  • Ogma's Tale: the Dagda and the Morrigan at the River Unius
Ogma’s Tale: The Dagda and the Morrigan at the River Unius Presented to Whispering Lake Grove for Samhain, October 30, 2016 by Nathan Large A tale you’ve asked, and a tale you shall have, of the Dagda and his envoy to the Morrigan. I’ve been tasked with the telling: lore-keeper of the Tuatha de Danann, champion to two kings, brother to the Good God, and as tied up in the tale as any… Ogma am I, this Samhain night. It was on a day just before Samhain that my brother and the dark queen met, he on his duties to our king, Nuada, and Lugh his battle master (and our half-brother besides). But before I come to that, let me set the stage. The Fomorians were a torment upon Eireann and a misery to we Tuatha, despite our past victory over the Fir Bolg. Though we gained three-quarters of Eireann at that first battle of Maige Tuireadh, we did not cast off the Fomor who oppressed the land. Worse, we also lost our king, Nuada, when the loss of his hand disqualified him from ruling. Instead, we accepted the rule of the half-Fomorian king, Bres, through whom the Fomorians exerted their control. Bres ruined the court of the Tuatha, stilling its songs, emptying its tables, and banning all competitions of skill. None of the court could perform their duties. I alone was permitted to serve, and that only to haul firewood for the hearth at Tara. Our first rejection of the Fomor was to unseat Bres, once Nuada was whole again, his hand restored.

W. ROLLESTON MYTHS & LEGENDS OF THE CELTIC RACE CONSTABLE - LONDON [8] British edition published by Constable and Company Limited, London First published 1911 by George G. Harrap & Co., London [9] PREFACE The Past may be forgotten, but it never dies. The elements which in the most remote times have entered into a nation's composition endure through all its history, and help to mould that history, and to stamp the character and genius of the people. The examination, therefore, of these elements, and the recognition, as far as possible, of the part they have actually contributed to the warp and weft of a nation's life, must be a matter of no small interest and importance to those who realise that the present is the child of the past, and the future of the present; who will not regard themselves, their kinsfolk, and their fellow-citizens as mere transitory phantoms, hurrying from darkness into darkness, but who know that, in them, a vast historic stream of national life is passing from its distant and mysterious origin towards a future which is largely conditioned by all the past wanderings of that human stream, but which is also, in no small degree, what they, by their courage, their patriotism, their knowledge, and their understanding, choose to make it.

Some of the essential female deities are Morrigan , Badb , and Nemain the three war goddess who appeared as ravens during battles. The Gods told us to do it. Thus over time, Belenus was also associated with the healing and regenerative aspects of Apollo , with healing shrines dedicated to the dual entities found across western Europe, including the one at Sainte-Sabine in Burgundy and even others as far away as Inveresk in Scotland. In most ancient mythical narratives, we rarely come across divine entities that are solely associated with language. Most of the records were taken around the 11 th century. In any case, Aengus turned out to be a lively man with a charming if somewhat whimsical character who always had four birds hovering and chirping around his head. They were a pagan people, who did not believe in written language.

  • Ancient Irish Rhetoric
Rhetoric of Myth, Magic, and Conversion: Ancient Irish Rhetoric Of our conflicts with others we make rhetoric; of our conflicts with ourselves we make poetry—William Butler Yeats Our first tendency is to look outside Europe when searching for ancient rhetorics that do not follow the Greco-Roman tradition. After all, much of European culture was strongly influenced by Roman culture, especially following the conquests of Julius Caesar in 58-51 BCE and subsequent conquests that brought most of Europe under Roman control. Rome’s civic practices, including variations of Greco-Roman rhetoric, were eventually taught in most parts of the continent. Even after the fall of the Roman Empire in 476 A.D., Greco-Roman rhetoric continued to flourish in Europe, because St. Augustine, a generation earlier, had re-purposed it for the Roman Catholic Church in his On Christian Doctrine (426 A.D.). Ireland, however, offers us an interesting exception to Romanized Europe. The island’s remoteness allowed it to preserve much of its Celtic culture while keeping at arm’s length the cultural influences of Rome and much of medieval Europe. The Irish traded with the Roman world, and eventually they were converted to Christianity after the arrival of St. Patrick in 431 AD. Nevertheless, Irish culture stood apart from European culture, especially during the crucial period of the so-called “Dark Ages” from the fifth to ninth centuries. It was not until the date 1172 AD, when England’s Henry II conquered Ireland, that we might mark Ireland’s capitulation to European civic and educational practices—and then only as a conquered people.

