Introduction to Focus 2020 by Joel Sachs The seed for this year’s Focus Festival was planted in December 2018 at a Juilliard doctoral recital by the Chilean violist Sergio Muñoz Leiva. I was especially struck by the sonata of Rebecca Clarke, an Anglo-American composer of the early 20th century who has been known largely by that one piece, now a staple of the viola repertory. Thinking about the challenges she faced in establishing her credibility as a professional composer, my mind went to a group of women in that period, roughly 1885 to 1930, who struggled to be accepted as professional composers rather than as professional performers writing as a secondary activity or as amateur composers.

  • Selected Organ Works of Joseph Ahrens: a Stylistic Analysis of Freely Composed Works and Serial Compositions
Selected Organ Works of Joseph Ahrens: A Stylistic Analysis of Freely Composed Works and Serial Compositions A document submitted to The Graduate School of the University of Cincinnati in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF MUSICAL ARTS in the Keyboard Studies Division of the College-Conservatory of Music 2013 by Eun Hye Kim MM, University of Cincinnati, 2007 MM, Hansei University, 2004 BA, Seoul Jangsin University and Theological Seminary, 2002 Committee Chair: Roberta Gary, DMA Committee Member: John Deaver, DMA Committee Member: David Berry, PhD Abstract Joseph Ahrens (1904–97) was a twentieth-century German composer, virtuoso organist, and teacher. He was a professor of church music at the Berlin Academy of Music (Berlin Hochschule für Musik), organist at the Cathedral of St. Hedwig, and choir director and organist at the Salvator Church in Berlin. He contributed to twentieth-century church music, especially of the Roman Catholic Church, and composed many works for organ and various choral forces. His organ pieces comprise chorale-based pieces, free (non-chorale) works, liturgical pieces, and serial compositions. He was strongly influenced by twentieth-century German music trends such as the organ reform movement, neo-baroque style, and, in his late period, serial techniques. This document examines one freely composed work and two serial compositions by Joseph Ahrens: Canzone in cis (1944), Fantasie und Ricercare (1967), and Trilogia Dodekaphonica (1978). The purpose is to demonstrate that Ahrens’s style developed throughout his career, from a post-Wagnerian harmonic language to one that adopted twentieth-century techniques, including serialism, while retaining the use of developed thematic material and a connection to neo-baroque characteristics in terms of forms and textures.

  • Suffering and Social Conscience in the Passion Genre from JS Bach's
Messiahs and Pariahs: Suffering and Social Conscience in the Passion Genre from J.S. Bach’s St. Matthew Passion (1727) to David Lang’s the little match girl passion (2007) Johann Jacob Van Niekerk A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Musical Arts University of Washington 2014 Reading Committee: Giselle Wyers, Chair Geoffrey Boers Shannon Dudley Program Authorized to Offer Degree: School of Music ©Copyright 2014 Johann Jacob Van Niekerk University of Washington Abstract Messiahs and Pariahs: Suffering and Social Conscience in the Passion Genre from J.S. Bach’s St. Matthew Passion (1727) to David Lang’s the little match girl passion (2007) Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Giselle Wyers Associate Professor of Choral Music and Voice The themes of suffering and social conscience permeate the history of the sung passion genre: composers have strived for centuries to depict Christ’s suffering and the injustice of his final days. During the past eighty years, the definition of the genre has expanded to include secular protagonists, veiled and not-so-veiled socio- political commentary and increased discussion of suffering and social conscience as socially relevant themes. This dissertation primarily investigates David Lang’s Pulitzer award winning the little match girl passion, premiered in 2007. David Lang’s setting of Danish author and poet Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Little Match Girl” interspersed with text from the chorales of Johann Sebastian Bach’s St. Matthew Passion (1727) has since been performed by several ensembles in the United States and abroad, where it has evoked emotionally visceral reactions from audiences and critics alike.

  • JULIUS REUBKE the Works for Piano & Organ

INFORMATION TO USERS This was produced from a copy of a document sent to us for microfîlming. While the most advanced technological means to photograph and reproduce this document have been used, the quality is heavily dependent upon the quality of the material submitted. The following explanation of techniques is provided to help you understand markings or notations which may appear on this reproduction. 1. The sign or “target” for pages apparently lacking from the document photographed is “Missing Page(s)”. If it was possible to obtain the missing page(s) or section, they are spliced into the Him along with adjacent pages. This may have necessitated cutting through an image and duplicating adjacent pages to assure you of complete continuity. 2. When an image on the film is obliterated with a round black mark it is an indication that the film inspector noticed either blurred copy because of movement during exposure, or duplicate copy. Unless we meant to delete copyrighted materials that should not have been filmed, you will find a good image of the page in the adjacent frame. 3. When a map, drawing or chart, etc., is part of the material being photo graphed the photographer has followed a definite method in “sectioning” the material. It is customary to begin filming at the upper left hand comer of a large sheet and to continue from left to right in equal sections with small overlaps. If necessary, sectioning is continued again—beginning below the first row and continuing on until complete. 4. For any illustrations that cannot be reproduced satisfactorily by xerography, photographic prints can be purchased at additional cost and tipped into your xerographic copy.

  • Pearls and Rarities of the Welte Organ Roll Collection by David Rumsey
Pearls and rarities of the Welte organ roll collection by David Rumsey Hofner, Diebold, Philipp and the world’s earliest recorded organists The earliest-born of all Welte’s organists seem to have been Carl Hofner and Johann Diebold. Judging by the catalogue numbers Franz Philipp, born half a century later, was possibly the first organist ever to record while still a student (see later). The honour of being first might also have been bestowed on one or two other now-obscure identities, e.g. A. Maenner or “Frey”. However, Hofner and Diebold had at least 5 known rolls rolls released by 1912, Philipp only one (Salvator Rosa’s Canzonetta:Nah und fern on W474). Maenner’s only known dated release is 1922 which is also about when Philipp’s main output of rolls started to appear. Some of these early rolls might have been played in Turin at the 1911 exhibition which ran from April to October, since the advertizing expressly stated: “Philharmonie- Orgel mit Künstlerrollen” (Philharmonic Organ with artist-recorded rolls)1. Carl Hofner 19th/early-20thc German organist and composer, also possibly noted for his improvisation. *1842 Jan 23: Inchenhofen/Augsburg (D) - studied for 5 years at the Munich Conservatorium then spent 8 years as “Music-Prefect” at the monastery school at Metten 1868 Oct: teaching position at the Church Music School in Freiburg/Breisgau; regular duties for the 9 a.m. service at the Münster 1871 Jan 1 began officially as organist at Freiburg Münster 1878 taught Joseph Schildknecht (an important Swiss organist) †1912 May 19 Freiburg (D) Hofner’s playing of Bach’s music represents the closest training to Bach’s own era.
