These include the Holden and McAdie catalogs,' Special Publication No. 191 of the Bureau, "Destructive and Near-Destructive Earth- quakes in California and Western Nevada, 1769-1933", and a forth- coming publication of the Seismological Society of America. The period from 1928 on is covered by the series to which the present publication belongs. Earthquakes of volcanic origin in the Hawaiian and Philippine Islands are not included, and only severe shocks are included in. the case of the Philippine Islands as complete reports are published by the Manila Central Observatory.Earthquakes adjacent to the United States and felt within its borders are described only in a general way when detailed descriptions are published elsewhere. Cooperation of investigators solicited.In order that these publi- cations may be as complete as possible in the more important details of earthquakes and in references, it is desired that investigators cooperate to the fullest extent, as such cooperation will be to the mutual advantage of everyone concerned. The Bureau is willing to furnish investigators all information at its disposal consisting prin- cipally of seismographic records and post-card questionnaires ob- tained in many instances through special canvassing of affected areas.In return it is requested that preferably advance notices be furnished of results obtained so that abstracts and references may be inserted with due credit given the sources. An advance notice of a planned investigation might save considerable overlapping of effort and would give wider publicity to the work of the investigator The noninstrumental information has been furnished by a large number of individuals and organizations whose voluntary cooperation has made it possible to prepare descriptions of the earthquakes of this country with a compieteness and accuracy never before attained. Lack of space prohibits giving individual credit to all of the coop- erators.The principal sources of information are as follows: United States Weather Bureau. Among the commercial agen- cies on the west coast rendering valuable services are telephone, power, oil, railroad, and, especially insurance companies.Certain concerns interested in the earthquake-resistant qualities of their products are also active, together with various organizations of structural engineers and architects. The large number of reports received from Alaska is due largely to the efforts of Dr. C. E. Bunnell, president of the University of Alaska. Interested individuals in various parts of the country. In addition to the above sources of information, the Coast and Geodetic Survey, or its seismological office at San Francisco, can- vasses areas affected by shocks of unusual intensity.In this way the extent and the maximum intensities of all heavy shocks are deter- mined and the data are usually sufficient to construct isoseismal maps or, at least, maps of the affected areas. The seismological station of the University of California, Berkeley, and the seismological labora- tory of the Carnegie Institution of Washington and the California Institute of Technology, at Pasadena, cooperate actively in the can- vassing program arranged especially for the Pacific coast region. Notes on the regional cart hqvaice tabulations .T he destructive features of all shocks are enumerated in the abstracts, but otherwise the descriptive matter is reduced to a minimum. The original reports re open for inspection by anyone interested in unpublished details. For 1934 more detailed descriptions of earthquakes on the west coast will be found in mimeographed reports available at the San Francisco afield station. l3eginning with the 1931 number of this series, Serial No. 553, the Coast and Geodetic Survey has used and will continue to use the modified Mercalli intensity scale of 1931, in place of the Rossi- Forel scale, to designate the

  • Introduction San Andreas Fault: an Overview
    Introduction This volume is a general geology field guide to the San Andreas Fault in the San Francisco Bay Area. The first section provides a brief overview of the San Andreas Fault in context to regional California geology, the Bay Area, and earthquake history with emphasis of the section of the fault that ruptured in the Great San Francisco Earthquake of 1906. This first section also contains information useful for discussion and making field observations associated with fault- related landforms, landslides and mass-wasting features, and the plant ecology in the study region. The second section contains field trips and recommended hikes on public lands in the Santa Cruz Mountains, along the San Mateo Coast, and at Point Reyes National Seashore. These trips provide access to the San Andreas Fault and associated faults, and to significant rock exposures and landforms in the vicinity. Note that more stops are provided in each of the sections than might be possible to visit in a day. The extra material is intended to provide optional choices to visit in a region with a wealth of natural resources, and to support discussions and provide information about additional field exploration in the Santa Cruz Mountains region. An early version of the guidebook was used in conjunction with the Pacific SEPM 2004 Fall Field Trip. Selected references provide a more technical and exhaustive overview of the fault system and geology in this field area; for instance, see USGS Professional Paper 1550-E (Wells, 2004).     