From the editor

Well, we are now in the full swing of car shows and other events! As you can see in this issue, lots of events have happened already. A gentle reminder to send me pictures and write-ups of any of the events you at- tend, I can’t have too many pictures. This summer, I won’t be attending many events, so I am relying on our members to get the information to me. Have a great summer and “Happy Motoring”

2 BC Triumph Registry - June 2010 President’s Message

BCTR Members: I have been out of town on business so much lately that I'm feeling really out of touch, but I am hoping that I can get my feet on the ground again long enough to participate in this summer's Triumph events.

The ABFM at VanDusen was treat. One thing that seems to happen to me every year at VanDusen is that as long as the day is, I seem to run out of time to do all the things that I want to do there. I suppose that shows how impressive the show grown and satisfies the urges of spring fever for all those who are itching to get their British wheels rolling. A big thanks goes to Brian and Tina Thomlinson for hosting this year's Après ABFM BBQ with the spirited help of the soups chefs and master griller Barrie Puffer.

Regrettably, I did not get to attend the Performance Drive School that Larry organized and from the pictures that I've seen, it looks as thought there was a lot of fun, despite the wet weather. Hopefully we can do another one in a year or two. Say, what ever happened to our go-kart nights ?

Rather than leaving town for the ATDI this year, we stay right at home in Fort Langley, actually right at the Fort itself. The Spoulers have spearheaded the ATDI Committee again this year and have a very special event lined up for us. For my part, I have been working with Brian T and Dennis N on the two drives for the Saturday afternoon and, no, I did not shift into overdrive on any part of the routes. We will need everyone's support as volunteers to make the day go smoothly and to show that we a good hosts.

That's all that I have at the moment, so stay tuned to our website to see what's coming up and plan to participate and drive safely.

Cheers, Jerry 1961 TR3A

May 29, 2010

Our Instructor for the day, Patrick. explains how to keep the weight of your car balanced during the tight manoeuvres.

On Saturday May 29, 15 cars attended the Driving Unlimited playground at Pitt Meadows Airport. It was a rainy day and YES, 6 Triumphs showed up along with one MG(super) B and a Bobs’ lovely Morgan. Some club members brought their family vehicles as their Triumphs were too leaky. We started off with a hot coffee and donuts and Patrick gave us some driving tips for better mirror adjustment, keeping your vision up high and doing controlled brake applications.

Four challenge courses were set up for us in the morning. This is where we would work on our skills and see how our cars would respond. You would enter each course one at a time as an instructor would signal you in. Then you would perform the exercise and exit the course to receive a one on one briefing from the instructor on how to improve your next run through. The moderate speed (40-45K) run up and then apply a rapid hard brake application was the first time I or Keith had ever really locked up our brakes on our Triumphs. It was also nice to know she stopped in a nice straight line without any real pull one way or another. Next came the hard stop while turning a tight corner, the focus was to brake after turning, keep turning and look out the side window at the direc- tion you want the car to go, and not look at where the car is actually going. The slalom was an interesting exercise to get you to look up and beyond the course. An instructor would stand at the end of the cones and if he lifted his arm you are to miss a gate and drive ahead then turn at the next gate. Sometimes he would lift his arm in succession which really kept you off balance; however by keeping your eyes up it prepared you for his signals. Now came the most challenging course. A speed approach into a narrow conned lane- way, a row of cones dead ahead with an instructor standing just behind them looking at you as you approached. As you entered at speed he would give you one of 5 signals and you had to react un- der control and complete the action smoothly. You had to be ready for a quick veer to the left or right, a hard rapid stop, or a combina- tion rapid stop, release and hard veer right or left. A bit unnerving as you were bearing down on him and saying in your head , OK signal, please signal now, S I G N A L Damn you !!!

It was now time for lunch which was arranged by Robert Strath, through the Lunch Doctor. Good eats and plenty of them. Now came the real fun part. Gerry you should have been there because the rain was pooling on the tarmac and presented a great opportu- nity for some real fun time. Two tight circles were conned off tar- geting some of the larger puddles for the under-steer and over- steer correction exercises. Dennis Thompson got his Dolomite going a little too good and spun it out of the circle. You really got to feel how your car reacts when the front or ass end starts to pull

around or push you out of the turn and then make the proper correction. Really great stuff.

The last part of the day was running through a auto-cross course. The idea was to challenge yourself to get smoother and therefore get faster though the course. You could see everyone pushing it more and more. Some cars came to the finish with little red

under their frames or bounced some cones across the tarmac. Your last two runs were timed and the idea was to try to drive both runs with no split time or a little as possible. Wayne Morrison was our champion and pushed his TR 6 to its limit and did both runs in exactly the same time. We finished up around 4 pm and even though we were all a little wet by then, the smiles on everyone’s faces expressed a great deal of happiness and satisfaction. I think this is something the club would enjoy doing again next year.

