Denali and Pinkalicious & Peterrific. She began her television career as a writer/audio editor on the Peabody Award-winning series Dr. Katz for Comedy Central. Dorothea went on to produce Science Court for ABC Saturday Morning and TimeWarp Trio for Discovery Kids before creating her first animated comedy, Hey Monie, for Oxygen. In 2006 she created WordGirl for PBS KIDS, winner of four Emmys and a Television Critics Association Award. Princess Johnson, Creative Producer, Molly of Denali, WGBH Princess Daazhraii Johnson is Neets’aii Gwich’in and her family is from Arctic Village, Alaska. Princess is a Sundance Fellow for the Filmmakers, Producers and Screenwriters Lab, and an Emerging Voices Rosenthal Fellow with the PEN Center. She has been a member of the SAG-AFTRA Native American Committee since 2007 and also serves on the Board of Dancing with the Spirit, a program that promotes spiritual wellness through music. Her screen credits include Jericho (CBS), Big Miracle, and Uncross the Stars. Princess received a B.A. in International Relations from The George Washington University and a Masters in Education at the University of Alaska Anchorage with a focus on Environmental and Science Education. In 2015 she was appointed by President Obama to serve on the Board of Trustees for the Institute of American Indian Arts. She lives in Fairbanks with her husband, James, and her three boys and two dogs. -

These shows introduced contemporary art from Turkey, as well as a newly narrated Turkish history of modern art, to German audiences. One sampled 80 works from the Istanbul Modern collection; another presented works by 17 female artists; and a third featured six explicitly political positions.2 The following illustrations – each set of three representing one of the exhibits in the given sequence - have been used chosen from 16 press photographs representing these three exhibition events.3 These three art exhibitions took place on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the Berlin-Istanbul Partnership, and they were connected with Istanbul 2010, Istanbul’s European Capital of Culture program. They were the result of a collaboration of prominent and well- established Berlin and Istanbul art institutions, which had been founded or unified and re- structured in the 1990s. The three Istanbul Next Wave exhibits were on display in the two exhibition halls of the Akademie der Künste – on Hanseatenweg and Pariser Platz – and in the renowned Martin-Gropius-Bau. 1 The full title of the exhibit was Istanbul Next Wave: Simultaneity – Parallels – Opposites.
