  • Black's Morayshire Directory, Including the Upper District of Banffshire
tfaU. 2*2. i m HE MOR CTORY. * i e^ % / X BLACKS MORAYSHIRE DIRECTORY, INCLUDING THE UPPER DISTRICTOF BANFFSHIRE. 1863^ ELGIN : PRINTED AND PUBLISHED BY JAMES BLACK, ELGIN COURANT OFFICE. SOLD BY THE AGENTS FOR THE COURANT; AND BY ALL BOOKSELLERS. : ELGIN PRINTED AT THE COURANT OFFICE, PREFACE, Thu ''Morayshire Directory" is issued in the hope that it will be found satisfactorily comprehensive and reliably accurate, The greatest possible care has been taken in verifying every particular contained in it ; but, where names and details are so numerous, absolute accuracy is almost impossible. A few changes have taken place since the first sheets were printed, but, so far as is known, they are unimportant, It is believed the Directory now issued may be fully depended upon as a Book of Reference, and a Guide for the County of Moray and the Upper District of Banffshire, Giving names and information for each town arid parish so fully, which has never before been attempted in a Directory for any County in the JTorth of Scotland, has enlarged the present work to a size far beyond anticipation, and has involved much expense, labour, and loss of time. It is hoped, however, that the completeness and accuracy of the Book, on which its value depends, will explain and atone for a little delay in its appearance. It has become so large that it could not be sold at the figure first mentioned without loss of money to a large extent, The price has therefore been fixed at Two and Sixpence, in order, if possible, to cover outlays, Digitized by the Internet Archive in 2010 with funding from National Library of Scotland http://www.archive.org/details/blacksmorayshire1863dire INDEX.

  • PUBLIC PETITION NO. PE01541 Name Of
PUBLIC PETITION NO. PE01541 Name of petitioner Chris Cromar Petition title 'Flower of Scotland' to be officially recognised as Scotland's national anthem Petition summary Calling on the Scottish Parliament to urge the Scottish Government to Offically recognise 'Flower of Scotland' as Scotland's national anthem. Action taken to resolve issues of concern before submitting the petition In my time as a Member of the Scottish Youth Parliament (MSYP) I discussed this issue with many young people who believed that ‘Flower of Scotland’ should be officially recognised as Scotland’s national anthem. Also, I have spoken to friends and family members who already think that ‘Flower of Scotland’ is Scotland’s official national anthem, just like many others across Scotland. I have also looked into the history of the Scottish Parliament’s role in recognising a national anthem for Scotland and realise that there has been much demand for Scotland to have an officially recognised national anthem for many years now. This year’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow showed why ‘Flower of Scotland’ should be recognised as Scotland’s national anthem as the incredible passion of the athletes and spectators singing the song was unbelievable. Also, ‘Flower of Scotland’ is performed with passion before and during football and rugby union matches at Hampden and Murrayfield respectively. I have also looked at many opinions polls regarding an official national anthem for Scotland and these show that ‘Flower of Scotland’ is by far the most popular choice and now is the time to officially recognise it as Scotland’s national anthem. Petition background information ‘Flower of Scotland’ also known as ‘Flùr na h-Alba’ in Scottish Gaelic and ‘Flouer o Scotland’ in Scots is widely recognised as Scotland’s unofficial national anthem.

  • YMI Whistle Resources
Introduction Fàilte! The Whistle is known to be one of the oldest instruments found in Scotland, be it wood, metal, clay, reed, or bone, for over 2,400 years our Scottish descendants have produced beautiful music from this simple instrument. From the oldest designs found at Oakbank Crannog, around 600-400BC, to the most recent seen in today’s modern and vibrant Folk scene, this versatile instrument carries much of Scotland’s musical history and heritage with it. This resource has been designed for tutors and teachers who wish to teach the Whistle and the heritage with which it is associated. Since 2003 Fèisean nan Gàidheal has employed professional musicians to teach Scottish Traditional music in Primary Schools as part of the Youth Music Initiative (YMI). Through this initiative, many thousands of pupils have been introduced to Traditional music and have engaged with their cultural past and present. This pack is specifically designed to bring pupils on from the level of ‘complete beginner’ to ‘confident Whistle player’. Whistle students will also learn how to read standard notation and learn the story or history of the tunes they play. Included in the pack are; notes on each tune and the possible difficulties students may face, lyrics which are associated with the tunes for tutors, activities which can be introduced into the lesson, tips on class discipline and class structure, information on whistle ornamentation, and a progressive system which allows both tutors and students to assess their competency level on the Whistle. Since 2003, this programme has been tried and tested by YMI tutors with much success.

