Luigi Pirandello, Il fu Mattia Pascal Giorgio Bassani’s much-cited piece entitled Il giardino tradito – a firm prise de position against Vittorio De Sica’s adaptation of Il giardino dei Finzi Contini – has often obfuscated Bassani’s other reflections on the practice of cinematic adaptation. Bassani was neither dismissive of cin- ema as an art form nor fundamentally opposed to the transposition of novels into films. In fact, he displayed a keen and sustained interest in film, and collaborated in various ways with directors such as Mario Sol- dati, Michelangelo Antonioni, Alessandro Blasetti, Luigi Zampa, and Luchino Visconti 2. Author and co-author of «a dozen» of screenplays (some with Pier Paolo Pasolini), Bassani also wrote essays on film and film reviews 3. italian culture, Vol. xxxii No. 2, September 2014, 138–60 Book Reviews Fictions of Appetite: Alimentary Discourses in Italian Modernist Literature. By Enrico Cesaretti. Pp. vii + 272. Oxford: Peter Lang. 2013. Aside from a few, notable examples, such as Gian-Paolo Biasin’s I sapori della modernità (1991), gastro-criticism is a fairly new multi-disciplinary approach to literature that incorpo- rates literary studies, anthropology, sociology, semiotics and history to explore cultural production. Enrico Cesaretti’s gastro-critical approach to Italian Modernism brings together articles previously published; but here they are revised in order to read early twentieth century Italian writers and texts from a new perspective. The four chapters explore both well-known and nearly forgotten texts by authors such as F. T. Marinetti, Aldo Palazzeschi, Paola Masino, Massimo Bontempelli, and Luigi Pirandello through the common thematic of food, eating, depravation and hunger. Cesaretti notes that “virtually every major twentieth-century Western intellectual from Freud onward, has refl ected on the multiple cultural roles and implications of food and eating” (3). Modernism brought renewed focus on the body, so the trope of food, or lack thereof, becomes an important semiotic concern for writers of the period. Cesaretti’s selection of authors and texts stems from a chronological closeness more so than a great stylistic affi nity, and he is conscious of trying to unite his authors under the umbrella of the term Modernism, which, as he notes, has been problematic in Italian literary critical circles. For Cesaretti, these fi ve authors all emphasize food, hunger, and related tropes in their works because of historical reality (food shortages in Italy during the interwar years among others) and because of Modernism’s emphasis on the body and its functions. -
Birth and Death of the Housewife
Introduction — 1 Introduction “Defeatist and cynical” were the words Fascist censors used to defi ne Paola Masino’s boldest and most controversial novel, Birth and Death of the Housewife (Nascita e morte della massaia), fi rst published in installments between 1941 and 1942, and then as a single volume by Bompiani in 1945. Indeed, such indignant reaction comes as no surprise, given that the book attacks those very same institutions—marriage and motherhood—that Fascism sought to idealize and promote for the sake of the homeland. Already at the outset of the novel, the nameless female protagonist strikes the reader as being quite the opposite of a submissive homemaker concerned exclusively with the well-being of her household and family. Emerging, like a character out of Samuel Beckett’s plays, from a trunk “that served as her wardrobe, bed, dresser, table, and bedroom, a trunk full of blanket rags, bits of bread, books, and funeral remains” (BDH 17), she displays—already at a very young age—a stubbornly desperate need to feed her mind and unleash her imagination, even at the expense of a body that carries “deadlines, rules, and the need to take precautions” (BDH 90). When she agrees, for her mother’s sake, to step out of the trunk and comply with the role society has assigned to her, she gives up her potential as a human being, turns off her intellect, and prepares for a lifelong performance as a female marionette. Her marriage to an ordinary, socially “proper” older man (whose pompous speeches on the function of women as the guardian angels of the hearth echo those of the regime) marks her further metamorphosis into a Housewife, forever tied to the four walls of an abode that neither shelters nor represents her, but that still lays claim to all of her energy, stifl ing her creativity. -

Ha partecipato alla sceneggiatura del kolossal hollywoodiano Guerra e Pace (1956). Muore a Tellaro il 19 giugno 1999 . We just celebrated the Sheri La Macchia & graduation of 21 seniors, out of 46 majors, during Carmela Scala a joyful evening attended by 74 people. Three 4 UNDERGRADUATE NEWS ABOVE: Paola Gambarota among our seniors completed an honors thesis. & ITALIAN NIGHT We were very impressed when students attending Prof. Rhiannon Welch’s senior 6 LECTURES & IGS seminar organized a two-day conference on the topic of “New and Old Italian 8 RUTGERS DAY Identities,” demonstrating a strong commitment to explore timely issues of 10 GRADUATE NEWS citizenship and immigration. One of these students, Nicoletta Romano, continued to study these questions with the support of the Lloyd Gardner Fellowship Program 12 ALUMNI REUNION & NEWS in Leadership and Social Policy, under the guidance of Professor Welch. Another 16 FACULTY NEWS Italian major, Mihaela Sanderson, was selected as the author of the “Best Poster” for back cover the Humanities portion of the Aresty Symposium, the result of a research project DEPARTMENT INITIATIVES developed with the support of her mentor Prof. Andrea Baldi. This is the second consecutive time that a student majoring in Italian is recognized in this way. There have been some changes in our department, and we miss our former friends and colleagues, our beloved Carol Feinberg, our kindhearted Robin Rogers, and our former language coordinator Daniele de Feo. -

L’ADESIONE di SANREMO E TORINO, che condividono il progetto, vuole essere un ulteriore OMAGGIO, in quanto citt`achiave per la sua formazione e maturit`a,di pensiero e scrittura. Il Castellet 'Italiano' La Porta Per La Nuova Letteratura Latinoamericana
Rassegna iberistica ISSN 2037-6588 Vol. 38 – Num. 104 – Dicembre 2015 Il Castellet ‘italiano’ La porta per la nuova letteratura latinoamericana Francesco Luti (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, España) Abstract This paper seeks to recall the ‘Italian route’ of the critic Josep Maria Castellet in the last century, a key figure in Spanish and Catalan literature. The Italian publishing and literary worlds served as a point of reference for Castellet, and also for his closest literary companions (José Agustín Goytisolo and Carlos Barral). All of these individuals formed part of the so-called Barcelona School. Over the course of at least two decades, these men managed to build and maintain a bridge to the main Italian publishing houses, thereby opening up new opportunities for Spanish literature during the Franco era. Thanks to these links, new Spanish names gained visibility even in the catalogues of Italian publishing houses. Looking at the period from the mid- 1950s to the end of the 1960s, the article focuses on the Italian contacts of Castellet as well as his publications in Italy. The study concludes with a comment on his Latin American connections, showing how this literary ‘bridge’ between Barcelona and Italy also contributed to exposing an Italian audience to the Latin American literary boom.