  • Lugh at the Gates of Tara: Gamal's Tale
Lugh at the Gates of Tara: Gamal’s Tale Presented to Whispering Lake Grove for Lughnassadh, August 5th, 2018 by Nathan Large Look at this lot! A rowdy crowd, to be sure. In my time, we were more discriminating who we allowed into our gatherings. A person had to be of quality… of value… to be admitted. Then again, this is no High King’s court. I’m sure you’re all fine folk, worth something in your own way. But none of you is Tuatha De Danann. I know you’ve no bard the equal of our Ogma, or a smith like Goibniu, and certainly no leader like King Nuada. And no one living is the equal of Lugh Samildanach, the many-skilled. No one living back then was, either. Master of all skills. High King in his time. Unequalled in battle. But at first, when Lugh came to the gates of Teamhair at Tara, in Eireann, we didn’t know his quality. It was my job, with my partner, Camal -- I’m Gamal, by the way -- to guard the doors of that hall. We kept out undesirables, folk with nothing to offer. And we certainly weren’t about to let in some stranger, handsome as he might be. I said to him, “Who are you?” and he replies, “I am Lugh, son of Cian of the Tuatha de Danann and of Ethlinn, daughter of Balor, a King of the Fomor.” Now, I knew who Balor was. A one-eyed hideous monster, that’s what. And I knew Cian personally: a clever man and a handsome one.

I had to see what was happening. Nice spear. Smells like bread baking. Reminds me of something… oh yes, it’s Lughnassadh, the Festival of Lugh. Of course. Well, then, I have just the tale for you. You may know Lugh in many ways: god, king, warrior, smith, poet, son of Cian, grandson of Diancecht, father of Cuchulainn… and you may have heard him named in many ways: Lugh the Bright, Lamhfada (Long-Handed or Long-Arm), Lonnbeimnech (Fierce Striker), Macniu (boy hero), Samildanach (the Many-Skilled) … But how did he earn that last title? Why do so many know him by so many different aspects? People these days have a term, ‘Renaissance Man.’ They mean someone talented at many skills - art, science, engineering, writing - like your Benjamin Franklin, or Hedy Lamarr, or the prototype, Leonardo da Vinci. But such multifaceted talent existed long before the ‘Renaissance’. Compared to Lugh the Many-Skilled, your modern examples are mere amateurs. Dilettantes! Pretenders! Lugh had many teachers. His father was the hero Cian of the Tuatha de Danann, his mother Ethniu, daughter of the Fomorian king, Balor One-Eye. But Lugh had to be stolen away to foster, because Balor ordered him killed after his birth was discovered. A druid had foretold that the dread king would be overthrown and slain by a son of his daughter. The boy was thrown into the sea, but rescued by Manannan mac Lir and brought away to foster.

  • Celtic Mythology and Myth-History
Celtic Mythology and Myth-History There are more sources, and hence more names, for Irish mythology than for Welsh. Some of the figures are analogous, but the lateness of the Welsh sources obscures what common elements there may have been. There does not exist, in either case, the highly organized body of multiple stories associated with the "gods," nor are Celtic mythical figures as clearly delineated in terms of function as are the Greek, Roman, or Egyptian gods. In both groups, sacred space tends to be defined by natural phenomena, especially forests and groves. "Fairy" mounds, both natural and artificial also figure in both mythologies. The "Other World," almost always separated from the everyday world by the thinnest of boundaries, can be located either within a mound or across the sea. Irish The Irish Literary "Cycles": The Mythological Cycle (includes The Second Battle of Mag Tuired) The Ulster Cycle (includes the Táin Bó Cuailgne) The Finn Cycle (stories of Finn macCumaill; sometimes called the Ossianic cycle after Oisin, Finn's son) The Historical Cycle (assorted legends of kings) The Mythical Settlements of Ireland (From the Book of Invasions): Cessair Partholon Nemed (progenitor of the next two groups; opponent of the indigenous Fomorians) Fir Bolg (fled to the Aran Islands after the first Battle of Mag Tuired) Tuatha Dé Danann (fought the Fomorians in the Second Battle of Mag Tuired; retired to the sídh [fairy mounds]) Sons of Mil (Gaels) Important Persons of the Tuatha Dé: Lugh (called Lamfhada or "Long-Armed" and "Samildanach"

  • Cultural Identity Represented: Celticness in Ireland
Ethnologie Cultural identity represented: Celticness in Ireland Inaugural-Dissertation zur Erlangung des Doktorgrades der Philosophischen Fakultät der Westfälischen Wilhelms-Universität zu Münster (Westf.) vorgelegt von Sabine Hezel aus Oberhausen 2006 Tag des Abschlusses: 16.11.2006 Dekan: Univ.-Prof. Dr. Dr. Wichard Woyke Referent: Univ.-Prof. Dr. Josephus D.M. Platenkamp Korreferent: Univ.-Prof. Dr. Andreas Hartmann Acknowledgements I would like to express my thanks to all the people in Ireland who gave me valuable assistance in the researching of this thesis. First of all I want to thank Ann Tighe and Claire Sheridan. Without their friendship and help in distributing questionnaires and introducing me to a number of people, my stay in Galway would have been a lot less informative (and less pleasant). Thanks also to all the people who filled out questionnaires and were willing to give interviews. I am especially grateful for the opportunity to work in my own office, which was provided by the Department of Political Science and Sociology of the National University Ireland, Galway, and the help that was provided by Dr. Niall O Dochartaigh. Special thanks also to my PhD tutor Prof. Dr. J. Platenkamp. His continually constructive and helpful critique substantially contributed to the completion of this thesis. But above all my thanks go to Dave Hegarty. His love, patience and understanding were an inexhaustible source for strength and support.
