We found it at Pinnaroo in the back block of Ranco Motors and bought it from Bert Bailey. Aer the family restoraon we had it ready for the 1984 Bay to Birdwood. It has done many more since, many Kerneweek Lowenders and quite a few weddings for family and friends. It has been a source of enjoyment and learning and a great sense of pride. — Ray Tully.

To the Editor, I was interested in the photo of the VW on page 8 of our recent Club magazine. On researching my books on the history of the VW, I came across the aached photo. The first ‘Beetle shape’ was developed and tested in 1937 and is quite different from the one shown in our magazine e.g. suicide doors, the set up headlights and the bonnet opening from about half-way up and no bumper bars. I have included this photo of an NSU prototype designed by Ferdinand Porsche and built in 1933. Work on this was disconnued at the insistence of Zundapp, as NSU and Zundapp had an agreement to only build motorcycles. As can be seen, this vehicle has some VW Beetle characteriscs. Bob Kay

6 VISITING RICHMONDS nd 22 JULY 2019 Richmonds can be best described as a car museum where most of the exhibits are for sale. Our GVVCVC members all arrived at Richmonds and there was ample parking for our cars, including 2 older cars – both Dodge Phoenix models. The red 1964 model was on its 1st Club Run and belongs to Ray Tully’s parents who both aended the Run. We were greeted with a sign “Welcome to Richmonds” with our Club logo, then Lyn – ably assisted by Anne and Lorraine – provided a sumptuous morning tea with lots of cake. Members were then introduced to Richmond’s Manager, Sco ABOVE: Morning tea with Ann, Lorraine and Lyn. Bellchambers, who welcomed us and explained the operaons of BELOW: The Dodge Brothers. He then showed us the customer vehicle storage units, the car detailing area, then the huge workshop where cars are repaired and prepared prior to sale. The complex covers 4000 sq.m. and we were guided back to the enormous showroom where we were free to explore all the very desirable cars on display. There were cars to suit all tastes, from the most c makes, many classic sports cars and some family marques that we all grew up with. We enjoyed the opportunity to freely explore the treasures on display and I am sure most of us would be very happy to add 1 or 2 as special addions to our sheds. We assembled as a group, thanked our hosts Sco and Andy, then proceeded to the Rose and Crown for a very enjoyable lunch. My thanks to all who shared this most interesng Run to Richmonds.

Sunday, 22nd September

The forecast of rain did not eventuate and the day was sunny, calm and cloudy at mes. Saturday was set-up day and a good response from Club members assembled at 1.00 p.m. to mark the oval, erect signs, put out bins and collect money from the many sellers who arrived early. The Club barbecue was set up for those volunteers and sellers looking for an evening snack. Heavy cloud and the threat of rain did not deter the early risers on Sunday morning. Everything ran very smoothly with the gates opening early to let in a steady stream of eager buyers. The number of sellers was down a lile due to the forecast, with an esmated 4000 buyers coming through the gate. A new feature this year was a ‘Show ‘n Shine’ which aracted 36 vehicles. The winner came from Whyalla (1969 Monaro). From comments, this will grow for next year. Thank you to all our Club volunteers – vehicle parking, buyers gate, sellers gate, barbecue – all manned on 2-hour shis. It’s fun, plenty of banter and you get free breakfast – so, if you haven’t helped at previous Swap Meets, put your name down for next year. Some of our 70+ age are slowing down and looking to pass on the

baton. Thank you to Yvonne, our Co-ordinator, for managing a smooth event and to Bronwyn (our Treasurer), who handled all the finance for the first me. All in all, it was a great event, on par with last year, which again places our Swap Meet as the premier event on the calendar.

8 GLEN EWIN ESTATE th SPARROW RUN 8 SEPTEMBER 33 members braved the cool early start to aend the September Breakfast run which was a mystery run to the Glen Ewin Estate at Lower Hermitage. With cool, overcast skies and rain threatening we le Princes Park at 8.30 a.m. and travelled through some picturesque traffic-free (excepng for a group of bike riders) countryside, where we could enjoy the pleasure of our vehicles even though some of us used moderns. We travelled through Humbug Scrub lined with wale in full bloom and through the Classic Adelaide Rally Stage of Snake Gully and Upper Hermitage to our desnaon, the historic Glen Ewin Jam Factory. As this heritage-listed venue, now owned and operated by the Wauchope family, has many funcon areas catering for huge, medium and small events, breakfasts and lunches (all indoor and/or outdoor), as well as wine tasng, we were not quite sure what to expect. Our breakfast was in the ‘Gatehouse’ and was a set gourmet egg and bacon with fig toast followed by a fruit plaer, which was very enjoyable. As a lover of fig jam, Ron asked for a jar, but ALAS, it is out of stock and out of season. It was also stated that the original Glen Ewin jam n was a favourite for mending many an exhaust system. Aer brekkie, Willa Wauchope gave us a talk on the history of the jam factory and the early motor sport history of the first Hill Climbs held there in the early 1950s. By chance a Championship trophy has been re-gained by the owners at a garage sale. Future re-enactment events are in the discussion stage We were then shown part of the track and the vehicles in one of the enormous old sheds. A great collecon of vehicles, concentrang on Lotus models, some modified for compeon use. Many stayed at the funcon area for more coffee and to check out the wine labels on offer – one of the Trevors was seen leaving with a bole of Fig Gin. Hide it from Ron! On leaving, a well-known Mercedes owner discovered a flat baery – this may have been due to the lights being le on. Jumper leads were sourced and Carol’s Hyundai came to the rescue. Thanks to Willa Wauchope and staff for the enjoyable breakfast and to Willa and his father Bill for the tour, alllowing us to view the vehicles (a rare privilege, I believe) and a big thank you to David Prest for arranging this inclusive visit.
