Honorary Membership. -At the October meeting of the Council, Geoffrey Keynes, author of the “Bibliog- raphy of William Blake,” lately published by the Grolier Club, was elected an Honorary Foreign Cor- responding member of the Club. A Bequest to the Club. -One of the chief interests of the late Hamilton B. Tompkins was the collection of prints suitable for extra-illustrating “Franklin in France” by Edward E. Hale and Edward E. Hale, Jr. 74 In his will he bequeathed the work, which he had en- larged to six volumes, to the Club, together with a sum of money for binding it suitably. The books have recently arrived and, as soon as they have been bound, will be on exhibition in the Library. They will be greatly valued, not only as an important possession, but as a token of the donor’s regard and thought for the Club. Mr. Tompkins had been a member since 1887. The House. Beyond a rearrangement of the Books in the Library and Print Room, the replacing of the descriptive labels for the Club’s collection of Bindings and the usual cleaning, there have been other im- provements during the summer. The walls and ceil- ings of the Club Room have been thoroughly cleaned and the ceilings of the Hall and Librarian’s room have been recalcimined. -

PART TWO PATRONS AND PRINTERS CHAPTER VI PATRONAGE The Significance of Dedications The Elizabethan period was a watershed in the history of literary patronage. The printing press had provided a means for easier publication, distribution and availability of books; and therefore a great patron, the public, was accessible to all authors who managed to get Into print. In previous times there were too many discourage- ments and hardships to be borne so that writing attracted only the dedicated and clearly talented writer. In addition, generous patrons were not at all plentiful and most authors had to be engaged in other occupations to make a living. In the last half of the sixteenth century, a far-reaching change is easily discernible. By that time there were more writers than there were patrons, and a noticeable change occurred In the relationship between patron and protge'. In- stead of a writer quietly producing a piece of literature for his patron's circle of friends, as he would have done in medieval times, he was now merely one of a crowd of unattached suitors clamouring for the favours and benefits of the rich. Only a fortunate few were able to find a patron generous enough to enable them to live by their pen. 1 Most had to work at other vocations and/or cultivate the patronage of the public and the publishers. •The fact that only a small number of persons had more than a few works dedicated to them indicates the difficulty in finding a beneficent patron. An examination of 568 dedications of religious works reveals that only ten &catees received more than ten dedications and only twelve received between four and nine. -

This article focuses on the woodcuts used in Holinshed’s Chronicles to illustrate the representation of warrior queens in England and surprisingly we find only two: Cordeilla and Boudica, from Britain’s prehistory and ancient history. It describes and analyses these images in order to demonstrate the historiographical and political objective of such works. This article also reviews the information known about the artist and tries to understand why these pictures were removed from the second edition of 1587. This article focuses on a series by Bernard Salomon. Salomon can be regarded as one of the most relevant engravers who, trough the editions done by Jean Tounes in Lyon, was to have a strong effect on the work of Li moges enamelleres in the sixteeen century. The study is carried out by looking at some pieces by Pierre Reymond now in the Thyssen Bomemisza collection. Sin duda es bien conocido el papel que el grabado jugó durante el Renacimiento en la transmisión de numerosas composiciones entre las distintas manifestaciones artísticas y, en par ticular, en el dominio de las artes suntuarias. En los primeros momentos los temas básicamente son religiosos; escenas del Nuevo Testamento, episodios de la vida de la Virgen o de los Santos, etc. y las fuentes de inspiración hay que buscarlas en grabados flamencos, alemanes o borgo- ñones. Poco a poco, al lado de temas sacros comienzan a cobrar cada vez más importancia los profanos, de forma que el artesano participará igualmente de las dos fuentes de modelos. En el ámbito francés, la libertad y la novedad de inspiración introducida desde Italia por los pintores de la Escuela de Fontainebleau pronto se convertira en punto de referencia obligado. -

How difficult it would be we had certainly no idea, or the book would never have been begun, and now that it is Imished I would bespeak the reader's sympathies, on Mr. Plomer 's behalf, that its inevitable shortcomings may be the more generously forgiven. If we look at what has already been written on the subject the diffi- culties will be more easily appreciated. In England, as in other countries, the period in the history of the press which is best known to us is, by the perversity of antiquaries, that which is furthest removed from our own time.
