P2 [email protected] 01 February 2019 www.dgc.co.za Meet our Staff Chantal Langley HOD Student Affairs & Grade 2 Teacher, Junior Primary From a young age I knew that teaching was the profession that I wanted to pursue. After matriculating I followed my passion by enrolling at Edgewood College of Education. I graduated with my HDE and started teaching. Wanting to learn more about assisting children with barriers to learning, I went back to Edgewood to do a Diploma in Specialised Education and then completed a BEd Honours Degree: Educational Psychology. During this time I married, had two sons and continued teaching. In 2010 I was thrilled to be employed at Durban Girls’ College as a Grade 2 teacher. I have enjoyed every day teaching in this wonderful school and was given the honour of being appointed HOD of Student Affairs in the Junior Primary last year. This position allows me to engage with all the girls in our phase and to monitor and track their progress. What a privilege to play a role in their educational journey! Aside from teaching, my other passions are walking and travelling. Two years ago I got to do both by walking a part of the Camino de Santiago, I carried an icon as a remembrance of a special DGC girl so my school was close to my heart every step of the way! Tribute to a College Friend Joyce Wrinch-Schulz We were sad to hear about the passing of Joyce Wrinch-Schulz (91), on 26 January. Joyce was a journalist and the Women's Editor of The Daily News for twelve years. She has written several books, including The Happy Ship, a History of Durban Girls' College. Joyce's sister (Isabel Lawson nee Clarke), her daughter (Rosaland Hansen nee Chilvers) and four nieces are all Old Girls. Corrie King, who taught at DGC for many years, is one of Joyce's nieces. Our deepest condolences to Joyce's family. From our Chaplain Michelle Edgcumbe The heavens proclaim the glory of God. The skies display his craftsmanship. Day after day they continue to speak; night after night they make him known. Psalm 19:1,2 This term in R.E the Grade 1 - 6 classes will be learning some interesting facts about the amazing world we live in. From volcanoes to honey bees to the way our skin protects our bodies, we’ll be examining some of the most incredible discoveries people have made about the natural world. Learning about these things is fun and educational, but they also speak to us about a creative, powerful God who is glorified by the world around us everyday. Sometimes, it’s good to look out the window and ‘hear’ how each part of creation bears testimony to the goodness and greatness of its Maker. It’s good for us to join in. Amazing world! Amazing God!
