MESSAGE FROM KZNCU PRESIDENT

Ben Dladla

This year's AGM coincides with the epidemic Covid 19. This has unfortunately affected our beloved sport of . It has led to most of our staff working from home. While we appreciate the fact that they are at home, we stress the fact that they together with everyone else must adhere to Covid 19 regulations.

Apart from the Covid 19 this has been a very bad year for our cricket family. We have had too many deaths. May the Lord comfort the families of the departed souls.

We need to not only embrace the spirit of BLM, but we must be the voice that reverberate at all cricket events in this regard. Our son of the soil, led the way everyone must join in.

It is pleasing to see the number of cricket hubs increase in our province. This is our commitment to grow the game of cricket in the whole province. It will also help us to increase the number of Township clubs. To help facilitate this, our coaching instructor must please focus more on the development of black coaches. That is part of transformation.

PAGE | 4 2020 AGM

Unfortunately little has happened in the schools cricket due to Covid 19. We hope and trust that when the situation gets better our educators and coaches will resume with the intention to cover up the lost time. We also call on everybody involved to assist in increasing the number of Township schools playing the game. It is still my call that we need to reduce playing costs.

I am still calling for the involvement and the inclusion of women into this beautiful game. This should not be seen as a favor to our women folk, it is our responsibility. We must increase the number of women administrators and strengthen our women and girls teams. In the same vein we must also involve our differently abled community. We have Transformation targets to achieve. I implore district to come up with strategies to develop and promote women involvement.

Congratulations to the districts for adhering to the correct Geo-political demarcations.

The professional and provincial sides have shown some improvements this past season. The Hollywoodbets Dolphins are the champions, while our Coastal provincial team are also the champions in their 3-Day division. Congratulations to the Management and coaching staff for the work well done. Our trophy cabinet is slowly filling up. We expect our teams to keep the momentum going, no pun intended.

We are still addressing the issue of our extra seat in the CSA member's Council. We hope this is about to be resolved.

We have set up two relief initiatives to combat hunger and provide relief to some of our cricket compatriots. There is a relief fund to assist with specific needs in our cricket family and the “Bowl out hunger” initiative which aims to feed our hubs.

In conclusion, I would like to thank all our sponsors and partners, without them we would not be where we are today. I would also like to thank and congratulate the CEO and his staff for their contribution to our success. I would also like to thank the council, Manco and office bearers and directors for the support.

Let us all be safe during this difficult time.

Unity is our strength and diversity is our power.

President KZN Cricket Union

MESSAGE FROM

KZNCU CEO

Heinrich Strydom

Introduction It is with great pride that I reflect on the financial year ended on 30 April 2020. As the KZN cricket fraternity we can all look back fondly at one of our most successful years in recent times. Our combined mission over the last three years has been to return the KZN Cricket Union to the top of the Affiliate list, the Dolphins to the top of the Franchise list and Kingsmead to the top of the stadium list. My logic has always told me, to become the best we need to be ranked and viewed as part of the top three nationally in as many sectors of our business as possible. A holistic approach to ensure that every aspect of our business is well managed and optimally implemented.

Background We are the custodians of cricket in the KZN Province and have over many years duly implemented cricket structures in all 11 districts. We operate the franchise activities in the professional entity, KZN Cricket (Pty) Ltd, and the amateur and stadium activities in the Non- profit organization, KZN Cricket Union. The KZN Cricket Union is broadly broken down into the following departments: Core business

PAGE | 6 2020 AGM

- Stadium & Facilities management (Hollywoodbets Kingsmead, Pietermaritzburg Oval) - KZN Coastal Cricket Services (eThekwini, Ugu, Ilembe, King Cetshwayo, Umkhanyakude)* - KZN Inland Cricket Services (Umgungundlovu, Harry Gwala, Amajuba, Zululand, Umzinyathi, Uthukela)*

*Cricket Services cover all amateur cricket aspects including KFC Mini-cricket, RPC/Hubs Development, Youth cricket (schools-boys & girls), Senior cricket (clubs, academy, rural, women provincial, semi-professional), Cricket support services (umpires, scorers, coaches, data capturing)

Support services - Finance & Human Resources - Marketing & Communications - Governance - Transformation - IT

Results Our key performance indicators remain feedback from our valuable stakeholders throughout the cricket service framework, our partners, fans, players and officials, a breakeven or better financial result, unqualified audit report, a healthy pipeline, the CSA EPG & Transformation scorecard, the CSA Operational and Incentive scorecard, the winning of trophies, the production of Protea players, world class facilities and a steady flow of quality coaches, umpires, scorers, ground staff and administrators.

As part of this reflection of the 12-month period we will proudly share our performances against these indicators, as well as highlight some challenges experienced.

