Course title in English Cinema and Ideology: the German and Scandinavian Traditions

Short course annotation in English (up to 500 characters) By analyzing films made by and about German and Scandinavian subjects and citizens, the course introduces students to political and cultural history and trends in Germany, Norway, Denmark, and Sweden over the past century. The thematic focus on ideology centers the readings on the intersections of politics, history, and culture in these respective (and yet related) cultures. The course material places special empahsis on how German and Scandinavian political and cultural history relates tothe Baltic Region as as whole.

Prerequisites for entering the course -

Study outcomes (up to 600 symbols) Students will learn how the historical political and cinematic discourses surrounding religion, class, and gender in Germany and Scandinavia have led to certain present political circumstances in those regions; They will know major political and cultural trends of the 20th centuries in Germany, Norway, Denmark, and Sweden; This course will engage in comparative study of the various differences in these countries’ modern cultural, ideological, and political systems; Students will use this course material as a springboard to other regional Baltic interests, including comparison to the Baltic states, and Lithuanian in particular.