  • Minutes of the Committee Meeting of the Edinburgh
REPORT OF THE MEETING OF THE EAST OF SCOTLAND BRANCH OF ATAXIA UK LASSWADE HIGH SCHOOL CENTRE, SATURDAY 12 SEPTEMBER 2009 http://www.ataxia-east-scotland.org.uk Present: Derek Main (Chairman), Ronnie Browne, Liz & Pete Dalby, Penny Gardner, John Reid, Richard & Anne-Marie Thomson, and Frances Wright. Apologies: Andrea Bothwell, George Foulkes, Anne Green, John Hunter, Susan McPheat, Jim Shepherd, Dr Jon Stone, Tom & Doreen Vandepeear. 1. Welcome and Minutes of last Meeting Derek welcomed everyone no need for the usual introductions as we all know each other. The report of the May 2009 AGM will be sent out later. 2. Chairman’s Remarks Derek welcomed everyone to the meeting. 3. Speaker: Ronnie Browne Ronnie opened by saying he was going to tell us a true story, based on the beginnings of the Corries. In 1954 he enrolled at Edinburgh College of Art. Roy Williamson was also studying there and they knew each other, but not well. Roy played for Edinburgh Wanderers and Ronnie for Boroughmuir. In 1959 they both went to Moray House teacher training college and Roy was in a skiffle group, then in a folk trio. One night a member of the trio got glandular fever and Ronnie stood in, he knew 2 songs & joined them – it was called the Corrie folk trio. A corrie is a dip in a hillside; these were used for religious meetings all over Scotland so the name seemed appropriate. Their first engagement was in the Waverley bar on a corner of the High Street. Sandy Buchan owned a coffee house called the Tryst, and engaged them for 3 weeks of the Edinburgh Festival in 1961.

  • Fasc Facts January 2019
A Review of Famous Songs of the Past ‘Fascinating Facts’ January 2019 Track 1 The Hokey Pokey The hokey cokey (United Kingdom) or hokey pokey (United States, Canada, Ireland, Australia), is a participation dance with a distinctive accompanying tune and lyric structure. It is well known in English-speaking countries. It is of unclear origin. Ray Anthony (born January 20, 1922) is an American bandleader, trumpeter, songwriter, and actor. He is the last surviving member of the Glenn Miller Orchestra. Track 2 Blow The Wind Southerly A traditional English folk song from Northumbria. It tells of a woman desperately hoping for a southerly wind to blow her lover back home over the ocean to her. Kathleen Ferrier recorded what is perhaps the best-known version of the song in London in 1949. Kathleen Mary Ferrier, CBE (22 April 1912 – 8 October 1953) was an English contralto singer who achieved an international reputation as a stage, concert and recording artist, with a repertoire extending from folksong and popular ballads to the classical works of Bach, Brahms, Mahler and Elgar. Track 3 Jamaica Farewell This track is a calypso tune about the beauty of the West Indian Islands. It was Belafonte who popularised the song outside the Caribbean Islands. Harry Belafonte, born Harold George Bellanfanti, Jr in Harlem, New York, From 1932 to 1940, he lived with his grandmother in her native country of Jamaica. In the 1940s he became interested in American Negro Theater. He and Sidney Poitier, both financially struggling, regularly purchased a single seat to local plays, trading places in between acts, informing the other about the progression of the play.

1 Ale, Glorious Ale (trad.) `Alf a Pint of Ale (Gus Elen) 1. For breakfast I likes a little bit of toast, Now when I were a young man my father did say And `alf a pint of ale. Summer`s a coming it’s time to make hay And for dinner I likes a little bit of meat, Now when hays been carted don’t you ever fail And `alf a pint of ale. To drink gaffer`s health in a pint of good ale. Now for tea I likes a little bit o` fish, And `alf a pint of ale. Ch. But for supper I likes a crust of bread and cheese, Ale, ale, glorious ale And a gallon and a half of ale. Served up in pewter it tells it’s own tale Some folks likes radishes some curly kale All Around My Hat (trad.) But give I boiled parsnips and a gurt dish of taters And a lump of fatty bacon and a pint of good ale. Chorus All around my hat, I will wear the green willow, And all around my hat, for a twelve-month and a day. 2. Now take those teetotallers they drinks water neat. And if anyone should ask me the reason why I'm wearin' it, It's all for my true love who's far, far, away It must rot their gutsies and give ‘em damp feet. Now I always say that a man can’t grow stale On boiled beef and bacon and a pint of good ale.

Briefing for the Public Petitions Committee Petition Number: PE01541 Main Petitioner: Chris Cromar Subject: 'Flower of Scotland' to be officially recognised as Scotland's national anthem Calls on the Parliament to urge the Scottish Government to officially recognise 'Flower of Scotland' as Scotland's national anthem. Background The song ‘Flower of Scotland’ was written by Roy Williamson of the Corries in 1968 and performed for the first time on television in the same year. It was based on the battle of Bannockburn. In 1974, the song was adopted, with altered words, as the tour song by the British and Irish Lions rugby team for their tour of South Africa. On their return the players sang the song on television giving the tune wider coverage. The song was adopted as the Scotland team’s pre-game anthem during the 1990 Five Nations championship. Since then it has been played at more sporting events. The Scottish Football Association adopted it as the pre-game anthem in 1997, although it was first used by them in 1993. Usually, only the first and third verses are sung. The song was used as the victory anthem of Team Scotland at the Commonwealth Games in India in 2010, replacing Scotland the Brave. The BBC World Service produced a programme in its Witness series on Flower of Scotland, which included an interview with the surviving member of the Corries, Ronnie Browne. Scottish Government Action During the referendum campaign the Scottish Government published a consultation on a draft Independence Bill, to be introduced in the event of a yes vote.