A short summary of our core business results include producing 11 Proteas for the National Men and Women teams, the Momentum One-day Cup Champions, CSA 3-Day Challenge Champions, Africa T20 Finalists, top three finish for the Rural team, top four finish for the Women’s team, successful hosting of a sold out match against England, successful launch of Operation Kingsmead, the commitment from Hollywoodbets as the new stadium sponsor until at least 2024, a successful revamped Sunfoil/DSR RPC/Hubs development tournament, an intriguing DPL tournament and various partners confirming their continued support. A short summary of our results from a support services perspective reflect a very successful financial year, an unqualified audit report, adherence to all compliance and statutory requirements, first place in the CSA EPG & Transformation scorecard, overall improvement on the CSA Operational Scorecard to 83%, which included 100% for Governance, 97% for Finance and admin, 89% for Youth cricket and 85% for RPC/Hubs, as well as constantly improving the work environment for our +-200 staff compliment.

I would like to make special mention of our phenomenal partners who have committed to walk this journey with us. HOLLYWOODBETS DOLPHINS

The team had a tough start to the 2019 part of the season but entered 2020 with a hunger to play positive, winning cricket. Under the guidance of the relatively new coaching team of , Quinton Friend and Mduduzi Mbatha and captaincy of Keshav Maharaj (Momentum Cup) and Marques Ackerman (four-day) the team excelled in both formats, with the cherry on the top undoubtedly being crowned the Momentum Cup Champions.

4-Day Franchise Series (5th)

The team had a very poor start to the four-day campaign but managed to fight back in the last three matches with two good wins. The team was scheduled to play five matches in the second part of the season, but only played three before COVID-19 put a premature end to the season.

Nonetheless the team used those three matches to show off the potential of this new combination of players and staff. We beat the Cobras in Oudtshoorn, managed to win in Pietermaritzburg for the first time since 2007, and ended off with a draw after coming agonisingly short of winning before play was called on the final day against the .

Prenelan Subrayen ended up as the competition’s overall highest wickettaker with 38 scalps and Marques Ackerman as the overall third highest run scorer with 660 runs in the eight matches.

U19 Girls Trials were held in May which was sub zonal and included South Coast, North Coast and Central comprising of High Schools, Townships and Clubs. A high-performance squad of 24 girls were selected and trained till final selections in September of 13 girls. The CSA Girls U19 week was held in Nelspruit In December.

A lot of work has been done by the KZCNU and CSA to raise the profile of women cricketers but it still remains a challenge to develop cricketers at “grass roots” level and to ensure the continued long-term growth of clubs and player numbers.

Sunfoil/DSR RPC/Hub Development Tournament

HUBS/RPC Programme The KZN Cricket Union in conjunction with CSA, KZN Department of Sport and Recreation and Sunfoil continue to play a critical role in shaping the country’s future cricket stars through its highly successful development program.

The main objectives of the project: - To sustain the game by providing adequate cricketing facilities in disadvantaged areas, townships and rural areas of KZN. - To help coordinate and further develop cricket in all corners of KZN. - To supplement and strengthen the structure within the municipality by providing the infra structure and kit to sustain cricket and create a love for the game. - To provide job stability and more opportunity for dedicated coaches.

In the Union’s quest to remain relevant and innovative, it expanded the annual development tournament into two events. These two events were hosted at in KwaZulu-Natal Midlands. The first tournament featured seven teams representing the 15 KZN Hub teams and an additional team representing the players that attend mainstreams schools on bursaries. The second tournament, known as the Elite tournament, included teams from all over the country including Western Province, Easterns, Border, Eastern Province and Gauteng. The u15 and u19 teams representing KZN in the second tournament were selected from the first tournament.

This tournament also saw the introduction of time cricket to both the u15 and u19 teams in addition to the 50 over and T20 formats that were enjoyed by all. The u15 division was won by KZN u15 and the u19 division was won by Easterns u19.

This tournament has set a solid platform for the next generation of cricketers and promises to make cricket accessible and attractive to more.

Immense gratitude is extended to all partners involved in making this tournament a success from KZN Department of Sport and Recreation, the Willowton Group, the Sport Development Trust, , Kookaburra, Michaelhouse, eThekwini Municipality and the Institute of Learning and Motivation South Africa and Sedgars Sports along with all the umpires, scorers and officials involved.

Youth Cricket

The KZN schools league structure is strong and the administrators are constantly striving to find strategies to expand the base of cricket schools playing in these leagues. CSA’s Blue chip /Focus School project continues to make a positive impact.

CRICKET SERVICES – INLAND Semi-Professional The Hollywoodbets KZN Inland Semi Professional team had a very disappointing season in both the main formats. The team finished 5th in Pool A in the 3-day Competion and also 5th in the One day competition.

The team enjoyed an excellent CSA Provincial T20 competition reaching the final against Easterns. It was a disappointing loss, but still an outstanding team performance. Robbie Frylinck, Grant Roelofson, Cody Chetty and Kerwin Mungroo showcased exactly why they have been able to perform at the highest level by putting in some dominant performances during the tournament.

