    New and Lesser Known Works for Saxophone Quartet: A Recording, Performance Guide, and Composer Interviews by Woodrow Chenoweth A Research Paper Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Musical Arts Approved April 2019 by the Graduate Supervisory Committee: Christopher Creviston, Chair Joshua Gardner Michael Kocour Ted Solis ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY May 2019 ABSTRACT This project includes composer biographies, program notes, performance guides, composer questionnaires, and recordings of five new and lesser known works for saxophone quartet. Three of the compositions are new pieces commissioned by Woody Chenoweth for the Midwest-based saxophone quartet, The Shredtet. The other two pieces include a newer work for saxophone quartet never recorded in its final version, as well as an unpublished arrangement of a progressive rock masterpiece. The members of The Shredtet include saxophonists Woody Chenoweth, Jonathan Brink, Samuel Lana, and Austin Atkinson. The principal component of this project is a recording of each work, featuring the author and The Shredtet. The first piece, Sax Quartet No. 2 (2018), was commissioned for The Shredtet and written by Frank Nawrot (b. 1989). The second piece, also commissioned for The Shredtet, was written by Dan Puccio (b. 1980) and titled, Scherzos for Saxophone Quartet (2018). The third original work for The Shredtet, Rhythm and Tone Study No. 3 (2018), was composed by Josh Bennett (b. 1982). The fourth piece, Fragments of a Narrative , was written by Ben Stevenson (b. 1979) in 2014 and revised in 2016, and was selected as runner-up in the Donald Sinta Quartet’s 2016 National Composition Competition.

They are images firmly established in the common television consciousness of most Americans: Lucy and Ethel stuffing chocolates in their mouths and clothing as they fall hopelessly behind at a confectionary conveyor belt, a sunburned Lucy trying to model a tweed suit, Lucy getting soused on Vitameatavegemin on live television—classic slapstick moments. But what was I Love Lucy about? It was about Lucy trying to “get in the show,” meaning her husband’s nightclub act in the first instance, and, in a pinch, anything else even remotely resembling show business. In The Dick Van Dyke Show, Rob Petrie is also in show business, and though his wife, Laura, shows no real desire to “get in the show,” Mary Tyler Moore is given ample opportunity to display her not-insignificant talent for singing and dancing—as are the other cast members—usually in the Petries’ living room. The idealized family home is transformed into, or rather revealed to be, a space of display and performance. 2. These shows, two of the most enduring situation comedies (“sitcoms”) in American television history, feature musical numbers in many episodes. The musical number in television situation comedy is a perhaps surprisingly prevalent phenomenon. In her introduction to genre studies, Jane Feuer uses the example of Indians in Westerns as the sort of surface element that might belong to a genre, even though not every example of the genre might exhibit that element: not every Western has Indians, but Indians are still paradigmatic of the genre (Feuer, “Genre Study” 139).

Between 2011 and 2012, the number of physicians that would not choose a career in medicine if given the opportunity to decide again increased by 15% (Adams). This discontentment has major repercussions in the midst of the rising need for physicians: it is estimated that by 2025, there will be a physician deficit of 90,000 (Bernstein). One reason for the increasing dissatisfaction is burnout, which physician Richard Gunderman defines as “emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and a diminished sense of accomplishment.” Although Gunderman identifies the etiology of dissatisfaction, he fails to characterize burnout and explain where and why this phenomenon occurs. In this paper, I use Raymond Williams’ theory on “structures of feeling” as a lens to identify the characteristics and etiology of burnout.

As we begin a new year, we also celebrate the phenomenal successes of 2016. Last year, the Globe broke box office records with hits like Meteor Shower (another Steve Martin comedy) and our acclaimed productions of October Sky and Sense and Sensibility. It was also an outstanding year for philanthropy. Individual donors gave generously to support our mission, and the Globe reaped the benefit of major foundation and government support. Our Arts Engagement Department successfully launched a slate of new programs funded in part by The James Irvine Foundation’s New California Arts Fund, and the National Endowment for the Arts awarded the Globe a major grant to support new play development. In every way, 2016 was a banner year for The Old Globe. We couldn’t imagine a better way to start 2017 than Picasso at the Lapin Agile. Not only does the production mark the welcome return of writer Steve Martin to the Globe, it pairs him with his longtime collaborator—and our Erna Finci Viterbi Artistic Director—Barry Edelstein. Here, Barry shepherds an all-star cast featuring returning Globe favorites alongside talented performers making their Globe debuts. 2016 will be a tough act to top, but this show bodes well for another banner year of great theatre in Balboa Park. We hope to see you often at the Globe in the coming year!
