MESSAGE Pinarayi Vijayan Chief Minister, Kerala We are living in an era of information revolution. Information is flooding around and is available at the fingertips of even the rural and deprived population. Being the first state to declare access to internet as a human right, Kerala has to exploit its full potential. The Government of Kerala is exploring all possibilities to reach out to the grass root level through e-governance and m-governance to ensure the welfare and development of all sections of our society as well as their meaningful participation. The Government is also keen on providing correct and detailed information time to time to the public through various means including conventional, electronic and social media. The Government has established fast and effective channels to provide news, videos and photos to the media. We have already initiated steps to facilitate our media to assure a democratic and dignified presence in the Government events and press meets. The Government is also taking care of the welfare of journalists, non-journalists and retired journalists in a big way which also is appreciated by the media community and their unions. I am glad to wish you all a happy New Year. I hereby present the ‘Media Handbook 2019’, which is useful to the media, government officials and the public, as a New Year gift from I&PRD. Hope you all are familiar with its mobile app, ‘PRD Media Handbook’, a smart digital companion. Pinarayi Vijayan MESSAGE T V Subhash IAS Director, I&PRD, Kerala The Media Handbook is a model and successful initiative of I&PRD, Kerala to facilitate media and to bridge the Government with media as well as public. A mobile app ‘PRD Media Handbook’ which was launched last year also became a popular app helpful even to Keralites in abroad. When the disastrous flood hit our State during the last September, the app helped several people to inform the rescue team about their beloved ones trapped in the flood and the rescue operators and the media to execute their efforts fast and effectively. I urge all our media friends, officials and social and political activists to install the app so that we can gradually reduce the printed copies of the handbook to a minimum as a green initiative. I appreciate my team for bringing out this edition on time.     Science, Technology and Development ISSN : 0950-0707 Radical, Progressive, Rationale: Aura of Abdu Rahiman Sahib in forming Community Consciousness and National Pride (Identity) (among the Muslims) in Colonial Malabar Dr. Muhammed Maheen A. Professor. Department of History University of Calicut, Kerala Abstract: The Khilafat movement which started as an international Muslim agitation against the sovereignty of the British colonial forces all over the world had its repercussions in India also, and its effects were felt among the Muslims of Malabar too. The Malabar Rebellion which started as a violent protest against the exploitation of the feudal landlords, who were mostly Hindus and the supporters of the British colonial rule, soon turned into a part of the freedom struggle and gathered momentum. But unfortunately due to the misguided directions of religions leadership what started as a struggle for freedom against oppression and exploitation soon deteriorated into the horrors of a series of communal conflicts. An examination of the Khilafat movement in Malabar would reveal that the Muslims of Malabar began to identify themselves as part of the National Muslim Community only by the dawn of the 20 th century. The political scenario of Malabar from 1920 to 1925 is specifically marked by the life and activities of Muhammed Abdurahiman.