What did Dave Larrigan do to our coveted DOOR Prize ???

Subject: The “DOOR” From: David Laarigan Date: 4/13/2010 9:32AM To: Jerry Cc: Allan Reich

Jerry:

I have been busy getting ready for upcoming car show season and due to an accident in my garage I had to under- take some major body work on my TR8. Fortunately, I remembered that I was presented with "The DOOR" by the club and with a little bit of work we were able to use it to replace the accidental damaged bit (see attached photo.)

Will the club have any objection if the "DOOR" is painted and straightened in time for Van Dusen? I realize that the "DOOR" is part of the heritage of the TR Register and it will be a challenge to restore it to its former glory but I might be able to do it by the time of the next annual dinner

An early response would be appreciated.

Dave Larrigan

In January, Dave Larrigan was awarded the much-coveted BCTR DOOR PRIZE. This is given out annually to a well-respected member. At the end of the year, it is returned and awarded at the

next banquet to another deserving member. In April, Dave sent an e-mail to our president, Jerry, and copied me. He also attached a picture, showing the use of our door-prize. Then I noticed the date on the picture!!

BC Triumph Registry - June 2010 7 The Lady Mayflower—Linda and Larry Spouler

Linda first laid eyes on a Mayflower at the 2005ATDI in Olympia, WA. She thought it was real cute and just her size. “Oh Great !” , I thought, where would I ever find one of these?”. Well, as things go I was attending the annual car show at KMS tools in Coquitlam and there she way - the Lady Mayflower – mounted on a wall shelf. I asked why the Mayflower was up on the shelf – and was told “We use the car for auto body repair lessons, we bring her down using a fork lift and our students repair holes we punch into the door panels.” “Ever think about selling it ?”, I asked. “Nope”. Well this exchange went on for several years until they said they were chang- Mayflower on wall of KMS Tools ing the way they do things and “Yes” we could make a deal. That was the summer of 2007.

The last time the car was on the road was in 1998 when the Mayflower was purchased at an auction at Seaforth Armoury. The engine lasted 45 min- utes before it konked out and needed to be towed the rest of the way. Since then, it has been on the shelf for eight years at KMS Tools, which resulted in a solid body with very little rust. From the very beginning Barrie became the Lady Mayflower’s best friend. He provided the ride home where the job would begin for the restoration.

After taking 6 years doing my TR4A I set a plan for a 3 year restoration project. A Triumph is a Mayflower coming out of KMS Tools Triumph, I thought this one is just a little older. The tear down began and front suspension parts were first off. It was during this process that I found a very talented body person (Andy) about 1.5 miles away and had him come over to assess this unique find and to a schedule time for paint in the next couple of years. Meantime I also found a note attached to the paperwork inside the car ask- ing whoever bought this car to call a Alf Spence, as he had owned several Mayflowers in the 50’s and could offer some help. Many a visit was made to see Alf and acquire some great history about Mayflowers and to obtain the coveted shop manual.

Alf Spence, July 1958

8 BC Triumph Registry - June 2010 The Lady Mayflower … continued

Now as great a find as the shop manual was, it still was lacking in lots of the finer detailing. While searching online I discovered that there is a “Mayflower Club in England” whose owners drive their Mayflowers and offer great technical help as well as having some spare parts available. We quickly became members and began importing parts from England, like window rubbers and things that would not be available here. As each part came off it was disassembled and laid out so detailed pictures could be taken to assist in the rebuild.

As more things came apart the more I relied on Barrie’s welding expertise, in making up the multi- Example of how things were disassembled tude of small parts and fixtures that would hold the car assemblies together. During this process a few modifications were considered for the old gal. It was discovered that the front brakes could be easily converted to TR4A disc brakes without any problem and we decided not to put back the 38hp flat head four but instead install a 1300 Spit- fire Engine, keeping the original transmission and other running gear. The trafficators (side mounted up swinging arms) were to remain operational however the trick was to add a flashing sig- nal to the front and rear of the car. A small third brake light was to be installed up in the rear win- dow as well as an additional safety item. A wooden serving tray usually installed in a Rolls Royce was to be mounted into the rear of the drivers’ seat, upscale luxury.

Work was progressing and through the fall of 2009 the body tub was blasted, primed and all the internal body paint applied. A wonderful work crew arrived to mount the new Spitfire engine.

Barrie attaching the transmission Keith, Larry, Barrie, Bob, and Adrian

Over the next couple of weeks the suspension and steering linkage was installed which finally gave us a rolling car. Although it was not running yet, it came time to have the body paint applied. A

weekend morning was selected and my son and I pushed the car a mile and a half down our main

This is where Linda stepped up to the plate and selected the exterior colors and worked with Ronnie at Trim Up to coordinate the interior. Seats were to go back in leather as originally in- stalled. By February of 2010 the Mayflower was back home and now the crunch was on to meet the Van Dusen Show deadline in May. The girls began to plan period 50’s outfits and have a pic- nic in the park - more pressure!. The muffler and tail pipe went on the Wednesday just before the

big field meet and the safety inspection com- pleted. A quick run through Air Care, (failed idle) and insurance obtained.