Upper Newport Bay Ecosystem Restoration Project Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) 1. Why is the project necessary? Upper Newport Bay is one of the last remaining coastal wetlands in southern California, and continues to play a significant role in providing critical habitat for a variety of migratory waterfowl, shorebirds and endangered species of birds and plants. Bay sedimentation has significantly increased in the last several decades due to rapid urbanization of the watershed. As a result, open water areas are disappearing in the bay, tidal circulation has diminished and shoaling is occurring within the Federal and local navigation channels and slips. Upstream efforts to control sediment inputs to the Upper Newport Bay Ecological Reserve and within-Bay dredging projects have not been completely effective. A primary objective of this project is to effect management of sediments deposited within the bay, with the objective of reducing the frequency of dredging projects while also enhancing habitat values within the upper bay and slowing the detrimental impacts of sediment accumulation on the fish and wildlife habitats. 2. What are the benefits of the project? The Upper Newport Bay restoration project will allow for a reduced frequency of maintenance dredging; improve or restore estuarine habitats; sustain a mix of open water, mudflat and marsh habitat; increase tidal circulation for water quality; reduce predator access to sensitive habitats; improve public use and recreational access; and improve educational opportunities. 3. The main event focal mechanism has been determinated from historical seismograms first arrivals. The results of this study suggest that the active Panama, Balboa and possibly the Myleland fracture zones extent through the southwestern Panama continental shelf up to connect with faults inland as proposed by BERRANGE & THORPE (1988). The Burica Peninsula medial fault zone, stratigraphically infered by CORRIGAN (1986) also seems to be active. This group of parallel northwest trending right lateral strike-slip faults interact, at least for large events. The focal mechanism solution of the 1934 Puerto Armuelles Earthquake indicates a right lateral strike slip solution with a normal component. RESUMEN: En este trabajo seha relocalizado el sismo de Puerto Armuelles dellS de julio de 1934 y sus seis replicas principales utilizando una nueva versi6n del programa de Dewey para la determinaci6n grupal de hipocentros: JHD89.     WESTERN STATES SEISMIC POLICY COUNCIL POLICY RECOMMENDATION 18-3 Definitions of Recency of Surface Faulting for the Basin and Range Province Policy Recommendation 18-3 WSSPC recommends that each state in the Basin and Range physiographic province (BRP), through consultation with state and federal geological surveys and other earthquake-hazard experts, define scientifically and societally relevant categories for recency of surface faulting (generally earthquake magnitude ≥M 6.5). WSSPC further recommends that in the absence of information to the contrary, all Quaternary faults be considered to have the recency of activity documented in the USGS Quaternary fault and fold database until more adequate data can be developed. Executive Summary Fault recency definitions are limited to the Quaternary because this period of geologic time is considered by the scientific community to be most relevant to paleoseismic studies of earthquake faults (Machette and others, 2004). The recency class of a fault is the youngest class based on the demonstrated age of most recent surface faulting. Latest Pleistocene-Holocene faults are included within the definition of late Quaternary faults, and both latest Pleistocene-Holocene and late Quaternary faults are included in Quaternary faults. Establishment/definition of surface-faulting recency categories are based on the ways that faults are portrayed on geologic maps and on the availability of geologic data in the BRP. Policy makers (owners, regulators, governmental agencies) should consult with state and federal geological surveys and other earthquake-hazard experts in using these recency categories and additional geologic data in developing definitions of hazardous faults to be considered in planning for development or infrastructure projects.

Title: Late Quaternary Faulting in the Kaikoura Region, Southeastern Marlborough, New Zealand Redacted for privacy Abstract approved: Dr. Robert 8.0eats Active faults in the Kaikoura region include the Hope, Kekerengu, and Fidget Faults, and the newly discovered Jordan Thrust, Fyffe, and Kowhai Faults. Ages of faulted alluvial terraces along the Hope Fault and the Jordan Thrust were estimated using radiocarbon-calibrated weathering-rind measurements on graywacke clasts. Within the study area, the Hope Fault is divided, from west to east, into the Kahutara, Mt. Fyffe, and Seaward segments. The Kahutara segment has a relatively constant Holocene right-lateral slip rate of 20-32 mm/yr, and an earthquake recurrence interval of 86 to 600 yrs: based on single-event displacements of 3 to 12 m. The western portion of the Mt. Fyffe segment has a minimum Holocene lateral slip rate of 16 + 5 mm/yr .(southeast side up); the eastern portion has horizontal and vertical slip rates of 4.8+ 2.7 mm/yr and 1.7 + 0.2 mm/yr, respectively (northwest side up). There is no dated evidence for late Quaternary movementon the Seaward segment, and its topographic expression is much more subdued than that of the two western segments. The Jordan Thrust extends northeast from the Hope Fault, west of the Seaward segment. The thrust has horizontal and vertical slip rates of 2.2 + 1.3 mm/yr and 2.1 + 0.5 mm/yr, respectively (northwest side up), and a maximum recurrence interval of 1200 yrs: based on 3 events within the last 3.5 ka.
