Both were larger-than-life characters whose unwavering AS A NONPROFIT commitment to the Theatre proved vital to our long-term success. In 1989, members of the community rallied to save the now-thriving Coolidge Corner Theatre from demolition and redevelopment. Against great odds, they succeeded.

This year, we celebrated the heroes behind this grassroots victory and our 30th birthday as a nonprofit film and cultural institution.

Brookline Public Library Exhibit

In fall 2019, The Brookline Public Library hosted an exhibit to celebrate this anniversary milestone, featuring more than fifty items, including vintage advertisements from Remembering David Kleiler (1940 - 2019) the very early years of the Theatre, “Save the Coolidge” Campaign memorabilia, and The Coolidge Corner Theatre mourns the loss of David Kleiler, film aficionado, teacher photographs and posters for major films and for the Coolidge Award, which has extraordinaire and, after leading the charge to save the Coolidge in 1989, our first honored film artists such as Meryl Streep, Michael Douglas, Werner Herzog, Jane Fonda, Executive Director. and Julianne Moore. The Passion of Joan of Arc The Berklee Orchestra (BSFO) returned to the Coolidge for their tenth silent film concert with The Sounds of Silents®. The award-winning group performed their latest Coolidge-commissioned score, live-to-picture, for the groundbreaking and deeply moving silent classic The Passion of Joan of Arc (1929), directed by Carl Theodor Dreyer.

As in prior years, this year’s grantees include art house theaters and nonprofit organizations in every corner of the country, from Florida to Alaska and Maine to Hawaii.
