One of the pleasures of watching the Poirot series is to spot up and coming actors who have since hit the big time. In the case of this feature, it's Michael Fassbender, giving it plenty of smouldering moodiness amongst the murders as one of the prime suspects. Review by RoseWrsRayBans. This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth. As the police drag away the culprit, Poirot himself seems uncertain if justice was really done. Also certainly interesting to see Michael Fassbender before his career in film. Exciting to see Michael Fassbender pop up here in a mopey role, and as expected he puts the rest of the supporting cast to shame with his acting. The benefit of casting good Poirot: After the Funeral relatively unknown young actors the way they keep doing in these ITV series is that you don't automatically know how big their roles are in the plots. Beyond Fassy there isn't a lot going on in this one though. After it lulls by with some of the worst characters and red herrings it is a bit surprising that the final reveal is followed by quite an intensely indignified outburst by the killer. If only that intensity could have been spread out through the whole movie. One of the best Poirot adaptations where he isn't in the scene of the murder originally. After the Funeral mostly relies on testimonies of people and doesn't have that much other evidence. Weird seeing Michael Fassbender in the film. As the Poirot series went on, the episodes got more and more ambitious. This is one of the best, a superb murder mystery in which the culprit is right there at the start, before the murder even happens, but without careful close watching the clues can be so easily missed. As well as a strong central mystery, this has a great cast - a young Fassbender and the ever reliable Lucy Punch and Robert Bathurst. The episode has a subtle undercurrent looking at notions of justice and class - the ways in which servants are dismissed, even Poirot: After the Funeral the idle and indigent upper class, to their cost. An old man dies unexpectedly and it is found that his will has been mysteriously changed so Poirot Poirot: After the Funeral called in to investigate. It seemed strange to see Poirot investigating this case because the last time I saw this story Miss Marple was on the case in "Murder at the Gallop". This version is as it was written by Agatha Christie, god knows what the filmmakers were thinking with the other version. There's the usual old house filled with an obnoxious family and plenty of red herrings so it's well up to standard. Another good workout for the little grey cells. This might be the best feature-length Poirot episode I've seen so far, in terms of both successful adaptation which I'm truly amazed they managed to pull off considering how literary some of the narrative twists are and entertainment value. Christie keeps confusing the readers with clues while blinding them to the obvious facts right in front of them. This isn't one of my girl's best because it is "Poirot light". He only appears a handful of times but it is still fabulous because the family dynamics are Cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs and I am always in for that. Though I will admit - yes, I am forced to admit - that it has happened to me. To be always right must be sometimes monotonous. When Cora Lansquenet is savagely murdered, the odd remark she made the day before at her brother's funeral becomes chillingly important: "It's been hushed up very nicely, hasn't it. But he was murdered, wasn't he? It is more of a mystery and less of a vehicle to showcase the talents of Hercule Poirot, although he does, of course, solve the crime in the end. It so happened that they Poirot: After the Funeral desperately needed it at that time. Right after the funeral during the reading of the will one of them suggested the dead guy was helped to the afterlife - quite tactlessly I might add. The family lawyer Mr. Entwistle thought it was peculiar. A couple of days later the tactless relative was brutally murdered. Again Mr. Entwistle thought it was peculia A rich guy had decency to die just in time for his surviving relatives to inherit his money just when they needed it. After some other gruesome event no spoilers Poirot: After the Funeral. Entwistle thought it was so peculiar he decided to investigate. He knew all those people so asking them questions was not a problem. He was very much puzzled by his findings. Did you notice something? Lots of things happened, but Hercule Poirot was not in the story yet. He briefly appeared in chapter 7 only to disappear again for a really long time yielding stage to lots of people with different kinds of family drama. I have nothing against reading well-written family drama, but I was expecting Poirot instead, dammit! Finally the great detective bothered to appear, just in time to explain the mystery. Usually this behavior was typical for miss Marple, but not Poirot. In any way, his observations, deductions, and explanations were brilliant, but at this point they came Poirot: After the Funeral little, too late. I also Poirot: After the Funeral the motive for such an elaborated crime to be bland and underwhelming. All in all, as a family drama it is worth 5 stars. As a Poirot mystery it is 3 stars. The programme ran for 13 series and 70 episodes in total; each episode was adapted from a novel or short story by Christie that featured Poirot, and consequently in each episode Poirot is both the main detective in charge of the investigation of a crime usually murder and the protagonist who is at Poirot: After the Funeral centre of most of the episode's action. At the programme's conclusion, which finished with " Curtain: Poirot's Last Case " based on the novel Curtainthe final Poirot novel[1] every major literary work by Christie that featured the title character had been adapted. Clive Exton in partnership with producer Brian Eastman adapted the pilot. Together, they wrote and produced the first eight series. Michele Buck and Damien Timmerwho both went on to form Mammoth Poirot: After the Funeralwere behind the revamping of the series. The humour of the earlier series was downplayed with each episode being presented as serious drama, and saw the introduction of gritty elements not present in the Christie stories being adapted. Recurrent motifs in the additions included drug use, sex, abortion, homosexuality, and a tendency toward more visceral imagery. Story changes were often made to present female characters in a more sympathetic or heroic light, at odds with Christie's characteristic gender neutrality [ citation needed ]. Eastman chose the fourth after having Gunning darken the tone. Suchet travels to Brusselswhere he is feted by the police chief and mayor. He then goes to Ellezelleswhich claims Poirot: After the Funeral be the birthplace of Poirot, and he is shown a birth certificate as proof. Unlike the other Poirot short story collections, which were adapted into 1-hour episodes, the collection entitled The Labours of Hercules consisting of twelve short stories linked by an initial scene-setting story and a broad running theme was adapted into a single 2-hour film. The end result drew heavily on some of the stories; other stories contributed only minor details. The Poirot: After the Funeral version of " The Capture of Cerberus ", unpublished untilwas not used at all. Also incorporated into this single film was a character with the surname Lemesurier, as a nod to the short story " The Lemesurier Inheritance ", which has otherwise not been included in the Poirot series.
