8018: LEO ROTH, ISRAELI (1914 - 2002) USD 1,500 - 2,000
Depicts numerous human figures in an abstract form. Leo Roth (1914–2002), also known as Lior Roth, was an Israeli painter, born in 1914 in Austria-Hungary. In 1920, Roth moved to Germany and, in 1933, immigrated to Palestine. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and completed frescoes in Italy and France in the 1950s. Roth first settled in Tel Aviv, then moved to Kvutzat Kinneret, then finally to Kibbutz Afikim where he remained until his death. He served as Director of the Art Academy of the Kibbutzim. In 1959, he was awarded the Jordan Valley Prize for Painting. Roth exhibited in the United States, Israel, Mexico, Spain, Holland, Sweden, and Denmark. He died in 2002.Roth's work was influenced by Cubism and bears much in common with the work of compatriot painter Naftali Bezem. His colourful canvases contain biblical imagery and references to early Israeli pioneer culture. The record sold price for this artist is USD $6,900 for his work, The Shear, which was sold at Montefiore in 2015.H: 9 in. L: 6 1/2 in.

Sold at Matsart Auctioneers & Appraisers, Jerusalem in 2005.Born in Warsaw, Poland, in 1903, Simon Karczmar studied art in Paris, where he lived for twenty years. Although he left France for Israel in 1962, most of his work evokes his experiences in Eastern Europe.In this series of images known collectively as Shtetl, Karczmar draws inspiration from his childhood memories of the vacations he spent at his grandfather's house in Lithuania. The word shtetl is Yiddish for little town and refers to the villages with significant Jewish populations that could once be found throughout Eastern Europe.The nostalgia of Karczmar's renderings contrasts with the darker views of life for Jews revealed in the photographs by Vishniac and drawings of Lilien. While the photographs in The Vanished World seem to emphasize the deprivation experienced by Jews in the years leading up to World War II, Karczmar depicts similar scenes yet focuses on the sense of community and tradition. 8201: FREDERIC M. GRANT, AMERICAN (1886 – 1959) USD 800 - 1,200
Hand signed by Frederic M. Grant (American, 1886–1959).Grant taught and exhibited actively in Chicago. Beginning in 1919 he was a resident of the Tree Studios building on the Near North Side, where he joined a community of more-conservative artists. Grant had solo exhibitions at the Carson Pirie Scott and Company department store galleries and Anderson Galleries, and he won several prizes in the Art Institute’s annual shows. Lauded by the Chicago Tribune’s critic Eleanor Jewett as an artist “undisturbed by the muddy tumult of modernism,? he also won the respect of Clarence J. Bulliet, a champion of modernism, who profiled Grant in 1936 in his series “Artists of Chicago? in the Chicago Daily News.i In the following years, Grant was less visible in the local art scene. After World War II he moved to the Los Angeles area (where his parents had settled earlier) and began painting abstract works inspired by musical compositions.Record sold price for this artist is USD $24,000, which was sold at John Moran Auctioneers in 2016.H: 8 in. Still life, as a particular genre, began with Netherlandish painting of the 16th and 17th centuries, and the English term still life derives from the Dutch word still even. Early still-life paintings, particularly before 1700, often contained religious and allegorical symbolism relating to the objects depicted. Later still-life works are produced with a variety of media and technology, such as found objects, photography, computer graphics, as well as video and sound.The term includes the painting of dead animals, especially game. Live ones are considered animal art, although in practice they were often painted from dead models. Because of the use of plants and animals as a subject, the still-life category also shares commonalities with zoological and especially botanical illustration. However, with visual or fine art, the work is not intended merely to illustrate the subject correctly.Still life occupied the lowest rung of the hierarchy of genres, but has been extremely popular with buyers. As well as the independent still-life subject, still-life painting encompasses other types of painting with prominent still-life elements, usually symbolic, and "images that rely on a multitude of still-life elements ostensibly to reproduce a 'slice of life'". The trompe-l'Å“il painting, which intends to deceive the viewer into thinking the scene is real, is a specialized type of still life, usually showing inanimate and relatively flat objects. H: 8 in.
