Italian foreign policy in the Second Republic: new wine in old bottles? https://www.e-ir.info/2009/10/15/italian-foreign-policy-in-the-second-republic-new-wine-in-old-bottles/ LUCA RATTI, OCT 15 2009 Revelations about the alleged payment by Italian troops of protection money to local Afghan commanders to stop attacks on their forces have reignited a recurrent debate among scholars of international affairs: does Italy have a coherent foreign policy, or even a foreign policy at all? While Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has warned that the remarks of part of the foreign press are damaging Italy’s reputation, in recent weeks Italian policy-makers and public opinion have paid tribute to the Italian soldiers fallen in an Afghan bomb attack on 17 September 2009, portraying them as ‘heroes’ and ‘missionaries of peace’, in a rare spirit of bipartisan unity among the Italian political forces. Whereas following the suicide bombing that in November 2003 had killed 19 Italian soldiers in the city of Nasiriyah in southern Iraq – the highest loss suffered by the Italian armed forces since the end of World War II – part of the centre- left opposition had demanded the immediate withdrawal of the Italian contingent, on this occasion no major voices have been raised against Italy’s Afghan presence.

  • 1 the Italian Decision of Joining The
The Italian decision of joining the EMS: Exchange rate commitment as a political argument in favour of institutional reforms* Anna Solé University Pompeu Fabra May, 7th, 2018 Abstract: During the negotiations about the European Monetary System (EMS), the Italian government consistently held the position that Italy was not going to join a “re-edited Snake”. However, when it became clear that the EMS would work under the hegemony of the German mark, just as the previous system did, the Italian government surprisingly changed position and decided to adhere to the new monetary arrangement, although this decision imposed unpopular reforms and threatened with provoking a government crisis. The debate on the convenience for Italy of participating in the EMS shows that besides the discussion on the new monetary system, other important discussions, concerning institutional reforms, were also taking place. In many occasions, EMS membership was used to justify the need for other institutional reforms that did not enjoy enough political support to be implemented. In particular, the reform of the wage indexation mechanism and the change in the status of the Banca d’Italia are examples of how the exchange rate commitment and the European compromises were used to impose measures that were very unpopular and, otherwise, would have been very difficult to carry out. Introduction: On the 5th of December 1978, the agreement of the European Monetary System (EMS) was signed by six of the nine members of the EEC. The United Kingdom decided to stay out, whereas Italy and Ireland were given some additional time to take their final decision.

BILA Annual Dinner – 25 January 2019 The kidnapping and assassination of Aldo Moro Avv. Antonio Distaso1 1. Introduction Mr. President Roy Campbell, Mr Diego Solinas, in representation of the Consulate General of Italy, Mr. Vice President of the Law Society Simon Davis, Kind members and guests, Ladies and Gentlemen, I‘m very grateful to the British Italian Law Association for the opportunity given to me this evening, in particular for the possibility to address such a qualified audience and, above all, to be able to talk about a subject to which I feel particularly attached, both because of my personal history and also for the commitment that I have dedicated during most of the ten years of my parliamentary experience at the Chamber of Deputies of Italy. I would also like to extend a special thanks to my Dear Friend and Colleague, Ugo Palazzo, for the esteem, which I reciprocate, and confidence that he has placed in me. I sincerely hope I am up to the task. I hope so, sincerely for you too, Dear Ugo! The political history and the personal story of Aldo Moro, I think are fundamental for those who want to understand and deepen the political dynamics of Italian history, from the period following the second world war and for about half a century later. Born in Maglie (Lecce) in 1916, a university professor, member of the Constituent Assembly, Minister, Secretary of the Christian Democracy party and Prime Minister, Aldo Moro, equal only to Alcide de Gasperi, was, in my view, one of the very few Italian statesmen of the past century.
