The Book of Shemot (Names) We are a few weeks away from celebrating the Festival of , the story of our Exodus from Egypt. Interestingly, the Hebrew name for the Book of Exodus, in which our story is found, is called Shemot, meaning "names." It is called this because it opens by sharing the names of the children of Israel and their household who came to Egypt with Jacob, thereby setting the stage for the story of the Exodus. But I think that there is more to this notion of the Exodus from Egypt being couched in a language of "names" than first meets the eye -- particularly when we consider that these very names were already mentioned a few chapters earlier, as the Book of Genesis comes to a close. By repeating this list and starting the Book of Exodus with Shemot , names, the Torah is trying to get us to focus on the importance of knowing who we are, where we come from, and what we are connected to. The message is that one cannot truly be free and one cannot have a complete understanding of what it means to be a part of the Jewish people, unless he/she understands his name, who he/she is, and where he/she comes from.

In other words, from the very beginnings of our existence as a people, our names have been a critical part of our identity. Indeed holding onto our Hebrew names is so important that our rabbis taught that it was one of the reasons that our ancestors merited being freed in the first place (Leviticus Rabbah 32:5).

But here is the question. How many of you actually know your full Hebrew name -- including your parents’ Hebrew names? How many of you know who you were named for, why you were named for these individuals? How many of you understand both the literal meaning of your name, as well as the meaning behind your name? How many of you know this name that was signed on your Bar/Bat mitzvah certificate, is written in your wedding ketubah, and is used when you are called to the Torah?

The other day I was driving with my youngest son in the car and listening to a new CD that we had received in the mail from PJ Library. The CD has one song written by Rick Recht that is all about our Hebrew names, how they were chosen, and how in many cases they represent the values of those who are no longer with us.

I've got all these people in me; A great responsibility; If they could only see me today they'd be proud of me in so many ways; I feel so lucky, I can SAY- that's my name

Someday I'll have kids and my kids will have kids and my grandkids will have more kids, maybe two or three, someday I'll be remembered by a little boy or girl who will be very proud to be named after me....

But as I was singing along to my youngest son and listening to the lyrics, I couldn't help but think about all of the people who routinely come to me with questions about their Hebrew names. They often don't know their Hebrew name and will ask me questions like: " Rabbi, what's Hebrew for Maurice ?" By the way, your Hebrew name is often the same, or an adaptation, of a deceased love one's Hebrew name, and unless you were given a name because of the meaning of a Hebrew word (ie. Hannah, meaning "grace"), Hebrew and English names are not often direct corollaries of one another (ie. there is no direct Hebrew for Maurice). I often find myself in situations where I have to make up a name for an individual, or their parents on the spot -- adapting a workable name for someone prior to a funeral, or when an individual comes up for an aliyah to the Torah and does not know their Hebrew name. But the truth is that I am saddened every time this happens. Because something has been lost. A piece of history, a connection to one's family, the hopes and dreams that went along with that name which someone chose for them -- has now disappeared. Why? Because these names were simply not written down, or not shared and discussed often enough.

While the name that we make for ourselves in life is critically important, the name that was passed down to us from our heritage is equally important. Each of our names is rich and filled with history, meaning, and potential. Each of our names contains the key to discovering who we are, where we come from, and where we are headed in life.

So this Passover, as we gather around our tables in celebration of the Exodus from Egypt, let us remember that our journey began with a list of "names." Let us remember that the Book of Exodus itself is couched in the language of Shemot , and let us strive to hold onto our own individual family histories, and exodus towards unprecedented freedom living as in 21st century America. This year, I invite you to take a moment when you are sitting around your Seder to share your Hebrew names with one another as well as who you were named after. If you don't know your names -- take the opportunity that you have with family members gathered around the Seder table to do some research. Perhaps everyone around the table could consider asking an additional set of four questions this year: 1 . Do I know my Hebrew name? 2. Do I know for whom I was named? 3. What do I know about that person? 4 . Why did my parents choose that particular name? And then, write it down to ensure that your children and grandchildren will know your name, just as our ancestors knew the Shemot of those who came before them when they were enslaved in Egypt.

Have a hag kasher v'Sameach , a joyous and meaningful Passover experience.