During the past season the following players from the Rural, Academy and Schools pipeline made their debuts. 1. Caleb Pillay 2. Mondli Khumalo 3. Mpho Ndumo 4. Andile Simelane () 5. Slade van Staden (Hilton College). Women Provincial and Girls Cricket

PAGE | 32 2020 AGM

The Women’s Provincial team continued to struggle. All matches were completed but the team only managed one win. Nicole de Klerk and Pretty Molefe was produced for the Hollywoodbets KZN Coastal team who competed in the Top 6 tournament.

From a development perspective, KZN Inland affiliated a team in the KZNCU league in Durban but the performance of this team has not met expectations due to unavailability of players to travel to Durban. It was hoped that players in the women’s provincial team and U19 teams would take advantage of this opportunity to play more matches but sadly this has not materialised, and this initiative would have to be reviewed.

However, every effort is being made to grow the game in the Inland region through club and schools’ cricket.

Club Cricket The season commenced with the T20 competition - MCC beat Zingari in the regional final. - The franchise final was hosted at the PMB Oval where Clares beat MCC to represent the Dolphins franchise at the national club championships. The 50 Over competition was nearly completed but then COVID19 had the final say. - Standard was crowned as champions of the Premier League - Umzinyathi from Dundee won the Promotion League

CSA Operational & Incentive Scorecard CSA implemented the CSA Operational Scorecard in 2014/15 with the aim of measuring all activities conducted throughout the South African cricket landscape. CSA also added an incentive part to the scorecard which is used to incentivize members.

The 2019/20 standings have not been released yet, but we are hopeful of finishing in the prize money. We have received our KZNCU results which combine Coastal and Inland. Our total operational score is 82,46% and our incentive score is 83,18.

CSA Operational & Incentive Scorecard

EPG & Transformation Scorecard CSA also introduced an EPG and Transformation scorecard as a prerequisite to qualify for the incentive part. I am proud to announce that we ended top of the list with a total score of 68.5%.

KZN Cricket have become a leader nationally from a governance perspective and the union has continued to strive to improve in all areas. The scores on the transformation scorecard suggest that the union continues to set the tone nationally.

The scorecard is broken down into seven different sections from governance to finance to quality of opportunity for players. KZN Coastal and KZN Inland scored highly in close to 80% of the categories which set them apart from the rest of the affiliates.

I am especially proud of the fact that our Momentum Cup winning team, the Hollywoodbets Dolphins, is one of the most diverse teams in the world.

Stadium Management

Hollywoodbets Kingsmead We are proud to have confirmed Hollywoodbets as our Stadium Naming Rights partners until at least 2024.

This announcement gave us the momentum to continue with Operation Kingsmead. We managed to implement a myriad of changes in recent months which presented spectators, players, officials and staff with a rejuvenated stadium experience.

The newly renovated Hollywoodbets Food Court behind the North Eastern edge of the stands borders the player’s warm-up areas and now the fans will have the chance to watch their heroes as they go through their warm-ups in the nets while enjoying a bite to eat and a drink.

There has also been a complete overhaul to the facilities behind Castle Corner with ease of access for spectators to food stalls and drinks vendors of paramount importance.

Fourways Airconditioning has sponsored a world class players chill area which provides the team with the perfect environment to enjoy a quiet lunch, do a teambuilding session or simply to relax.

PAGE | 37 2020 AGM

SAB sponsored the Walk of Fame which is a celebration of all the records at Kingsmead since Unity. SAB also invested in the Castle deck which is probably one of the country’s best viewing areas.

The stadium team has worked incredibly hard to ensure an upliftment in the playing and practice facilities, as well as our general service .

Pietermaritzburg Oval The friendly and efficient staff based in Pietermaritzburg continued to successfully host matches and events. The pitch once again received excellent ratings for all matches.

KZN Inland successfully hosted the Proteas Women against Pakistan in two T20 matches and also hosted five Youth ODI matches between SA U19 and Pakistan U19. The Hollywoodbets Dolphins played two home Momentum Cup matches at the PMB Oval against the Cobras and Warriors respectively. Both matches were well attended with crowds exceeding 2000.

Looking ahead It is a common question asked at most job interviews: “Where do you see yourself or the business in 5 to 10 years from now?”

None of us would have answered in 2010 or 2015 that in 2020 we would be in the middle of a pandemic, still at home after more than 100 days of lockdown. Probably frustrated, uncertain about what the next day would bring and certainly concerned about the impact that the macro political and economic environment will have on each of us going forward.

No amateur cricket activities until further notice, no DPL, no Sunfoil/DSR RPC/Hubs development tournament, no national school weeks, no club cricket, virtual meetings, a virtual AGM and ultimately working from home.

The current situation has also forced all of us to question our relevance, not only in the bigger scheme of things, but also in our personal environments.

My advice, in the words of Paulo Coelho, would be “to not let all the world’s tragedies into your heart. You will drown. But the ones you do let in should count. Let them manifest action.”

My advice from a cricketing background would simply be to “control the “controllables””. Control what is in your grasp and make that a relentless pursuit of excellence.

Live full out. Be brilliant at your work. Look after your health. Take positive risks to grow into your greatness. Love like there is no tomorrow. Respect all people. And enjoy every moment.
