Daniel Pemberton DANIEL PEMBERTON COMPOSER Daniel Pemberton is an Ivor Novello-winning, multi Golden Globe and BAFTA Award-nominated composer who has regularly been cited as one of the most exciting and original new voices working in modern film scoring today. Daniel’s recent work has included scoring Aaron Sorkin’s The Trial of the ChicAgo 7, Harry Bradbeer’s EnolA Holmes starring Millie Bobby Brown and the Netflix documentary Rising Phoenix, showcasing the stories behind the Paralympic Games. Further work includes DC Films Birds of Prey, directed by Cathy Yan and starring Margot Robbie, Edward Norton’s Motherless BrooKlyn, for which Daniel’s incredible jazz score was nominated for a Golden Globe, Richard Curtis-penned Danny Boyle-directed Yesterday, Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, Warner Bros’ Ocean’s Eight, and The DArk CrystAl: Age of ResistAnce for Netflix. Daniel’s song, performed by Iggy Pop, from his score for the film Gold, starring Matthew McConaughey, was nominated for a 2017 Golden Globe Award - Best Original Song. The previous year he was nominated for Golden Globe Award - Best Original Score for Danny Boyle's Steve Jobs, starring Michael Fassbender and Kate Winslet. Drawing on a richly diverse set of influences, from English folk to hip-hop; nordic metal to musique concrete; Daniel’s score to Guy Ritchie’s King Arthur: Legend Of The Sword is a showcase of a composer unafraid to take risks and revel in pushing the boundaries of modern film scoring. His previous collaboration with Ritchie on The MAn from U.N.C.L.E. was critically lauded for its bold writing and innovative arrangements earning him - alongside the features Steve Jobs and the Cannes Palm D’Or nominee Mal De Pierres - a nomination for Film Composer of the Year at the 2016 World Soundtrack Awards. He was previously honoured as Discovery of The Year at the World Soundtrack Awards in 2014 for his work on The Counselor as well as the features Blood, In FeAr, and Cuban Fury. Having worked in British television for over two decades on countless Emmy and BAFTA Award-winning dramas and documentaries (such as Peep Show, Complicit, UpstAirs DownstAirs, DirK Gently, Prey, Space Dive, Occupation, DesperAte RomAntics and HiroshimA) his big break into feature films came after Ridley Scott was so impressed with Daniel's debut film score in 2011 for the period supernatural thriller The AwAkening that he hired the him to score his feature The Counselor. The pair collaborated again on Scott’s first directorial foray into television, The VaticAn, on the Watergate thriller Felt, produced by Scott, directed by Peter Landesman and starring Liam Neeson, and on All The Money In The World, starring Mark Wahlberg. cool music inc | tel: 818 821 3080| www.coolmusicltd.com | email: [email protected] FILM THE TRIAL OF THE CHICAGO 7 DreamWorks Director: Aaron Sorkin Producers: Stuart M. The Interview Affair, the Sony Hack, and the Hollywood/Washington Power Nexus Today An early quasi-police procedural showing J. Edgar Hoover’s Federal Bureau of Investigation “smashing” a communist sleeper cell in Boston, Alfred L. Werker’s 1952 docudrama Walk East on Beacon looks at first much like any other Red-baiting Hollywood production of the McCarthy era. On closer inspection, the movie offers us a keen insight into the Hollywood/Washington power nexus during the Cold War. Recently declassified documents reveal that the FBI’s top brass not only helped to inspire Walk East on Beacon but also to cast and market the film. More intriguingly, America’s most powerful military Cold War think tank, the RAND Corporation, was at the heart of the movie’s screenplay. Hollywood scriptwriter Leo Rosten worked as a part-time adviser on social sciences for RAND and based key elements of his plot for Walk East on Beacon on top-secret RAND projects, principally the military uses of satellites and computers.

