If you see his compositions, many of them start from that point, and are very free and fantasy-like. For this reason the French didn’t think too highly of Bossi. CD: Would I be right that the Germans held similar views of Italian improvisation? EF: Probably worse! Although another of our really good improvisers, Lorenzo Perosi was invited to become a teacher in Regensburg. He chose however to remain in Italy to help change Italian church music from opera to sacred music, following the Papal decree. CD: Is it true that in Italy, the Mass provides fewer opportunities for liturgical improvi- sation than it does here? EF: Yes.     BHP 901 - BACH: GOLDBERG VARIATIONS - English Suite No. 5 in e - Millicent Silver, Harpsichord _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ This disc, the first in our Heritage Performances Series, celebrates the career and the artistry of Millicent Silver, who for some forty years was well-known as a regular performer in London and on BBC Radio both as soloist and as harpsichordist with the London Harpsichord Ensemble which she founded with her husband John Francis. Though she made very few recordings, we are delighted to preserve this recording of the Goldberg Variations for its musical integrity, its warmth, and particularly the use of tonal dynamics (adding or subtracting of 4’ and 16’ stops to the basic 8’) which enhances the dramatic architecture. Millicent Irene Silver was born in South London on 17 November 1905. Her father, Alfred Silver, had been a boy chorister at St. George’s Chapel, Windsor where his singing attracted the attention of Queen Victoria, who had him give special performances for her. He earned his living playing the violin and oboe. His wife Amelia was an accomplished and busy piano teacher. Millicent was the second of their four children, and her musical talent became evident in time-honoured fashion when she was discovered at the age of three picking out on the family’s piano the tunes she had heard her elder brother practising. Eventually Millicent Silver won a scholarship to the Royal College of Music in London where, as was more common in those days, she studied equally both piano and violin. She was awarded the Chappell Silver Medal for piano playing and, in 1928, the College’s Tagore Gold Medal for the best student of her year.

    Pearls and rarities of the Welte organ roll collection by David Rumsey Hofner, Diebold, Philipp and the world’s earliest recorded organists The earliest-born of all Welte’s organists seem to have been Carl Hofner and Johann Diebold. Judging by the catalogue numbers Franz Philipp, born half a century later, was possibly the first organist ever to record while still a student (see later). The honour of being first might also have been bestowed on one or two other now-obscure identities, e.g. A. Maenner or “Frey”. However, Hofner and Diebold had at least 5 known rolls rolls released by 1912, Philipp only one (Salvator Rosa’s Canzonetta:Nah und fern on W474). Maenner’s only known dated release is 1922 which is also about when Philipp’s main output of rolls started to appear. Some of these early rolls might have been played in Turin at the 1911 exhibition which ran from April to October, since the advertizing expressly stated: “Philharmonie- Orgel mit Künstlerrollen” (Philharmonic Organ with artist-recorded rolls)1. EN4 9RJ 01-440 2651 EDITORIAL Vol. 5, no. 6 September 1988 The first weekend in June (sounds like a song-title!) was one of the most enjoyable for Society members for some years. At least it was greatly enjoyed by those who attended the various events. Structured round the AGM in Great Malvern, the committee were the first to benefit from the hospitality of Lawnside. We met in the Library, passing first the awful warning “No hockey sticks or tennis racquets upstairs” (and we didn’t take any), and we were charmingly escorted round the somewhat confusing grounds and corridors by some of the girls of the school. After a lunch in the drawing room where the famous grand piano on which Elgar & GBS played duets at that first Malvern Festival so long ago, was duly admired (and played on), we went to the main school buildings for the AGM.