FROM THE D ESK OF L AWRENCE S HAPIRO

Last month I highlighted the sustainability commitment letters that went out to all members in the last two weeks and reminded everyone to respond so we could be as accurate as possible this year in our budget process. To that end, your Board thought it was a good idea to remind everyone of what it takes to keep the Temple’s doors open throughout the year. Our yearly operating budget is $910,000 (rounded). Of that, approximately 50% of revenue is raised from your sustainability commitments. This percentage is not unusual for congregations throughout the country. The balance of our operating revenue derives from fundraising, the Yom Kippur appeal, and other donation opportunities. (Contact the office or check out the High Holiday booklet for a list of those opportunities.) Notably, we have had a structural deficit for years. Over the last few years, we have been open and candid about that deficit, instead of hiding it by inflating fundraising or other revenue numbers. This year, the deficit was projected to be $87,000. While we have made strides to close this gap via reinvigorated fundraising and a renewed focus on membership growth, a deficit remains, albeit a reduced one, and will continue to exist year over year. In fact, as in past years, we will be drawing on our line of credit to carry us from March through July when next fiscal year’s commitments start to come in. In August, as we have in past years, we will pay the line of credit back. As a measure of the success of our move to a sustainability model from a dues paying model, we have started our draw on the line of credit about four weeks later than last year. As to expenses, we continue to run a lean and efficient operation, having reduced expenses significantly over the past few years. We will continue to closely monitor costs, reducing them wherever and whenever possible. Notwithstanding the positive steps we have made in cutting expenses and generating revenue, unforeseen situations arise and we have a 40-year-old building to upkeep and maintain. In the coming months, the Board will be weighing and considering needs. For example, the exterior façade of the building is in significant need of attention, as we continue to have water leaks in the Main Sanctuary area. The estimated cost to replace the façade and address the leaks could be as much as $200,000. We are also weighing a refurbishment of the social hall which could be a potential source of additional revenue to the Temple. We anticipate having estimates for that in the next month or so. There are other repairs/upgrades which, although not as pressing, are being considered and prioritized. A comprehensive campaign to raise funds for the building and strengthen our standing endowment is being planned in the not-too-distant future. As you can see, there is much to be done and in an effort to continue to be open and transparent, we want to keep you all informed on where we are and where we are going, particularly in terms of our financial and fiscal standing. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the office or me. Thank you.

This program is co-sponsored by Men’s Club and Sisterhood

For planning purposes please contact the temple office if you will be joining us. 732-531-4410

Larry Roth earned a degree in Journalism from the University of South Carolina in 1978. He returned to New York where he worked briefly as a writer for various trade newspapers and magazines. He later changed his career and become a partner in a global public relations company for nearly thirty years. “The Nazi Account” is Mr. Roth’s first novel. It is currently in the permanent library at Yad Vashem in Jerusalem and can be purchased at the Holocaust Museum in Washington, DC, the National Museum of American Jewish History in Philadelphia, in two other Jewish Museums in New York City and of course on Amazon.com. Mr. Roth won a third place prize for Amazon’s Breakthrough Novelists in 2014.

Mr. Roth lives in Manalapan. He has three daughters and a white dog that still struggles with house training.

“The Nazi Account” is historical fiction and is based on the true incident of the German government’s hiring Carl Byoir & Associates, the largest public relations agency in New York between 1933 and 1934.

The novel is about the moral struggle of one person at the agency who must decide whether to keep his job and feed his family or quit and join his neighbors on the soup line during the world’s worst Depression. Mr. Roth will touch on how deep the roots of anti-Semitism were in the United States during this time. He will also speak to how powerful PR agencies have become since the 1930’s.

Perhaps they are not stars in the sky but rather openings where our loved ones shine down to let us know they are happy

WE’RE HERE FOR YOU ... When my Mom passed away last April, Rabbi Schonbrun suggested attending daily minyan to say Kaddish and explained that it is customary to say Kaddish daily for 11 months for a parent, then yearly on her yahrzeit and Yizkor days. My Mom and I were exceptionally close and I was having a tough time grieving, so I decided to come to morning minyan with a goal of at least 5 days a week. The first day, I was late and I couldn’t figure out which page we were on. It was overwhelming, so I didn’t know if I would return. However Rabbi Schonbrun said to stick with it and it would become easier. I am so glad I did! I now can follow along the short service in the small sanctuary because the leaders remind everyone which page we are on. It has helped me deal with my mom’s death because every morning there has been time to devote to her memory. I am now a “regular” with a group of amazing, warm, friendly, fellow CTE members. Not everyone comes every day, and ALL attendees are welcome. I am writing this to encourage everyone to give minyan a try, morning or evening. Even if you just come once in a while to at least help your fellow congregants have a minyan (10 count) so they can say Kaddish. Just maybe, like me, you will find a peaceful spot in your day or evening and some extra meaning in your life. —Marian Warshauer CTE Minyan Needs Your Help

Our minyanaires are a small group of dedicated individuals who attend Minyan services to be there for all of us. NOW is OUR turn to show we care! Please mark your calendar to be sure you attend one of the minyan services this month. Thank you!