Benita Amalina — Fighting For Women Existence in Popular Espionage Movies Salt (2010) and Zero Dark Thirty (2012) FIGHTING FOR WOMEN EXISTENCE IN POPULAR ESPIONAGE MOVIES SALT (2010) AND ZERO DARK THIRTY (2012) Benita Amalina [email protected] Abstract American spy movies have been considered one of the most profitable genre in Hollywood. These spy movies frequently create an assumption that this genre is exclusively masculine, as women have been made oblivious and restricted to either supporting roles or non-spy roles. In 2010 and 2012, portrayal of women in spy movies was finally changed after the release of Salt and Zero Dark Thirty, in which women became the leading spy protagonists. Through the post-nationalist American Studies perspective, this study discusses the importance of both movies in reinventing women’s identity representation in a masculine genre in response to the evolving American society. Keywords: American women, hegemony, representation, Hollywood, movies, popular culture Introduction The financial success and continuous power of this industry implies that there has been The American movie industry, often called good relations between the producers and and widely known as Hollywood, is one of the main target audience. Actors mingle and clash in the best possible lighting, and conversation is fraught with wit and emotion. The director usually gets the bulk of the credit. But before he or she can play the consummate host, someone must carefully select the right guests, send out the invites, and keep track of the RSVPs”. ‘OSCARS: The Role Of Casting Director’ by Monica Corcoran Harel, The Deadline Team, December 6, 2012 Playing one of the key roles in creating that successful “dinner” is the Casting Director, but someone who is often over-looked in the recognition department. Everyone sees the actor at work, but very few people see the hours of research, the intrinsic skills, the gut instinct that the Casting Director puts into finding just the right person for just the right role. It’s a mix of routine and inspiration which brings the characters we come to love, and sometimes to hate, to the big screen. The Casting Director’s delicate work as liaison between director, actors, their agent/manager and the studio/network figures prominently in decisions which can make or break a project. It’s a job that can't garner an Oscar, but its mighty importance is always felt behind the scenes. In July 2013, the Academy of Motion Pictures of Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) created a new branch for Casting Directors, and we are thrilled that a number of members of the International Casting Directors Network are amongst the first Casting Directors invited into the Academy.

  • Writing Dialogue & Advice from the Pros
Writing Dialogue & Advice from the Pros Writing great dialogue is considered an art form. Listening to real-life conversations, watching award- winning films, and learning from the masters will help you craft dialogue that shines on the page. The following writing thoughts and advice are excerpts from Karl Iglesias’ book, The 101 Habits of Highly Successful Screenwriters. Enjoy! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Writing Unrealistic and Boring Dialogue In real life, dialogue is mostly polite conversation. In film, polite conversation is considered bad dialogue, unless it’s witty, sarcastic, or has a unique voice. The reason is that polite chat lacks tension, and tension is the key to dramatic storytelling. As Alfred Hitchcock once said, “Drama is real life with all the boring parts cut out of it.” The key to good dialogue is to understand that it’s not conversation, it’s action. What characters say in a scene should be said to get what they want in the scene. And to determine whether or not your dialogue sounds realistic, read it out loud. Garrison Keillor once advised, “If you read your work out loud, it helps to know what’s bad.” Try it. It works. Dialogue always sounds better in your head. Better to be embarrassed in your room than on the set. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Read Your Dialogue Out Loud Writing authentic, well-crafted dialogue that sparkles, individualizes characters, and entertains the reader is the ultimate challenge for screenwriters, who otherwise may have solid script elements. It’s crucial to attracting talent, which can green-light your script. Writing great dialogue can also sell the writer, for those who excel in this area are highly sought after to the tune of six figures per week for dialogue rewrites.

Read Ebook {PDF EPUB} The Woman Before by Roland Schimmelpfennig The Woman Before. The Royal Court has had very few disasters over the last couple of years but too few real delights. While pitch-black German existential comedies are not to everybody's taste, this hilarious and beautifully realised example is as good as it gets. The Woman Before has much in common with David Gieselmann's seminal Mr Kolpert , a play that opened here Upstairs at the Royal Court. Subsequently, it has built up a cult following and is regularly revived. In the UK, the plays have the same director, Richard Wilson, and translator, David Tushingham, and the style, themes and plotting make the two close Teutonic cousins. Only Caryl Churchill and Martin Crimp amongst British writers can compare with the Germans when it comes to this kind of experimental black comedy. We must therefore be grateful to the Royal Court for importing these and other important and very enjoyable German works; and giving The Woman Before space in the larger Downstairs Theatre. Frank and Claudia have been happily married for nineteen years. Nigel Lindsay plays the embarrassed Frank, while Saskia Reeves is his soon-to- be-wounded wife. Together with their handsome graffiti-artist son, Tom Riley's Andi, they are leaving the country for an eagerly anticipated new life. Things fall apart in an instant with the arrival of a beautiful visitor in a lime green coat. Romy Vögtlander stands on the doorstep and calmly announces that she and Frank were lovers for a summer 24 years before and that as he had vowed eternal love, she has come to collect on his promise.
