Paideia - the Philosophy of Making Connections: All Southwestern students participate in Paideia experiences throughout the curriculum. disciplines. All other courses explicitly acknowledge the connections between ideas within their own course material; many will point to intersections with other courses. All majors include an opportunity to consider how various skills and ideas connect across the department or program and culminate in a Capstone experience. In addition to these integrated Paideia experiences, Southwestern encourages students to choose a more intensive Paideia path that includes elements above and beyond the graduation requirements for all students and leads to the designation of Paideia with Distinction. Campus: 701 acres, of which 100 acres is used for the academic campus. Facilities include two live- performance theaters, a spacious sports/recreational center, a geographic information systems (GIS) lab, and observatory, a community garden, and a teaching greenhouse. 77% of students live in residential housing on campus, which offers internet, cable, and voicemail access. Student Organizations: Approximately 100 student organizations: scholastic and honorary, government, Greek, special interest, and departmental. Off Campus and International Study: A London experience available each fall along with programs in places such as France, Italy, Costa Rica, China and Australia as well as access to universities around the world through the International Student Exchange Program. 22% of students study abroad. International student and foreign language clubs. Civic Engagement: In the 2016-2017 Academic year, over 77% of students volunteered on campus or in the community. Students gave more than 13,500 service hours annually at more than 100 local non- profits and agencies. Sustainability: Southwestern was the second university in Texas to sign the Talloires Declaration, a formal commitment to sustainability in higher education. In 2009, Southwestern also signed the College and University Presidents Climate Commitment. Southwestern has two LEED-certified buildings: the Wilhelmina Cullen Admission Center and the Prothro Center for Lifelong Learning. In addition, Southwestern was the first university in Texas to change to 100% wind energy. Athletics: NCAA Division III competition for men and women in basketball, cross country, golf, lacrosse, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis, and track and field; men’s baseball and football, and women’s softball and volleyball. The book says the University is “one of the few jewels of the Southwest whose mission is to prepare a new generation to contribute to a changing society, and to prosper in their jobs, whatever and wherever in the world they may be.” Southwestern is also included in The Princeton Review’s 2019 edition of The Best 384 Colleges, a book its authors say chooses schools “primarily for their outstanding academics.” The book says Southwestern “a draw for “thinkers and learners, for people who like to be challenged and have fun at the same time.” Tuition: $42,000 tuition and fees (2018-2019). Room rates range from $5,080 for a two person room in the oldest residence hall on campus to $14,120 for a one-bedroom apartment in the newest residential center. Meal plans ranging from $2,138 to $6,148 are available. 86% of students enrolled for the fall 2017 semester received financial aid from Southwestern, totaling $34,402,608. Students in the fall 2018 entering class received more than $11.4 million of institutional assistance. Endowment: $281,475,886 as of June 30, 2018.
