Switch On For Safety Drivers are being urged to turn on their lights and set them to low beam before they start their journey to make their vehicles more visible to others on the roads and improve road safety. “Fog is a major hazard on local roads at this time of year, particularly in the early morning, and it is vital to ensure that you can see where you are going and that your vehicle is visible to others on the road”, said Lockhart Shire Council Road Safety Officer Shelagh Merlin. “If the weather is foggy and your car is fitted with fog lamps, switch them on, but remember to switch them off again as soon as the fog has cleared. The NSW Road Rules state that you may only use fog lights when driving in fog, mist or other atmospheric conditions that restrict visibility and you must not use any light on your vehicle that may dazzle another road user. In addition to switching on the vehicle‟s lights, motorists are being urged to slow down when driving in adverse weather conditions such as fog, rain and snow. “Most of our rural roads carry a posted speed limit of 100 km/h, however it is often unsafe to travel at anywhere near that speed, particularly in rain and fog”, Mrs Merlin added “Slow down to a speed that is safe for the prevailing conditions, increase the braking distance between your vehicle and the vehicle in front and allow extra travel time so that you can focus on the driving task without worrying about the possibility of being late”, she concluded. For information on safe driving, go to www.roadsafety.transport.nsw.gov.au For further information please contact: Shelagh Merlin, Road Safety Officer, M: 0427 224 764 Swimming Pools Amendment Act 2012 NSW Government Premier & Cabinet division of Local Government

Responding with Encouragement Here is the latest from the monthly general meeting of the Spirit of the Land Lockhart Festival held on Wednesday 10th July. Registrations have been sent to artists and sculptors calling for entries in the various awards and exhibitions held during the festival. It won't be long now before we start receiving responses re-affirming that the festival is on track for 2013. Likewise encouraging replies to sponsorship requests are coming in, but a big thank you from the committee to our local community for your support so far, and especially to those who have already responded so warmly to the “Friends of the Festival” membership drive. The envelopes in the mailbox this week have been a joy to open and a wonderful reminder of how important the festival is to you, and our community. Thank you also to the Lockhart and District Community Bank for their generous donation of funds to purchase a sculpture for the town. In light of this year's change to the Lockhart Shire Council's sponsorship of the National Farm Art Sculpture Award, this donation will continue the annual tradition of acquiring public art arising from the festival. It is also worth noting at this time that other community and individual efforts have contributed over the years to the town's public art attractions. A thank you to the Lockhart Progress Association for their continuing work on the Pastoral Shadows of Brookong Project. A reminder that everyone is invited to the next general meeting to be held at 7.30pm on Wednesday 14th August 2013 in the Lockhart Ex-Servicemen's Club Auditorium. ACTION WITH SOUTHERN BIPLANES Firm expressions of interest are required for a visit by Southern Biplanes to this year‟s festival. Rides will be offered to the public on both days from the Lockhart airstrip. Estimated cost for 20 – 30 minute rides will be $300 per person. Please forward names to Jim Morgan (0428 295 237) or Mandy Strong (6920 5593).

Let‟s Take Charge! Leadership … volunteering… contributing. Who does this in your community? Is it you? Is it your friends? Is it your parents and grandparents? Riverina youth … it‟s time for you to make a stand and show the community that you are the leaders of the future – and we‟re going to give you the tools you need to do it! Get leadership skills and charge into volunteering via the Take Charge project being run by REROC (Riverina Eastern Regional Organisation of Councils) The project has three steps, to help develop leadership skills and volunteering for younger people. 1 – Why don‟t you volunteer? What would you do if you did volunteer? That‟s the sort of stuff we want you to tell us… and you could win one of 10 $20 iTunes gift cards or phone credit just for doing completing our survey! Social media (as well as more traditional means) is being used to spread the word, and distribute the survey, so click over to the www.facebook.com/YouthROCriverina and like our page to keep up to date with all things youth in your Riverina. 2 – The first Take Charge leadership forum is set down for late August, with some pretty cool workshops and guest speakers rolling in. You‟ll have to apply to attend, so, again, keep an eye on the YouthROC Facebook page for more. 3 – We are developing a volunteering program just for young people. It will bring together the organisations who need helpers and young people who want to lend a hand in industries where they might want to work in the future. A website will be launched to help young people find volunteer work in their town, and where organisations can list their vacancies. You will also receive some really cool rewards for participating in the program.. The best way to stay in touch with all the YouthROC news is on our Facebook page – and make sure you tell your friends about it! You can also find out more from REROC‟s Youth and Communities contact, Kylie Dunstan, on [email protected] or 0437 863 426. ROCKING AT THE ROCK On Wednesday 3rd & Thursday 4th July the hall at The Rock was really rocking!!! Lockhart Shire Council sponsored The Indigenous Hip Hop Projects (IHHP) to provide a 2 day workshop for youth in the Shire The program was extremely well received and had 23 young people aged 5-17 attend each day. IHHP promotes leadership programs based upon individual aspiration and community transformation utilising the international phenomena of “Hip Hop” dance and music IHHP works on the principle of using „arts for change‟ focussing on young peoples strengths, developing their skills and attitudes, IHHP works closely with partners such as Lockhart Shire Council to support community development and development of social and emotional wellbeing. More about their programs can be found at www.indigenoushiphop.com The feedback from the attendees was phenomenal and students are begging for more opportunities to develop their skills in the art of dance and music. Lockhart Shire Council will aim to provide more of this type of holiday program in the future. To view more photos of the day and for future information on youth programs go to the Council website www.lockhart.nsw.gov.au Big thanks to the community helping to make this a success with promoting the program (word of mouth), and local businesses for giving such positive feedback and ideas. Thanks to all the kids who attended you were polite, fun, confident and inclusive of others. You are all awesome!!!! Some feedback I received from parents: „Just letting you know that my kids had a great time at the workshop. If there’s anything else you’re doing during the next school holidays please let me know and I can pass the word around.’ ‘I would like to say thank you for organising a great jam packed day for my girls with the IHHP!!! They were awesome and my girls loved it!!!! Thankyou! Anything in the future that is going on please let me know!!!! The IHHP crew were fantastic and very professional!!!! (Although my 4 year old boy who wasn't in the class is trying to do 'walking back flips off the wall!!’)’ Bring on the next program….. Kylie Youth Development Officer, Lockhart Shire Council
