This exhibition is a personal view of the General Manager who is coming to the end of his second term. The idea is to outline what could be the story of Belgian art during the 20th century and to highlight the critical role of what took place on the Belgian art scene since the late 19th century.

“ … Without leaving the Belgian identity framework, I wanted to test the natural anti-modernity of Belgian art: its relation to the progress that Magritte would say is a ‘crazy idea’, its resilience through irony, its sense of baroque vituperation from Ensor to Cobra; its relationship to the lost paradise and classical tradition; its rejection of collectivist dogma and its libertarian foundation; its atypical conception of the Sublime; its pessimism along with its joy of living. Through its presen- tation, the exhibition aims to be an essay without words, the text being made of works held in the collective memory that makes up the museum. A dialogue between , and drawings that outline a cultural identity and question the sense of modernity experienced as project. Such a project is now sorely lacking in our Western demo- cracies. This exhibition invites you to a ‘free’ and therefore questionable display that brings out of the shadow some less known, less viewed works which take strength and subs- tance in contact with the masterpieces of our collections. ” –

8 29.09 > 22.01 2017 14-18. Rupture or Continuity? Belgian Art at the time of World War I

At the dawn of the 20th century, the Belgian art scene is buzzing. World War I, the occupation, the horror of the battle- fields, and the exile of more than a million Belgian people have a significant impact on the country’s artistic production. Nobody remains unaffected by the traumatic experiences of this war, which will consolidate the style of some and consti- tute a revolution for others. The exhibition “14 -18. Rupture or Continuity” delves into the vast collection of the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium and explores the changes and constants of Belgian Art between 1910 and 1925. Artists and artistic movements like Constant Permeke’s Expressionism, Jules Schmalzigaug’s Futurism or Jozef Peeters’ Pure Plastic are shown side by side in this exceptional exhibition, immersing the visitor in an era of artistic and political upheaval. ‘Digital experience’, the new multimedia cylinder provides an interactive context for the artworks on display. Through historical documents, videos, audio clips and reproductions of works, this innovative device offers an overview of Belgian artistic creation in the days of World War I. On 24 and 25 November 2016, the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium organize an international scientific conference devoted to the place of Belgian modern art in a European context. 11 Pieter Bruegel. Pieter Bruegel in Bruegel Box. 12 Projection after Pieter Bruegel, detail. 16.03.2016 > 16.03.2020 Bruegel. Unseen Masterpieces When art meets technology

Bruegel. Unseen Masterpieces reveals to the public the hidden secrets of the works of († Brussels, 1569). While the artist and his paintings are instantly recognisable worldwide, every composition also depicts a whole host of characters - some surprising, others familiar – and vignettes that provide the subtext of the story, which are masterpieces worthy of exploration in their own rights. The Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium launched this project jointly with the Google Cultural Institute in anticipa- tion of the 450th anniversary of Bruegel’s death, in 2019. The project brings together major international museums, many of which are European, around the focal figure of Bruegel the Elder. This innovative concept is the fruit of in-depth thinking on current transformations in the field of museology as it adapts to the digital age. Virtual exhibits Bruegel. Unseen Masterpieces can be accessed on the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium’s interactive screens, on their mobile app and on the Google Cultural Institute platform. Great news: the Bruegel room has now been equipped with top quality lighting!

13 New displays in our Museums

From October, the Bernheim room will present works by Thierry De Cordier, a Belgian artist born in Oudenaarde in 1954 and living in Oostende. You will be able to appreciate 13 iconotextures or “drawings” presenting a rolling text which consists in a gigan- tic index of the definitions of God. Through this approach, De Cordier pursues his quest where sacred things and irony are combined. To these famous texts of humanity, the artist adds his own prospective where popular wisdom – through maxims – is being twisted.

The dynamic muséefin-de-sièclemuseum regularly presents new artworks thanks to its partners. About a hundred fragile or on temporary loan works are currently on show, until the end of December only. This is a great opportunity to admire some rarely exhibited works by Rops, Spilliaert, Meunier, Laermans... Belgian artists Henri de Groux and Georges Lemmen in particular are put in the spotlight. The muséeoldmastersmuseum also enjoys a rotation of works (rooms 54 and 63). A magnificent series of paintings is now on show, as well as rarely exhibited works from the 16th and 17th centuries. The sublime diptych “Adam” and “Eve” by Lucas Cranach has just been restored. After 3 years of meticulous work, the two paintings on wood have regained their sparkling lustre and original colours. A must-see in the muséeoldmastersmuseum (room 69).

Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium, Brussels / 16 photo : J. Geleyns / Ro scan The Museums are celebrating their 215th anniversary!

In 1801, First Consul Bonaparte founded through the so-called Chaptal Decree the Museum of Fine Arts in Brussels, ordering the to send paintings to Brussels. The museum opened in 1803 and Brussels became its owner in 1811. The museum was open to the public on Thursdays and Saturdays, and artists were allowed to work there on other days. The first curator of our museums, Guillaume Bosschaert, fought a long time to get more important paintings for the museum in Brussels. He did not hesitate to justify his claims by economic arguments which are still relevant especially in 2016! The government will deign to consider that Brussels, not having as the expectation of a flourishing trade, it is essential for it to pay particular attention to the support of Sciences and Arts; one and the other will lend hand to a new industry, to useful factories thanks to which our city will recover one day from the losses brought upon by the recent events.” […] “...the demands a museum as a secondary mean to alleviate the losses that continue to weigh on it... The govern- ment by accessing our request, deign to think that the charm of the arts is the most powerful attraction that can be offered to the curiosity and education of foreigners.” — Guillaume Bosschaert in “Note on the museum of the Ecole Centrale”, 1800. Read the fascinating history of our museums in “Les Musées royaux des Beaux-Arts de Belgique. Deux siècles d’histoire” which is on sale in the Museum shop.

THE FRIENDS SUPPORT THE MUSEUMS

26 Thanks to you, dear Friends…

In 2016, thanks to donations from the Friends, we were able to edit and print the‘Magritte Quotes’ in the collection ‘Museum in a nutshell’. The booklet is on sale for € 4 and is free for our Full Members and Patrons.

With the support of the National Lottery, we edited and printed a Notebook with the illustrations of 22 masterpieces from our museums. It is on sale at the INFO desk and in the Museum shop for € 5. Use this notebook to let go, write, draw, and dream…

From September 2016, we repeat the successful ‘100 free tours’ programme for primary and secondary education schools, but this year no less than 101classes will benefit from this opportunity! Thank you to our sponsor and to the Friends who offered their contribution for the evening of 22 March 2016 cancelled because of the tragic attack. Pupils will discover Belgian art before and after World War I.

Since May 2016, Digital Experience, our brand new multimedia device is operational in the Patio 0. While the new system of movable wall panels offers a flexible and adequate space to display modern and contemporary art, the multimedia device places our institution at the forefront of

27 museums that are giving consideration to digital museology. The use of digital is in no way incompa- tible with the contemplation of artworks. It com- plements the visit and creates an immersive and inviting space in the centre of the room. The cylinder also makes it now possible to view the museums’ great works of video art, which are usually difficult to present. It is thanks to the support of Treetop Asset Management, the National Lottery and the Friends of the Museums that this project did succeed.

A huge thank you to all our volunteers who perform, in sometimes difficult conditions, a fantastic job in our museums and in our back-office!

Dear friends, we kindly appeal to your generosity for financing the restoration of our Paul Gaugin Masterpiece ‘Suzanne Bambridge’. From 5 September a crowdfunding will be launched via the Ginko platform.

A HUGE THANK YOU TO ALL!
