Inside this issue: IMDA Recognizes Dancers 2 Educational Grants Available Thanks You 6 For Irish Music and Dance Students Open Mic Night 7 The Irish Music and Dance Association (IMDA) would like to lend a hand to students of Irish music, dance or cultural pursuits. We’re looking for students who have already made a significant commitment to their studies, and who could use some help to get to the next level. It may be that students are ready to improve their skills (like fiddler and teacher Mary Vanorny who used her grant to study Sligo-style fiddling with Brian Conway at the Portal Irish Music Week) or it may be a student who wants to attend a special class (like Irish dancer Annie Wier who traveled to Boston for the Riverdance Academy). These are examples of great reasons to apply for an IMDA Educational Grant – as these students did in 2017. 2018 will be the twelfth year of this program, with help extended to 43 musicians, dancers, language students and artists over the years. The applicant may use the grant in any way that furthers his or her study – help with the purchase of an instrument, tuition to a workshop or class, travel expenses – the options are endless. Previous grant recipients have included musicians, dancers, Irish language students and a costume designer, but the program is open to students of other traditional Irish arts as well. -

Mid-America Standardized Syllabus for December 1, 2015 – November 30, 2016 Please Note: IN EFFECT AND APPLICABLE FOR ALL FEISANNA AS OF 12-1-14. It is strongly PREFERRED AND ENCOURAGED that each feis use the numbering system contained in this Standardized Syllabus for the sake of consistency and clear communication and understanding. However, each Feis may use their own numbering system if they so desire. The attached numbering system is encouraged and was put together by Jack Richens and is based on the following: . 1st Digit – Category: FIRST FEIS Dances all begin with 1, and so forth . 2nd and 3rd Digits – Age Group, Girls begin at 01 and Boys begin at 51 . 4th and 5th Digits (Letters) – Dance Type RL = REEL, LJ = LIGHT JIG, SN = SINGLE JIG, SJ = SLIP JIG, TJ = TREBLE JIG, HP = HORNPIPE, PD = ST PATRICK DAY, TS = TRADTIONAL SET All entry fees are at the discretion of the Feis. Optional Competitions are marked with a (* ) and highlighted in blue. If you do choose to offer the optional competitions, they must be offered as outlined in the standardized syllabus. (i.e., if you choose to offer ceilis, you must offer ALL of the required age groups, subject to the usual rules and feis procedures for combining competitions. Each Feis may add additional competitions at their discretion. The standardized syllabus is intended to be a minimum guarantee of what competitors can expect. Any questions, concerns, feedback, etc – feel free to ask. FIRST FEIS The First Feis level has been established for dancers who are competing in their very First Feis. -
I Was in Sarah Clark's Irish Dance Camp: CAMP RINCE PROVENCE
This year I spent a very special summer holiday, the best I've ever experienced!!! I was in Sarah Clark's Irish Dance camp: CAMP RINCE PROVENCE Let me tell you, it was simply amazing! I spent 6 days doing what I love to do!! My feet were terrible in the end but I enjoyed every single minute of it!! We could learn from 4 of the world's best Irish dancers: Breandán de Gallaí - Sarah Clark Joanne Doyle - Stephen Scariff and that was really incredible!!! You had those people, that you normally see on stage, right in front of you and could learn from them!! I mean, I knew that we would have instructors, who had (among others) been with Michael's shows Riverdance or Lord of the Dance, but I wasn't really aware of what that would actually mean! We had some of the most incredible Irish dancers directly in front of your eyes!!! Never before I had so marvellous teachers! Everyone of us, doesn't matter which level or age, could learn so terribly much from these amazing instructors.... and they haven't only been brilliant teachers to us, but also very lovely people, you could have a lot of fun with!! The general organisation was also very well done! Don't ask me how Sarah managed all that, I can't imagine!! Everybody's arrival and departure was arranged to his/her best satisfaction, we had an amazing schedule of dancing classes where we could even choose between different bonus classes each day, dinner & lunch were very well organized as well as the evening program and the shuttle busses each time from the apartments to the dancing halls and back!! Moreover Sarah cared about everybody's additional wishes & problems, as big or small they might have been, and that was really remarkable!! Honestly, I was wondering sometimes if she had another twin sister somewhere helping her to get all this done!! :-) So, we spent an incredible week dancing all the time and meeting many like-minded people from all over Europe!! I remember Michael saying once about Feet of Flames having successfully performed in Belfast, Northern Ireland, in front of 80.000 people, that.. -

The History and Evolution of Clogging An Honors Thesis (HONRS 499) by Lindsay Schultz Thesis Advisor Ball State University Muncie, Indiana Presented: December 2009 Graduation: May 2010 · .::: 'I Abstract Dancing is a wonderful way for people to express themselves. There are so many styles of dance in our world today, and each ofthese dance styles had to evolve from something before it. That is how a new dance is born. Old styles of dance are changed or combined to form something new and different. In order for everyone to appreciate dance, it is important for them to be exposed to many styles of dance and learn how it evolved. This helps people understand why each dance style is special and unique. Clogging is one style of dance that is not as well known in the United States by most people in the general public. This thesis project is made to showcase this wonderful style of dance as well as educate the public about what clogging is and where it came from. I will present the findings from my research about the evolution of clogging, show a video of traditional Irish dancing (which greatly influenced clogging), as well as perform a modem clogging routine I choreographed myself. I want everyone to hear about the history as well as see what clogging looks like today in order to gain a greater appreciation for this special dance style. 2 Acknowledgments -I would like to thank Mr. Greg Lund for working with me as my advisor on this project. See the Curragower falls on the river and the boardwalk takes the path up to the Treaty Stone. The Treaty of Limerick was signed on this stone and is it remains a symbol for the city to this day. Across the bridge from the Treaty Stone you will see King John’s 12th century castle built by King John of England, it stands as a testament to 800 years of history.
