  • Welcome to Picasso at the Lapin Agile! We're Thrilled to Kick Off 2017 With
FEBRUARY 2017 WELCOME JIM COX elcome to Picasso at the Lapin Agile! We’re thrilled to kick off 2017 with this funny, fascinating, and endlessly W surprising play. As we begin a new year, we also celebrate the phenomenal successes of 2016. Last year, the Globe broke box office records with hits like Meteor Shower (another Steve Martin comedy) and our acclaimed productions of October Sky and Sense and Sensibility. It was also an outstanding year for philanthropy. Individual donors gave generously to support our mission, and the Globe reaped the benefit of major foundation and government support. Our Arts Engagement Department successfully launched a slate of new programs funded in part by The James Irvine Foundation’s New California Arts Fund, and the National Endowment for the Arts awarded the Globe a major grant to support new play development. In every way, 2016 was a banner year for The Old Globe. We couldn’t imagine a better way to start 2017 than Picasso at the Lapin Agile. Not only does the production mark the welcome return of writer Steve Martin to the Globe, it pairs him with his longtime collaborator—and our Erna Finci Viterbi Artistic Director—Barry Edelstein. Here, Barry shepherds an all-star cast featuring returning Globe favorites alongside talented performers making their Globe debuts. 2016 will be a tough act to top, but this show bodes well for another banner year of great theatre in Balboa Park. We hope to see you often at the Globe in the coming year! MISSION STATEMENT The mission of The Old Globe is to preserve, strengthen, and advance American theatre by: creating theatrical experiences of the highest professional standards; producing and presenting works of exceptional merit, designed to reach current and future audiences; ensuring diversity and balance in programming; providing an environment for the growth and education of theatre professionals, audiences, and the community at large.

Rich2 1Department of Languages, Literature and Philosophy, Armstrong Atlantic State University, Savannah, USA 2Department of Health Sciences, Armstrong Atlantic State University, Savannah, USA Email: [email protected] Received February 1st, 2013; revised March 2nd, 2013; accepted March 10th, 2013 Whether America has realized President Herbert Hoover’s 20th-century vision of a “chicken in every pot”, there is a television in nearly every home. Powerful and accessible, television programs, whether explic- itly, convey values and messages to viewers and, thus, can play a role in reifying the status quo or affect- ing social change. Given comedy programming’s roots in radio and Vaudeville, it is no surprise that a re- current theme in situational comedies is the “war between the sexes”. Despite a surfeit of studies ex- amining specific programs, however, there exists no comprehensive project exploring how gender depic- tions have changed since television’s proliferation in post-WWII America. This time span is especially important because it is bisected by second wave feminism. Regarding gender, TV shows need not fortify traditional ideals. But how far has television come? Findings from a pilot study employing a Grounded Theory analysis of selected US sitcoms from 1952 to 2004 suggest that, regardless of the progressive na- ture of some programming, the most-watched sitcoms reaffirm mainstream stereotypes of women.

Scrubs(series) - The Free Online Dictionary and Encyclopedia (TFODE) 11/21/13 7:56 AM Scrubs(series) - 2 results found: Wikipedia, twitter Pronunciation - English Wikipedia Scrubs (TV series) From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (Redirected from Scrubs(series)) Scrubs is an American medical comedy-drama television series created by Bill Lawrence that aired from October 2, 2001 to March 17, 2010 on NBC and later ABC. The series follows the lives of employees at the fictional Sacred Heart teaching hospital. The title is a play on surgical scrubs and a term for a low-ranking person because at the beginning of the series, most of the main characters were medical interns. The series features fast-paced screenplay, slapstick, and surreal vignettes presented mostly as the daydreams of the central character, Dr. John "J.D." Dorian, who is played by Zach Braff. Actors starring alongside Braff in the first eight seasons included Sarah Chalke Donald Faison, Neil Flynn, Ken Jenkins, John C. McGinley, and Judy Reyes. The series has also featured multiple guest appearances by film actors, such as Brendan Fraser, Heather Graham, and Colin Farrell. In the ninth season, many new cast members were introduced and the show setting moved from a hospital to a medical school. Out of the original cast, only Braff, Faison and McGinley became regular cast members while the others, with the exception of Reyes, made guest appearances. Braff appeared in six episodes of the ninth season before departing. Kerry Bishé, Eliza Coupe, Dave Franco, and Mosley became series regulars with Bishé becoming the show's new narrator.

  • Tv Medical Dramas: Health Care As Soap Opera
TV MEDICAL DRAMAS: HEALTH CARE AS SOAP OPERA LESLEY HENDERSON ‘Medicine is drama, doctors are human, and patients are trouble or troubled’.1 he medical drama occupies an extraordinary position in contemporary Ttelevision. The format attracts multiple awards (ER became the most nominated series in TV history, earning 122 Emmy nominations and 22 Awards) and breaks new ground in television aesthetics (St Elsewhere popularised pedeconferencing – the ‘walk and talk’ tracking shot to signify the supposedly frenetic pace of hospital life). The genre is economically important, too, as medical dramas consistently attract large audiences with ‘gold dust’ demographics for advertisers – the notoriously elusive 18-49 years. These programmes deliver high drama but also convey important messages about health and illness, often highlighting political issues which are neglected in television news and documentary formats. Thus the humanitarian crisis in the Darfur region of Sudan – underreported by the US news media – was brought to ER viewers through characters Dr John Carter and Dr Gregory Pratt, who were depicted working in a refugee camp trying to protect their patients from the Janjaweed militia (series 12, 2006). As these fictional scenes were being transmitted to global audiences, George Clooney – formerly ER’s Dr Doug Ross – spoke out at public rallies to stimulate support for American intervention in Darfur, thus blurring the lines between drama and the material world still further.2 Shows such as House MD are dissected in meticulous detail by fans and medical professionals on websites filled with endless analysis of the plausibility of plot and procedure.3 The medical drama is a commercial product that not only reflects our socio-cultural and economic environment but also illuminates wider changes in broadcasting culture.

McDaniel Professor of Media Arts and Studies Gregory J. Shepherd Dean, Scripps College of Communication ii ABSTRACT BUTCHER, ERICA, Ph.D., August 2009, Mass Communication An Audience Reception Analysis Field Study: Exploring Second and Later Generation Latino Viewers’ Perceived Realism Appraisals of Latino Fictional Television Characters in English Language Television Programs (225 pp.) Director of Dissertation: Drew O. McDaniel This qualitative audience reception analysis explored the cultural believability of fictional portrayals of Latinos in English-language television programs. The informants for this study were predominately second and third generation Mexican Americans, living in the Los Angeles, California area. This research focused on the ways these Latino viewers experienced, interacted with, and assigned meaning to Latino television characterizations. Because these activities do not occur in isolation particular attention was given to the social construction and negotiation of meanings. Reception typically occurs and is discussed in informal settings, so the researcher employed the naturalistic methods of guided conversations and participant observation.
