“KNOWING IS SEEING”: THE DIGITAL AUDIO WORKSTATION AND THE VISUALIZATION OF SOUND IAN MACCHIUSI A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY GRADUATE PROGRAM IN MUSIC YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO September 2017 © Ian Macchiusi, 2017 ii Abstract The computer’s visual representation of sound has revolutionized the creation of music through the interface of the Digital Audio Workstation software (DAW). With the rise of DAW- based composition in popular music styles, many artists’ sole experience of musical creation is through the computer screen. I assert that the particular sonic visualizations of the DAW propagate certain assumptions about music, influencing aesthetics and adding new visually- based parameters to the creative process. I believe many of these new parameters are greatly indebted to the visual structures, interactional dictates and standardizations (such as the office metaphor depicted by operating systems such as Apple’s OS and Microsoft’s Windows) of the Graphical User Interface (GUI). Whether manipulating text, video or audio, a user’s interaction with the GUI is usually structured in the same manner—clicking on windows, icons and menus with a mouse-driven cursor. Focussing on the dialogs from the Reddit communities of Making hip-hop and EDM production, DAW user manuals, as well as interface design guidebooks, this dissertation will address the ways these visualizations and methods of working affect the workflow, composition style and musical conceptions of DAW-based producers. iii Dedication To Ba, Dadas and Mary, for all your love and support. iv Table of Contents Abstract ..................................................................................................................

  • Jam Factory Statement
The new Jam Factory: a new district to drive the local economy. The Jam Factory centre in Chapel Street is set to become a new district in the heart of South Yarra as part of a comprehensive proposal to redevelop and revitalise the site. Subject to planning approval, the site will be opened up with a network of laneways and a vibrant public realm. A major economic catalyst, the Jam Factory will be a destination that resonates with the community and drives the local economy. The plans, lodged with the City of Stonnington by Newmark Capital, will see the new Jam Factory become a world-class office, entertainment, dining, retail, and cultural district, setting a new standard in sophisticated mixed use development. Newmark Joint Managing Directors Chris Langford and Simon T. Morris said that the proposal is the first step towards realising the company’s vision for the area. “As long-term locals ourselves, our desire is to restore the status of the Jam Factory and Chapel Street, with authenticity, creativity, and community at its core,” Mr Langford said. “Our vision is to revitalise the Jam Factory, while respecting and celebrating its rich character and history. “This site will be a district that encompasses the needs of the whole community. It will be a permeable district in the heart of Melbourne’s most desirable location. “One of the ways we are opening up the site is by reinstating the laneways that originally ran through the Jam Factory, similar to that when the site was occupied by the Red Cross Preserving Company.

TUC Collections, London Metropolitan Courtesy of the Necessity and Rage: the Factory Women’s Strikes in Bermondsey, 1911 by Ursula de la Mare In 1935 George Dangerfield, looking back at the industrial crisis of 1911, described the Bermondsey factory women’s strikes as encapsulating the essence of that summer’s turbulence: The story of the Bermondsey women seems almost to have isolated – with its mingling elements of unreason and necessity and gaiety and rage – the various spirit of the whole Unrest. One stifling August morning, while the [transport workers’] strike was at its height, the women workers in a large confectionery factory, in the middle of Bermondsey, in the ‘black patch of London’,1 suddenly left work. As they went through the streets, shouting and singing, other women left their factories and workshops and came pouring out to join them ...The women were underpaid and overcrowded ...Yet they were oddly light-hearted, too. Many of them, dressed in all their finery, defied the phenomenal temperature with feather boas and fur tippets, as though their strike were some holiday of the soul, long overdue.2 Dangerfield was commenting on strikes that took place in the south-east London borough of Bermondsey in August 1911, when industrial action by dockers was also going on along the Bermondsey and Rotherhithe riverside.

