Lyropupa cookei Clench, 1952, is shown to be a synonym of Lyropupa anceyana Cooke & Pilsbry in Pilsbry & Cooke, 1920. The sole Hawaiian record for the North American Strobilops aeneus Pilsbry, 1926, is almost certainly based on a mislabeled specimen, and accordingly this species should be removed from the Hawaiian faunal list. Lyropupa cookei Clench , 1952 Lyropupa Pilsbry, 1900, is a genus of pupilloid land snails endemic to the Hawaiian islands. in their monograph of the genus, Pilsbry & Cooke (1920 in 1918–1920: 253–254, pl. 26, figs. 3, 6) published a description of “ Lyropupa anceyana C. & P., n. sp.,” based on specimens from ola‘a on the island of Hawai‘i held in the collections of Bishop Museum and the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia. They stated that their new species had previously been misidentified by Ancey (1904:124) as Lyropupa lyrata (Gould, 1843) . Several pages earlier, in their systematic treatment of that species, Pilsbry & Cooke (1918–1920: 235) had also set forth their conclusion that Ancey had misidenti - fied Gould’s species and stated that in fact Ancey’s “description of lyrata was based on specimens of an unnamed species for which the name L. -

Unfortunately, much of the Hawaiian land snail fauna has been lost, with overall extinction rates as high as ~70% (Hayes et al ., unpubl. data). However, the recent rediscovery of an extinct species provides hope that all is not lost, yet continued habitat destruction, impacts of invasive species, and climate change, necessi - tate the immediate development and deployment of effective conservation strategies to save this biodiversity treasure before it vanishes entirely (Solem 1990, Rég nier et al . 2009). Achatinellidae Auriculella pulchra Pease 1868 Notable rediscovery Auriculella pulchra (Fig. 1) belongs in the Auriculellinae, a Hawaiian endemic land snail subfamily of the Achatinellidae with 32 species (Cowie et al . 1995). It was originally described from the island of O‘ahu in 1868 and was subsequently recorded throughout the Ko‘olau Mountain range. -

E-mail: [email protected] OTES N Abstract: The geographic distribution of Strobilops aeneus Pilsbry, 1926, a rare species in Canada, is reviewed and all known records are mapped. Two recent records, the only ones since 1941, are reported from the province of Ontario. One of these records represents a small range extension ca S. aeneus from Ontario, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia were re-examined and found to be another species. 85 km north of the closest previous site. Abstract: Brazil is a megadiverse country for many (if not most) animal taxa, harboring a signifi- cant portion of Earth’s biodiversity. Still, the Brazilian land snail fauna is not that diverse at first sight, comprising around 700 native species. Most of these species were described by European and North American naturalists based on material obtained during 19th-century expeditions. Ear- ly 20th century malacologists, like Philadelphia-based Henry A. Pilsbry (1862–1957), also made remarkable contributions to the study of land snails in the country. From that point onwards, however, there was relatively little interest in Brazilian land snails until very recently. The last de- cade sparked a renewed enthusiasm in this branch of malacology, and over 50 new Brazilian spe- cies were revealed. An astounding portion of the known species (circa 45%) presently belongs to the superfamily Orthalicoidea, a group of mostly tree snails with typically large and colorful shells. It has thus been argued that the missing majority would be comprised of inconspicuous microgastropods that live in the undergrowth. In fact, several of the species discovered in the last decade belong to these “low-profile” groups and many come from scarcely studied regions or environments, such as caverns and islands. -

Pearce Carnegie Museum of Natural History 4400 Forbes Avenue Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania 15213-4080 ABSTRACT The land snails and slugs (Gastropoda: Caenogastropoda and Pulmonata) of two national parks along the Potomac River in Washington DC, Maryland, and Virginia were surveyed in 2010 and 2011. A total of 64 species was documented accounting for 60 new county or District records. Paralaoma servilis (Shuttleworth) and Zonitoides nitidus (Müller) are recorded for the first time from Virginia and Euconulus polygyratus (Pilsbry) is confirmed from the state. Previously unreported growth forms of Punctum smithi Morrison and Stenotrema barbatum (Clapp) are described. O. zilchi was classified within the monotypic subgenus Orcula (Hausdorfia) subgen. n.; O. jetschini, O. wagneri and O. schmidtii were classified to Orcula (Illyriobanatica) subgen. n. (type species: Pupa Schmidtii), whereas the other Orcula species remain in the nominotypical subgenus. -
