Medler INTRODUCTION HIS bulletin attempts to present as accurate and complete a T guide to the leafhoppers of Minnesota as possible within the limits of the material available for study. It is realized that cer- tain groups could not be treated completely because of the lack of available material. Nevertheless, it is hoped that in its present form this treatise will serve as a convenient and useful manual for the systematic and economic worker concerned with the forms of the upper Mississippi Valley. In all cases a reference to the original description of the species and genus is given. Keys are included for the separation of species, genera, and supergeneric groups. In addition to the keys a brief diagnostic description of the important characters of each species is given. Extended descriptions or long lists of references have been omitted since citations to this literature are available from other sources if ac- tually needed (Van Duzee, 1917). -

College Park. MD 20742 USA: email: [email protected] Abstract. For over 150 years, the proper taxonomic placement of Phyllocnistis Zeller has remained largely uncertain. The genus shares morphological and life history traits with several different families of Microlepidoptera, and these characteristics have made it challenging for microlepidopterists to correctly place the genus. Phyllocnistis includes P. citrella Stainton, a globally important economic pest of citrus. We review the taxonomic history of Phyllocnistis and provide a comprehensive list of references. Introduction The leaf-mining genus Phyllocnistis ZeUer, 1848 is an example of a poorly studied genus whose taxonomic placement has vacillated between many different families. Eighty seven species of Phyllocnistis are described worldwide (De Prins & De Prins 2005, 2009), 36 from the Oriental region, 17 from Australasia, 15 from the Palaearctic, and 12 each from the Nearctic and Neotropical regions. Only five are known to occur in the Afrotropical region (De Prins & De Prins 2005, 2009). -

Sasaki first described this leaf-miner in 190i) and again in 1910. め However , its complete life-history has not been worked out until 1909 , when Kuwana and Takachiho studied this insect at the Imperial Agricul- tural tural Experiment Station ,Tokyo ,and published their re 叩lt in 1911. め In In their paper they used Lyolletia clerkella L. as the spedfic name of this this peach leaf-miner. Since that time no one seems to have studied the life-history life-history of this insect ,though there are a few more descriptions め of it. In In Europe Lyonetia clet ルル L. has been known since the time of Linnaeus. 5 And the accounts of this insect are numerous. Regional Population Dynamics of Argyrotaenia Citrana in Northwest

Title: Regional Population Dynamics of-Argyrotaenia citrana in Northwest Caneberry: Phenology, Overwintering Survivorship, and Movement as Measured by Pheromone Traps and Larval Sampling. Redacted for Privacy Abstract approved: Developmental requirements were determined for both larva and pupa as 503 and 176 degree-days (dd) above a lower threshold of 5°C. Adult emergence occurred from 300 to 700 dd accumulated from January 1st. Cumulative male emergence preceded female's by 50- 80 dd. A PETE phenology model modified to include a temperature-dependent female activity function to regulate oviposition significantly improved prediction of egg hatch. Two pheromone trap catch peaks occurred in fields with overwintering populations. The first coincided with peak male emergence; as female emergence peaked, pheromone trap catches declined. The second peak occurred after 750 dd and varied in size with the first peak. The influence of female moth/pheromone trap competition on temporal patterns of trap catch was studied in a semi-enclosed courtyard. Three distinct periods of pheromone trap catch interpretation each bounded by a specific ratio of active males-to-calling females were seen. Two trap catch peaks typically occurred. Field sampling of overwintering populations, laboratory temperature bioassays, and controlled field experiments demonstrated that age-specific differences in cold hardiness exist among larval stages and correlation of historical winter temperatures with pheramone trap catch suggests winter severity is a major factor influencing the timing of spring emergence. A large grid of pheromone traps canbined with larval sampling were used to assess regional overwintering survivorship and seasonal movement patterns. -

A total of 46 species of Auchenorrhyncha are reported from the Maltese Islands. They belong to the following families: Cixiidae (3 species), Delphacidae (7 species), Meenoplidae (1 species), Dictyopharidae (1 species), Tettigometridae (2 species), Issidae (2 species), Cicadidae (1 species), Aphrophoridae (2 species) and Cicadellidae (27 species). Since the Auchenorrhyncha fauna of Malta was never studied as such, 40 species reported in this work represent new records for this country and of these, Tamaricella complicata, an eastern Mediterranean species, is confirmed for the European territory. One species, Balclutha brevis is an established alien associated with the invasive Fontain Grass, Pennisetum setaceum. From a biogeographical perspective, the most interesting species are represented by Falcidius ebejeri which is endemic to Malta and Tachycixius remanei, a sub-endemic species so far known only from Italy and Malta. Three species recorded from Malta in the Fauna Europaea database were not found during the present study. KEY WORDS. Malta, Mediterranean, Planthoppers, Leafhoppers, new records. INTRODUCTION The Auchenorrhyncha is represented by a large group of plant sap feeding insects commonly referred to as leafhoppers, planthoppers, cicadas, etc. They occur in all terrestrial ecosystems where plants are present. Some species can transmit plant pathogens (viruses, bacteria and phytoplasmas) and this is often a problem if the host-plant happens to be a cultivated plant. -
