The prose works of the same author attracted the attention of critics from the moment of their publication, at the beginning of the present century, and although there does not exist to date any monograph dedicated to the whole production of Valle Inclan, it may be said that the importance of his novels and plays has been sufficiently indicated by a number of critics.

VERNACULAR BOATS AND BOATBUILDING IN GREECE : VOL. 1 Kostas Damianidis A Thesis Submitted for the Degree of PhD at the University of St Andrews 1991 Full metadata for this item is available in Research@StAndrews:FullText at: http://research-repository.st-andrews.ac.uk/ Please use this identifier to cite or link to this item: http://hdl.handle.net/10023/7116 This item is protected by original copyright VERNACULAR BOATS AND BOATBUILDING IN GREECE Kostas Damianidis VOLUME I A thesis submitted to the University of St. Andrews for the Degree of Ph.D. 1989 CA M11v Ac This work presents a study of the vernacular boats of modern Greece. A new typology of boats is offered, and an account is given of tools and boatyard practice, design and construction techniques. Evidence for these subjects is drawn from field surveys, museum collections, iconographic studies, and interviews with old boatbuilders. Although most of the information presented comes from the first half of the 20th century, background information from the 18th and 19th centuries is also covered. This longer historical perspective is particularly important in making comparisons between 20th century practices and the boatbuilding techniques of the past. There is evidence for the existence of two main periods of technical change in the industry, namely, the late 18th century, when new methods such as lofting were introduced, and the late 19th century, when changes in the wider shipbuilding industry initiated a process of decline in vernacular boatbuilding. At the same time however, a number of older techniques, for example certain moulding methods, survived at least into the first part of the 20th century.

Cittadella Universitaria I-94100 ENNA e-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT Aim of this paper is to investigate the traditional technologies of lifting and sea transport of large stone blocks (time spent for sea transport, ways of charging and stewing large stone pieces, number of people engaged) with evidence from 18th and 19th century Italy, as a key to understand ancient Roman practices. I shall use data from reconstruction of the 5th century Christian basilica of St. Paul at Rome, burnt in 1823, where new granite shafts, mainly from Italian quarries, replaced the Roman ones. Other documentary sources help to understand some details related to heavy transport, otherwise unknown for Roman period. It should be obviously dangerous to induce directly that the same technologies used for lifting and transport of columns in 18th or 19th century were in use also in Roman Imperial age, but the study of such processes can help us to put in the right view our reconstruction of ancient reality.

Scene 1, part 1 Teleste- Let freedom, that all fight for in their lives, Resolve our ever-contradicting play And give us meaning in our meaning’s loss; For we are tired of mourning and desire The easy recreation of our days, When, free of flesh-eating society That from the surface sloughs the spirit’s core, Our hearts rejoin integrity and marvel. Therefore, to nurture nature’s sense in us, We have retreated here to this retreat, Where, keeping warm against destructive winter, We will, like in a thought-cocoon, become Not wood nymphs, dizzy, drab, and season-drunk, But monarchs intellectual and bright. This colony I christen Ottaquecho, Signifying, in Iroquois, ‘New Leaf,’ Which you three, Margrith, Yola, Pekabo, Must certainly desire to overturn. So, all that’s left is you accept the rules Recorded in this constitution here, Whereby we will rejuvenate ourselves, And promise on our friendship, not in fear, Commitment to our program for a year. Margrith- I’m in, Teleste. My life’s been too much death: 1 Happy hour, buzzbins, tootin boys like meth. Careening thru some triple picture deal, I’m too felt up, and now I want to feel.
