Introduction The place-names in this book were collected as part of the Arts and Humanities Research Board-funded (AHRB) ‘Norse-Gaelic Frontier Project, which ran from autumn 2000 to summer 2001, the full details of which will be published as Crawford and Taylor (forthcoming). Its main aim was to explore the toponymy of the drainage basin of the River Beauly, especially Strathglass,1 with a view to establishing the nature and extent of Norse place-name survival along what had been a Norse-Gaelic frontier in the 11th century. While names of Norse origin formed the ultimate focus of the Project, much wider place-name collection and analysis had to be undertaken, since it is impossible to study one stratum of the toponymy of an area without studying the totality. The following list of approximately 500 names, mostly with full analysis and early forms, many of which were collected from unpublished documents, has been printed out from the Scottish Place-Name Database, for more details of which see Appendix below. It makes no claims to being comprehensive, but it is hoped that it will serve as the basis for a more complete place-name survey of an area which has hitherto received little serious attention from place-name scholars. Parishes The parishes covered are those of Kilmorack KLO, Kiltarlity & Convinth KCV, and Kirkhill KIH (approximately 240, 185 and 80 names respectively), all in the pre-1975 county of Inverness-shire. The boundaries of Kilmorack parish, in the medieval diocese of Ross, first referred to in the medieval record as Altyre, have changed relatively little over the centuries. -

Community Safety Partnership Report Issue 2022 September 2018 Community Safety Community Safety is about protecting people’s rights to live in confidence without fear for their own or other people’s safety ensuring that people are safe from crime, disorder and danger and free from injury and harm and communities are socially cohesive and tolerant; are resilient and able to support individuals to take responsibility for their wellbeing The Community Safety Partnership aims to improve community safety across Moray by identifying and addressing immediate concerns in order to protect the most vulnerable and at risk and be proactive to ensure that communities feel safe. The CSP comprises of various Moray Council services, Police Scotland, Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, NHS Grampian, tsiMORAY and Registered Social Landlords. WATER SAFETY With the continuing warm weather it is always tempting to go swimming to cool off. Water may look safe, but it can be dangerous. Learn to spot and keep away from dangers. You may swim well in a warm indoor pool, but that does not mean that you will be able to swim in cold water. The project also included historical research and the eventual outcome was the publication of a book, “Glen Feshie – The History and Archaeology of a Highland Glen”. One of the fascinating aspects of Glen Feshie was its associations with the Duchess of Bedford, Sir Edwin Landseer and the shooting estate in the 1820s and 1830s. -

PREFACE The material for " The Rulers of Strathspey" was originally collected by the Author for the article on Ogilvie-Grant, Earl of Seafield, in The Scots Peerage, edited by Sir James Balfour Paul, Lord Lyon King of Arms. A great deal of the information collected had to be omitted OAving to lack of space. It was thought desirable to publish it in book form, especially as the need of a Genealogical History of the Clan Grant had long been felt. It is true that a most valuable work, " The Chiefs of Grant," by Sir William Fraser, LL.D., was privately printed in 1883, on too large a scale, however, to be readily accessible. The impression, moreover, was limited to 150 copies. This book is therefore published at a moderate price, so that it may be within reach of all the members of the Clan Grant, and of all who are interested in the records of a race which has left its mark on Scottish history and the history of the Highlands. The Chiefs of the Clan, the Lairds of Grant, who succeeded to the Earldom of Seafield and to the extensive lands of the Ogilvies, Earls of Findlater and Seafield, form the main subject of this work. -

Minutes of Previous Meeting The minutes of the meeting held 5th December were retrospectively agreed by Suzanne Mayle and seconded by Dougie Gibson. Office Bearers: Iain Reid has received a letter of resignation from the Community Council from Ivan McConachie, effective immediately. JD advises that a Chair will need to be selected from the ELECTED Members prior to the upcoming AGM. The make-up of the Community Council now has 3 vacancies, however there are 3 residents willing to get involved - Carl Stewart, Ewan Grant and Rosemary Shreeve. The Community Council will take steps to approach these people and co-opt them prior to the AGM. Matters arising/ongoing items 1. Police Issues - the regular monthly report had been submitted by NC via email. It does not breakdown statistics for the parish as such but seems to include them within the Grantown-on-Spey figures. IR has emailed Inspector MacLeod to see if Cromdale & Advie can be presented with statistics for the parish separately. 2. Bank Account – SM advised via email that the balance of the accounts currently stood at £3807.07 and that the new signatory regime has been put in place. -
