Data are_included from a survey instrument which was returned by 1,079 public' And nonpublic Louisiana schools. Currently 345 of.the responding Schools are using computers in instruction. A summaryof findings, which includes seven data tables, is followed by conclusions and recommendations. The major part of_the report comprises appeddices that are designed to enable educators to Iodate . schools using similar computers in similar areas in order to share ideas, educational software, and hardware information.. Included are the survey instrument and an indication of,the grade levelsand subject areas in which schools reported using computers, a list showing the make and model of computer used listed byschOol, and a list by computer make of the schools using specific cotputers. The latest International Computerquest Corporation analysis of the market for UNIX- based computers landed on three desks on the same morning. Noel Sharp, founder, chief executive officer, chief engineer and chief bottle washer for the Superbly Quick Architecture Workstation Company (SQAWC) in Mountain View, California hoped to see strong growth predicted for the market for systems designed to help architects improve their designs. In New York, Bo Thomas, senior strategist for the UNIX systems division of A Big Computer Company (ABCC), hoped that general commercial markets for UNIX-based computer systems would show strong growth, but feared that the company's traditional mainframe and mini-computer sales would suffer as a result. Airborne in the middle of the Atlantic, Jean-Helmut Morini-Stokes, senior engineer for the UNIX division of European Electronic National Industry (EENI), immediately looked to see if European companies would finally have an impact on the American market for UNIX-based systems. After looking for analysis concerning their own companies, all three managers checked the outlook for the alliances competing to establish a UNIX operating system standard. Although their companies were alike only in being fictional, the three managers faced the same product standards issues. How could they hasten the adoption of a UNIX standard? The market simply would not grow until computer buyers and application software developers could count on operating system stability. -

Modern Packet Switch Design White Paper Northforge Innovations Inc. September 2016 1 Introduction This white paper surveys the architectural evolution of Ethernet packet switches, featuring an overview of early packet switch design and the forces that have driven modern design solutions. These forces, which include increased interface speed, increased number of ports, Software-Defined Networking (SDN), Deep Packet Inspection (DPI), and Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) have had a major impact on the architecture and design of modern packet switches. All Packet Switches Are Divided Into Three Parts The networking industy has been building LAN-based packet switches (including under this rubric, LAN Bridges, MPLS Switches, and IP Routers) since the early-mid 1980s. The three functional components of a packet switch have been stable since the beginning. • Data plane – The primary job of a packet switch is to move packets from an input interface to an output interface. Moving the data from input to output is the job of the data plane (sometimes called the forwarding plane). • Control plane – The data plane decides which output port to select for each arriving packet based on a set of tables that are built by the control plane. For an Ethernet Switch, the control plane includes the process that learns MAC addresses, the spanning tree protocol, etc. For an IP router, the control plane includes the various IP routing protocols (e.g., OSPF and IS-IS). • Management plane – All packet switches require some configuration. In addition, they include mechanisms for fault detection and reporting, statistics collection, and troubleshooting. This is all done by the management plane. -

By Michael Holley http://www.swtpc.com/mholley/Apple/allied_computer.htm Written Nov 2005, revised Feb 2016 When I was going to the College of San Mateo (1975-1977) I worked at a local computer store, Allied Computers. My job was to assemble computers kits. This included IMSAI, Processor Tech, SWTPC and any other kit that a customer wanted assembled. I would take my pay in computer parts. The first pay check was a SWTPC CT-1024 terminal followed by a SWTPC 6800 computer. By November of 1976 I had a complete system running BASIC. Chet Harris, the store owner, was trying to set up a chain like the Byte Shops and Computer Land. I got to meet some interesting people then, like a field trip to Bill Godbout's where we met Bill and George Morrow. Chet and I went to the Computer Shack store in San Leandro to talk with the management in early 1977. Radio Shack claimed trademark infringement on name Computer Shack so it was changed to Computer Land. One of our customers at Allied Computer was Bill Kelly. He was working for Regis McKenna Advertising on the Apple II introduction. He has a web page that talks about the early days at Apple Computer. (www.kelleyad.com/Histry.htm) He had worked on the Intel account and had an Intel SDK-80 evaluation board that he gave me in exchange for a power supply for his prototype Apple II board. (I still have that SDK-80 board with tiny BASIC.) We sold Apple II main boards before the plastic case was ready. -

Its ascent has been rapid but not linear; it has experienced setbacks along the way. This paper will analyze Apple’s evolution over the past decade and future prospects, with an eye toward identifying opportunities and challenges for global expansion. 2 The Rise of Apple Inc: Opportunities and Challenges Garcia Marrero in the International Marketplace BACKGROUND In 1976, Apple Inc. began as a garage operation by three men: Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak and Ronald Wayne (Ellen Terrell, 2008). The entire company was based solely on the engineering genius of Wozniak and the entrepreneurial and innovative genius of Jobs. Wayne sold out his shares of Apple to Jobs and Wozniak. Only weeks after its founding, Jobs and Wozniak were the sole owners of the company when it was fully incorporated in 1977 (Terrell, 2008). The company was based on the design, manufacturing, and selling of a new kind of operating computer designed by Wozniak, revolutionizing the world of the personal computer. Apple I was soon superseded by its successor the Apple II, which became the platform for VisiCalc, the first ever spreadsheet program (Terrell, 2008). Apple saw growth like no other during its first ten years of life as sales, but overall revenue saw an exponential growth every four months.
