Pleistocene reefs of the Egyptian Red Sea: environmental change and community persistence Lorraine R. Casazza School of Science and Engineering, Al Akhawayn University, Ifrane, Morocco ABSTRACT The fossil record of Red Sea fringing reefs provides an opportunity to study the history of coral-reef survival and recovery in the context of extreme environmental change. The Middle Pleistocene, the Late Pleistocene, and modern reefs represent three periods of reef growth separated by glacial low stands during which conditions became difficult for symbiotic reef fauna. Coral diversity and paleoenvironments of eight Middle and Late Pleistocene fossil terraces are described and characterized here. Pleistocene reef zones closely resemble reef zones of the modern Red Sea. All but one species identified from Middle and Late Pleistocene outcrops are also found on modern Red Sea reefs despite the possible extinction of most coral over two-thirds of the Red Sea basin during glacial low stands. Refugia in the Gulf of Aqaba and southern Red Sea may have allowed for the persistence of coral communities across glaciation events. Stability of coral communities across these extreme climate events indicates that even small populations of survivors can repopulate large areas given appropriate water conditions and time. JENKINS Abstract The unequal distribution of legal protections on endangered species has been attributed to the “charisma” and “cuteness” of protected species. However, the theory of kin selection, which predicts the genetic relationship between organisms is proportional to the amount of cooperation between them, offers an evolutionary explanation for this phenomenon. In this thesis, it was hypothesized if the unequal distribution of legal protections on endangered species is a result of kin selection, then the genetic similarity between a species and Homo sapiens is proportional to the legal protections on that species. -

The zoanthid genus Palythoa is found in shallow subtropical and tropical waters worldwide; yet many questions remain regarding the diversity of species and their evolution. Recent progress using molecular techniques has advanced species identifications but also raised new questions. In previous studies, it was hypothesized that P. sp. yoron may be the result of interspecific hybridization between the closely related species P. tuberculosa and P. mutuki. Here, in order to further assess the relationships among these 3 species, their sexual reproductive patterns, distribution, and morphology (tentacle number, colony shape and size, polyp shape, etc.) were investigated in 2008 at Odo Beach, Okinawa, Japan. Results show clear differences in morphology and distribution among all 3 species, with P. sp. yoron apparently intermediate between P. -

Sanganeb Atoll, Sudan A Marine National Park with Scientific Criteria for Ecologically Significant Marine Areas Abstract Sanganeb Marine National Park (SMNP) is one of the most unique reef structures in the Sudanese Red Sea whose steep slopes rise from a sea floor more than 800 m deep. It is located at approximately 30km north-east of Port Sudan city at 19° 42 N, 37° 26 E. The Atoll is characterized by steep slopes on all sides. The dominated coral reef ecosystem harbors significant populations of fauna and flora in a stable equilibrium with numerous endemic and endangered species. The reefs are distinctive of their high number of species, diverse number of habitats, and high endemism. The atoll has a diverse coral fauna with a total of 86 coral species being recorded. The total number of species of algae, polychaetes, fish, and Cnidaria has been confirmed as occurring at Sanganeb Atoll. Research activities are currently being conducted; yet several legislative decisions are needed at the national level in addition to monitoring. Sanganeb Marine National Park (SMNP) is one of the most unique reef structures in the Sudanese Red Sea whose steep slopes rise from a sea floor more than 800 m deep (Krupp, 1990). With the exception of the man-made structures built on the reef flat in the south, there is no dry land at SMNP (Figure 1). The Atoll is characterized by steep slopes on all sides with terraces in their upper parts and occasional spurs and pillars (Sheppard and Wells, 1988). -

Recent Changes in Scleractinian Coral Nomenclature and Classification
Recent changes in Scleractinian coral nomenclature and classification. (A practical guide for coral and reef ecologists) Michel Pichon Adjunct Professor, James Cook University Australia Honorary Associate, Museum of Tropical Queensland, Townsville The following document provides information on changes which were introduced recently in the classification and nomenclature of scleractinian corals. Such changes stem to a large extent from the research activity and the syntheses carried out by the members of the international “Scleractinian Systematics Working Group” (SSWG) over the last few years. They are the result of a multi-pronged approach combining the information provided by the implementation of relatively new techniques, which have only recently been applied to scleractinian coral taxonomy. Such new tools include, inter alia, morphometrics, microstructural analyses, anatomy of soft parts and molecular genetics. The changes thus made to the nomenclature and classification of scleractinian corals underlie a move towards a classification reflecting more and more the phylogeny of various taxa, and as a result may place side by side morphologically very dissimilar species. Furthermore, such a move will require a re-definition of numerous genera (and of some families, which from a practical viewpoint is less critical) in accordance with the rules set out in the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature. Such a work is still to be done and a number of genera remain to this day without an adequate revised diagnostic morphological characterization. Several important studies are still in progress and one may expect additional changes in the near future. The present document, therefore, does not pretend to represent a complete revision of scleractinian coral taxonomy. -
