And it is only that he has been able to comply with the wish of the Crown Princess by inviting th e Berlin pub lie t o judge of the musical ac co mplishments of t wo of his m ost talented pupils . Certainly , those who heard their performances carried away a very high opinion of their merit, as was testified by the enthusiastic applause at the close of each piece . character ; indeed, fewer and smaller defects were observable throughout

- the performance than often occur at the best high class concerts, while some features of t h e singi ng made that department of the concert superior o to the singing at many of th e ki nd of concerts we refer to . Ad pting the

high standard of criticism we have indicated, and making no allowance for i the bl ndness of the artistes , because they really seemed not to need it, we are bound to say that t h e instrumental port-ion of the concert was sustained and with great tech nical skill , high artistic taste intelligence , and beautiful c r effect . The singing from beginning to end had its lessons for our local vocalists , and t r indeed for many professionals , which both would do well to y to learn more , perfectly than they have hitherto done , though much progress has been

Those lessons were main y in voice production r method of which exemplified by the choir was little short of pe fect, and in absence of shouting , and display of the power of sweetness and expressive v v ness . The result of much ha ing been e idently made by the professors of the College of these two points must have been patent to all present in the d exquisite purity of intonation , perfect ensemble, and beauty of sha ing which perva ded the singing of the choir throughout the programme . n . whil e there was all this refinement there was o weakness, but a polished l sonority, a charm of accent, and a clearness of articu ation and delivery of words which were most praiseworthy and ef ective .
