Honour Killing in Sindh Men's and Women's Divergent Accounts Shahnaz Begum Laghari PhD University of York Women’s Studies March 2016 Abstract The aim of this project is to investigate the phenomenon of honour-related violence, the most extreme form of which is honour killing. The research was conducted in Sindh (one of the four provinces of Pakistan). The main research question is, ‘Are these killings for honour?’ This study was inspired by a need to investigate whether the practice of honour killing in Sindh is still guided by the norm of honour or whether other elements have come to the fore. It is comprised of the experiences of those involved in honour killings through informal, semi- structured, open-ended, in-depth interviews, conducted under the framework of the qualitative method. The aim of my thesis is to apply a feminist perspective in interpreting the data to explore the tradition of honour killing and to let the versions of the affected people be heard. In my research, the women who are accused as karis, having very little redress, are uncertain about their lives; they speak and reveal the motives behind the allegations and killings in the name of honour. The male killers, whom I met inside and outside the jails, justify their act of killing in the name of honour, culture, tradition and religion. Drawing upon interviews with thirteen women and thirteen men, I explore and interpret the data to reveal their childhood, educational, financial and social conditions and the impacts of these on their lives, thoughts and actions. -

The aim of this research is to find out the kinds of figure of speech and their meaning of figure of speech in two songs. The writer analyzes songs entitled Bullet in the Head, and No Shelter. In this research, the writer uses qualitative research with descriptive analysis as the method of the research. The writer analyzes the lyrics by reading them intensively and giving attention to each line. After that, the writer tries to explicate the songs by examining the figure of speech. From the two lyrics, the writer has found seven types of figure of speech; they are Simile, Metaphor, Personification, Metonymy, Symbol, Allegory, and Hyperbole. The two lyrics have a similar theme, railed against the corporate America. The first lyrics, Bullet in the Head is a lyric about the songwriter criticizes the TV Corporations and other news corporation distract people from the big issues of the world and influence them to be mass consumerism. -

Timesthe elder de la Rocha was part of a landmark Chicano art exhibition in Rage Against the Machine: Stage Fighters mid-'70s, but shortly afterward, he destroyed all his paintings and retreated from the art world for 20 years. -

I just had to in this case. There weren’t any albums in the 30s. 1959 Miles Davis Kind Of Blue He could play the trumpet a bit. This is arguably the best known full-on jazz album of all time. It had just enjoyed its 40 th anniversary on first compilation of this list. I’m not qualified to write about Miles Davis, but this I know. Despite his tetchy character, especially in defence of blacks against the white establishment (understandably), he did not come from a typical poor black background. His family were quite affluent and middle class, in as far as it was possible for blacks to be middle class in the US at that time. 1964 John Coltrane A Love Supreme He could play the sax a bit. The album was the result of Coltrane’s sudden religious awakening in 1957. Brilliant – apart from the embarrassing vocals. You're getting jazz and old-time blues up to '64 because The Great Musical Reinvention had not yet happened - but it was just around the corner... 1965 Jackson C Frank Jackson C Frank Aficionados know that this is the best folk album of all time. -

Beginning in 1990, Tool have become highly influential for several music movements, produced multi-platinum selling records topping the charts in several countries, and won three Grammy Awards, yet due to their intense and multi- layered music, they have remained an alternative act; A Perfect Circle met with similar response. Unlike most of music bands, Tool are a democratic group in the sense that no “spokesman” for the band exists and A Perfect Circle was started by its guitarist Billy Howerdell; however, Keenan’s lyrics are important, for they provide a context for the music. He approaches many issues in his songs, such as personal feelings, manipulation, social criticism, hypocrisy, religion or censorship. -

Among the issues addressed by protest music are workers’ organizing rights, prejudice along racial and gender lines, and a critique of law enforcement. Through defiance and redefinition, protest music seeks to give voice to the many excluded people in society, particularly Black and brown people, and provides a new perspective of what the world could be when these marginalized identities are included. But contemporary understandings of what protest music is suffer from race-neutral or colorblind ideas. This project begins by considering the challenges of defining protest music, with a critical eye on aesthetic entanglements of American folk and protest music from the 1960s and 70s. -
