What's The Big Idea?

People don’t appreciate that they have fresh, clean, water. According to World Health Organization, or WHO, 3.4 million people die from infected water. People don’t look at those numbers twice! Most of that 3.4 million are children! People die everyday, but these deaths could be prevented, but how, how could we clean water without putting more microbes in it? Some processed water ​ ​ is ok, but it’s still not fresh water. Thankfully, all of that could ​ ​ change, and all of it is thanks to a small robot who fuels itself by eating harmful microbes. Developed by University of Bristol Ph.D student Hemma Philamore, Meet, “Row­bot.”

How Does It Work?

The “Row­bot” is self powered and based off the water boatman, a tiny aquatic animal that eats dead plants and algae. Row­bot consumes water through it’s “mouth.” Next, a microbial fuel cell, or MFC, breaks down the harmful bacteria, and with it, creates an electric current that powers the robot. This isn’t fantasy, it’s natural! MFC’s consume sugars in an airless environment, such as water.
