PE01541 Name of petitioner Chris Cromar Petition title 'Flower of Scotland' to be officially recognised as Scotland's national anthem Petition summary Calling on the Scottish Parliament to urge the Scottish Government to Offically recognise 'Flower of Scotland' as Scotland's national anthem. Action taken to resolve issues of concern before submitting the petition In my time as a Member of the Scottish Youth Parliament (MSYP) I discussed this issue with many young people who believed that ‘Flower of Scotland’ should be officially recognised as Scotland’s national anthem. Also, I have spoken to friends and family members who already think that ‘Flower of Scotland’ is Scotland’s official national anthem, just like many others across Scotland. I have also looked into the history of the Scottish Parliament’s role in recognising a national anthem for Scotland and realise that there has been much demand for Scotland to have an officially recognised national anthem for many years now. This year’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow showed why ‘Flower of Scotland’ should be recognised as Scotland’s national anthem as the incredible passion of the athletes and spectators singing the song was unbelievable. Also, ‘Flower of Scotland’ is performed with passion before and during football and rugby union matches at Hampden and Murrayfield respectively. I have also looked at many opinions polls regarding an official national anthem for Scotland and these show that ‘Flower of Scotland’ is by far the most popular choice and now is the time to officially recognise it as Scotland’s national anthem. Introduction Fàilte! The Whistle is known to be one of the oldest instruments found in Scotland, be it wood, metal, clay, reed, or bone, for over 2,400 years our Scottish descendants have produced beautiful music from this simple instrument. From the oldest designs found at Oakbank Crannog, around 600-400BC, to the most recent seen in today’s modern and vibrant Folk scene, this versatile instrument carries much of Scotland’s musical history and heritage with it. This resource has been designed for tutors and teachers who wish to teach the Whistle and the heritage with which it is associated. Since 2003 Fèisean nan Gàidheal has employed professional musicians to teach Scottish Traditional music in Primary Schools as part of the Youth Music Initiative (YMI). Through this initiative, many thousands of pupils have been introduced to Traditional music and have engaged with their cultural past and present. This pack is specifically designed to bring pupils on from the level of ‘complete beginner’ to ‘confident Whistle player’. Whistle students will also learn how to read standard notation and learn the story or history of the tunes they play. Included in the pack are; notes on each tune and the possible difficulties students may face, lyrics which are associated with the tunes for tutors, activities which can be introduced into the lesson, tips on class discipline and class structure, information on whistle ornamentation, and a progressive system which allows both tutors and students to assess their competency level on the Whistle. Since 2003, this programme has been tried and tested by YMI tutors with much success. -

Changes in the Teaching of Folk and Traditional Music: Folkworks and Predecessors Thesis M. Price Submitted in fulfilment of the degree of PhD Newcastle University November 2017 i Abstract Formalised folk music education in Britain has received little academic attention, despite having been an integral part of folk music practice since the early 1900s. This thesis explores the major turns, trends and ideological standpoints that have arisen over more than a century of institutionalised folk music pedagogy. Using historical sources, interviews and observation, the thesis examines the impact of the two main periods of folk revival in the UK, examining the underlying beliefs and ideological agendas of influential figures and organisations, and the legacies and challenges they left for later educators in the field. Beginning with the first revival of the early 1900s, the thesis examines how the initial collaboration and later conflict between music teacher and folk song collector Cecil Sharp, and social worker and missionary Mary Neal, laid down the foundations of folk music education that would stand for half a century. A discussion of the inter-war period follows, tracing the impact of wireless broadcasting technology and competitive music festivals, and the possibilities they presented for both music education and folk music practice. The second, post-war revival’s dominance by a radical leftwing political agenda led to profound changes in pedagogical stance; the rejections of prior practice models are examined with particular regard to new approaches to folk music in schools. Finally, the thesis assesses the ways in which Folkworks and their contemporaries in the late 1980s and onward were able to both adapt and improve upon previous approaches. -

A Review of Famous Songs of the Past ‘Fascinating Facts’ January 2019 Track 1 The Hokey Pokey The hokey cokey (United Kingdom) or hokey pokey (United States, Canada, Ireland, Australia), is a participation dance with a distinctive accompanying tune and lyric structure. It is well known in English-speaking countries. It is of unclear origin. Ray Anthony (born January 20, 1922) is an American bandleader, trumpeter, songwriter, and actor. He is the last surviving member of the Glenn Miller Orchestra. Track 2 Blow The Wind Southerly A traditional English folk song from Northumbria. It tells of a woman desperately hoping for a southerly wind to blow her lover back home over the ocean to her. Kathleen Ferrier recorded what is perhaps the best-known version of the song in London in 1949. Kathleen Mary Ferrier, CBE (22 April 1912 – 8 October 1953) was an English contralto singer who achieved an international reputation as a stage, concert and recording artist, with a repertoire extending from folksong and popular ballads to the classical works of Bach, Brahms, Mahler and Elgar. Track 3 Jamaica Farewell This track is a calypso tune about the beauty of the West Indian Islands. It was Belafonte who popularised the song outside the Caribbean Islands. Harry Belafonte, born Harold George Bellanfanti, Jr in Harlem, New York, From 1932 to 1940, he lived with his grandmother in her native country of Jamaica. In the 1940s he became interested in American Negro Theater. He and Sidney Poitier, both financially struggling, regularly purchased a single seat to local plays, trading places in between acts, informing the other about the progression of the play.
