Women’s Actions and Reactions to Male Migration: A Case Study of Women in San Juan Guelavía, Oaxaca, Mexico by Julie Boyles A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Public Affairs and Policy Dissertation Committee: Mary King, Chair Jack Corbett Charles Heying Craig Shinn Margaret Everett Portland State University 2013 Abstract Using a mixed methods, interdisciplinary case study approach, this research project explores the benefits, risks, and challenges of male migration for women who reside in San Juan Guelavía, Oaxaca, Mexico. In a unique approach in the field of migration studies, this project considers not only women whose husbands have migrated—absent husbands—but also the impact of male migration on women whose husbands have returned as well as women whose husbands have never left— anchored husbands. Women with returned husbands and even women with anchored husbands feel the threat, worry, and fear that male migration could, at an unknown point in the future, fragment their family. This case study approach looks at how women’s work responses are differentiated by husbands’ migration status, by age, and by husband’s control over women’s activities. Women with absent husbands tend be income-producing women as well as women ages 35 to 50 far more than women 35 and under and 50 and over. With motherhood as a cultured priority of rural Mexican women, women’s income-producing opportunities are primarily limited to options within the home or in venues that can accommodate their children until the children enter school. Although this case study showed little or no connection between male migration and educational attainment, substantial policy-worthy findings suggest that the lack of value that residents of San Juan Guelavía place on the local public high school curriculum negatively impacts educational attainment of children i beyond middle school. Women’s traditional and cultural emphasis of marriage for their daughters as well as their reluctance to expose daughters to the negative influences of the city sway the decisions that women make for their daughters. ii Agradecimientos (Acknowledgements) It is with great appreciation that I thank the following individuals that have had a positive impact on my dissertation and doctoral work. POSITIONAL VERBS IN COLONIAL VALLEY ZAPOTEC 1 JOHN FOREMAN BROOK DANIELLE LILLEHAugEN UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS RIO GRANDE VALLEY HAVERFORD COLLEGE This paper describes the system of positional verbs (e.g., ‘be standing’ and ‘be ly- ing’) in Colonial Valley Zapotec (CVZ), a historical form of Valley Zapotec preserved in archival documents written during the Mexican colonial period. We provide data showing that positional verbs in CVZ have unique morphological properties and participate in a defined set of syntactic constructions, showing that positional verbs formed a formal class of verbs in Valley Zapotec as early as the mid-1500s. This work contributes to the typological literature on positional verbs, demonstrating the type of morphosyntactic work that can be done with a corpus of CVZ texts, and contributes to our understanding of the structure and development of the modern Zapotec positional verb system with implica- tions for the larger Zapotec locative system.

Reyes Morales2 RESUMEN Se analizan las condiciones socioeconómicas con base en 570 municipios del Estado de Oaxaca y de manera específica se compara el nivel de bienestar de los municipios que integran el piso de Valle del Distrito de Tlacolula, Oaxaca. En promedio la población de este valle presentó en el 2010, 74% de pobreza -por encima de la estatal- es decir, el ingreso per cápita de la población está por debajo de la línea de bienestar económico y presenta al menos tres carencias sociales que agravan de forma considerable sus condiciones de vida. Las fuentes de información secundaria fueron el índice de marginación e índice de intensidad migratoria de CONAPO de los periodos 2000 y 2010, además para conocer las condiciones socioeconómicas se agregaron otros indicadores del INEGI 2000 y 2010, los cuales no están incluidos en el índice de marginación que son: porcentaje de población con derechohabiencia a servicios de salud, porcentaje de población que labora en los sectores económicos y porcentaje de viviendas que disponen de aparatos electrodomésticos modernos; se siguió rigurosamente el procedimiento que implica la técnica estadística de análisis factorial con la aplicación del método de componentes rotados para la construcción del índice y la estratificación óptima de Dalenius & Hodges, el cual permitió determinar y conocer mejor el grado de bienestar e ingresos de las localidades del Valle de Tlacolula.

Estos componentes, dijo, están contemplados en el PTEO, una propuesta educativa que los maestros de la Sección XXII han optado por defender para que la educación en el Estado sea desde la comunalidad y participación activa de maestros, padres, alumnos y autoridades. “Para preparar alumnos críticos, reflexivos y analíticos, es importante que cada uno de los maestros de manera conjunta con los padres y autoridades asuman su responsabilidad”, dijo. En su oportunidad, el presidente municipal de San Juan Teitipac Jaime de los Santos Chávez, reconoció la importancia del desarrollo de este tipo de eventos en beneficio de los alumnos, con talleres y conferencias que contribuyen al aprendizaje y al descubrimiento de nuevos conocimientos para los educandos.

    Preserving the Language of the Valley Zapotecs: The Orthography Question Pamela Munro, UCLA ([email protected]) Language and Immigration in France and the United States: Sociolinguistic Perspectives University of Texas, September 2003 In this paper, I will introduce the Zapotec people who have come to Los Angeles, specifically immigrants from the Tlacolula District of Oaxaca southeast of Oaxaca City, and their language. My focus is a seemingly prosaic but vital and potentially divisive issue they must deal with in their efforts to maintain their language in the United States. Orthography design is the single biggest concern currently hampering this binational community's language preservation goals. 1 The Zapotecs are the third largest indigenous ethnic group in Mexico (after the Nahuatls and Mayas), numbering over 400,000 in the 1990 census. Since the 1970s a great number of Zapotec people have immigrated from rural communities in Oaxaca (the Mexican state with the largest indigenous population) to the United States, where they initially work at entry-level jobs, sending money back regularly to families left behind in Mexico. Almost all of them arrive intending eventually to return to Mexico, and many do go back, but others become US citizens and establish permanent homes here. Probably the majority of these Zapotec immigrants come to Los Angeles: current estimates place the Oaxacan population of Los Angeles well above 50,000, the majority of whom are Zapotecs. Many of the Zapotec immigrants in Los Angeles (and the rest of the United States) are undocumented. They have the usual problems of low-income workers everywhere, coupled with the special setbacks facing anyone living in the United States without a green card.