  • The Jam Factory) by Vicki Walker the Smith Family Moved to Stonehouse in the Early 1800S
The Severn Valley Fruit Company (The Jam Factory) by Vicki Walker The Smith family moved to Stonehouse in the early 1800s. Frederick Smith set up a grocery and bakery business in the High Street where Broomhall’s butcher’s shop is now located. By 1861 his nephew Richard had taken over the bakery. It seems that he demolished the original shop and buildings and, in 1877, built the houses and shops that are still on the site. His property extended west behind the street as far as the school. When Richard Smith retired in 1890, he persuaded his son, Charles Lister Smith, to give up his job as a draper’s clerk in London and return to Stonehouse to take over the baking business. Charles saw the potential for creating a new business using the surplus fruit from local orchards. As early as 1903 C.L. Smith is recorded as “exhibiting specimen jars of Severn Valley Fruits” at Stonehouse Flower Show and his new company Severn Valley Fruit Company (SVF Co.) was set up in around 1906. The new factory, which made jams and bottled fruit, was located off High Street behind the shops. Smith was running both businesses side by side. The bakery business retained the name of Richard Smith & Sons long after Richard died in 1901. Arthur Johnson was also a baker in High Street and eventually C.L. Smith sold his bakery to Johnson and concentrated on the SVF Co. Charles Lister Smith had four children. His eldest son, Herbert had been born in 1886 in London.

  • Exeter-Matters
THE TERMLY E-NEWSLETTER FOR EXONIANS MICHAELMAS TERM 2012 Welcome... to the latest edition of Exeter Matters, the termly electronic newsletter for Exonians. RECTOR’S NEWS At this time in the term, we race from one celebration to the next. In 7th Week, there was Thanksgiving. We ate quantities of turkey and strange concoctions such as sweet potatoes with marshmallows which the Williams students assured us were their favourite Thanksgiving food. Then we cleared the Hall to dance to the music of the Ozarks. Three days later, it was FRANCES CAIRNCROSS the College’s Advent Carol Service and Christmas Dinner: more turkey, this time embellished with carols from our wonderful choir. The following Friday was the Christmas service: more choir, more carols, more mince pies. All this festivity has had a bittersweet quality this year because one of our most popular students was killed in a traffic accident in mid-term: Dana Singh, a third-year lawyer, who had been one of the leading lights of the JCR ever since she arrived. We commemorated her with a moving gathering in the Chapel, which was packed with flowers, candles and sorrowing students and Fellows, as well as her courageous family. VANDANA SINGH We seem to have had more than our fair share of student tragedies in my time at Exeter, and I hope our run of sadness is now at an end. One of the joys of the term was a talk by Philip Pullman on his latest book, Grimm Tales. He packed the Sheldonian for one of our 700th Anniversary lectures, at which he was introduced by Jeri Johnson, our senior Fellow in English, and described the difference between a fairy tale and a novel.

  • The Hartley's Jam Factory
Bermondsey Street Back Stories Number 13: Jam Yesterday – Hartley’s in Bermondsey by Jennie Howells September 2020 The London works of Hartley’s The Jam Factory Chimney As Bermondsey has changed over the years, factories, workshops and warehouses have given way to offices, restaurants and smart apartment blocks. But one sight has greeted residents and newcomers for over a century. It is a high chimney stack that proclaims in bold white lettering, ‘HARTLEYS’. This is the story of Hartley’s jams and preserves – but also of the remarkable Sir William Pickles Hartley. Sir William Hartley – Lancashire-born He was born in 1846 in Colne Lancashire. An early photograph shows a young man of determination and ambition, but he was more than this. He was a staunch Primitive Methodist both in views and behaviour. A lifelong philanthropist and generous contributor to many causes, he made an early decision to devote 10% of his gross income to humanitarian work. This amount was to increase as years went on. Amongst many other initiatives, he funded a cottage hospital, a model village, retirement homes for his workers, a botanical laboratory and a Methodist training college. William Hartley, aged 14 The successful Sir William Hartley A career in jam William left school at the age of 14 and began work in his mother’s grocery shop. He started his commercial career at the age of 16 when he opened his own business in grocers’ sundries. This quickly became successful until deliveries of jam from a local supplier became unreliable. When orders failed to arrive, with characteristic enterprise he began to produce his own preserves.