Well we made it. Linda drove the Lady May to the show and experienced shifting three on the tree. The girls looked fabulous and CNN came over to do an interview then invited them for a second interview at a picnic canopy where a butler served some bubbly. The Lady May received a lot of attention and took first in the Triumph Sa-

10 BC Triumph Registry - June 2010 RX Autoworks Tour - April 11, 2010

The Mini Club invited our club to join them for a tour of Rx Autoworks. Some of the group met for breakfast with Rob Fram, one of the co-owners of this auto restoration company. Our club had eighth members on this tour. There was a Messerschmitt which appeared in good shape and was at the beginning of the restoration process. It is a three wheel vehi- cle built in German and is capable of carrying two adults. There were two 1938 Lagonda V12 Rapide that were being restored. One was going to be ready for Pebble Beach this year and the other will be completed for the following season in 2011. It apparently takes from 3000 to 5000 hours to com- plete one of these restorations. One had the fenders painted and the car was close to being assembled. The other had the body and frame completed. The body will re- quire hundreds of hours of polishing prior to be fully re- stored.

Rob Fram with 1933 Alfa Romeo

There was a 1933 Alfa Romeo which had its frame and body in partial completion. This vehicle was powered by a 1750 cc straight six. This classic vehicle was in the early stages of restoration and was one of a handful of cars built at Alfa Ro- meo of Paris. This vehicle apparently raced at LeMans in 1935 and placed sixth overall. There was a Jag XK120 on a hoist which was in for a body restoration. Apparently, for this vehicle the owner was completing the mechanical work him- 1938 3 Wheeled Messerscmidt Lagonda Rapide

self. It was great to hear the enthusiasm of Rob when he spoke about the various restorations which this company has completed. Again we thank the Mini Club for this invita- tion. Jaguar XK120

12 BC Triumph Registry - June 2010 Fire Fit Competition - Coquitlam - May 15, 2010

Sat. May 15 a small group of us club members showed up in response to Dales’ request to have some cars be on display at the Coquitlam Fire Fit Competition. It was a wonderful hot day with plenty of sunshine (one of the very few in May).

Dave Rogers, John Hunt , Barrie and Jeannette Puffer, Keith Sparkes, and myself and Linda joined Dales TR7 to watch male and female firefighters from various municipalities around BC and the United States compete in this fitness stamina event. Contestants competed against the clock to obtain their best time in the challenge course by first lifting a 45lb hose bundle on their shoulder then run up three flights of stairs, then pull up a 40 lb hose reel outside the three floors of scaffolding, then run back down the stairs to stand on a carriage which is moved by striking it with a mallet to a pre set travel mark, then run down a long course to grab a charged 300 lb hose line which they must extend and then open the nozzle to knock down a small target then the last task is to pick up a 175 lb training dummy and drag it the full length of the course to the finish line. All this is done in turn-out gear and wearing a face mask using a scott air pac.

The best times in the day were recorded in under 2 min with some competitor breaking the world re- cord. Interesting day and the burgers were great.

Did you ever own this 1976 TR6 - CF54309U- Hello fellow Triumph enthusiasts. I'm asking for help in pulling together the ownership lineage and history on my 1976 TR6. The Commission number is CF54309U and it's colour was Pimento Red (72) with a black interior (Trim 11). My BMIHT Certificate tells me the car's build date was March 10, 1976 and it was shipped to Motors Canada Limited, Halifax on the ves- sel "Tosca" in May 1976. I think it was later shipped to BC for sale as a new car. I bought it in BC in 2008 and have been able to trace ownership back to 1991 with the help of previous owner Doug Chinnery who had the car for 15 years. I've love to hear from an owner or someone who knew the car and of course, to know where the car was sold new. Thank you.Ken Shaddock, Ontario, Canada email: [email protected]

Did you ever own this TR3a? TS/39825-L - It was built in England on Nov. 24, 1958 and shipped from the factory on Dec. 10 to Standard Motors on Seymour St. in Vancouver. Based on the fact that the front of the right chassis rail was crushed and filled with dirt & grass I assume it was rallied for the summer of 1959 before being sold to a UBC student from whom I purchased it in early January 1960. The car was originally red w/ black interior until it was retired in 1972. It languished in storage for 28 years until I could finally restore it in 2000. The chassis # is TS/39825-L, the engine # is TS/40508-E and the body # is 1014838. Contact me and I'll phone you to discuss.
