Hanna Marie Resvoll-Holmsen: a Pioneer in Svalbard
This year is a kind of anniversary for the Norwegian Polar Institute: its establishment can be traced back to Svalbard expeditions sponsored by Prince Albert I of Monaco in 1906 and 1907. In this unreviewed biographi- cal article, biologist Eva Fuglei, who has spent many sea- sons on Spitsbergen (where her research has focused on Arctic foxes), and the editor describe part of the uncom- mon life of botanist Hanna Marie Resvoll-Holmsen, who participated in the 1907 expedition. Hanna Marie Resvoll-Holmsen: a pioneer in Svalbard Eva Fuglei & Helle V. Goldman Norwegian Polar Institute, Polar Environmental Centre, NO-9296 Tromsø, Norway, [email protected]. In 1906 and 1907, a small group of Norwegian scientists participated in expeditions to the Svalbard archipelago organized and paid for by Prince Albert I of Monaco. Botanist Hanna Marie Resvoll-Holmsen—the fi rst woman to carry out botanical research in Svalbard—went along on the 1907 expedition, returning the next year to continue her studies. Who was this woman? On 11 September 1873, Julie Marie and Hans Resvoll had a daughter whom they named Hanna Marie. The couple’s other daughter, Thekla, was older by two years. Thekla and Hanna would always be close friends and important sources of mutual support. They became interested in many of the same things, excelled in similar careers and even ended up marrying brothers. At the time of Hanna’s birth, the Resvolls lived in Vågå, in mountainous southern Norway. Located along an ancient east–west travel route, Vågå derives its name from the old Norwegian word vega, denoting “travel”. -

The British Williams exploration party led by Captain William Smith discovered the northwest coast of the Antarctic Peninsula. The Russian Vostok and Mirnyy expedition led by Thaddeus Thadevich Bellingshausen sighted parts of the continental coast (Dronning Maud Land) without recognizing what they had seen. They discovered Peter I Island in January of 1821. • 1841 James Clark Ross sailed with the Erebus and the Terror through the ice in the Ross Sea, and mapped 900 kilometres of the coast. He discovered Ross Island and Mount Erebus. • 1892-93 Financed by Chr. Christensen from Sandefjord, C. A. Larsen sailed the Jason in search of new whaling grounds. The first fossils in Antarctica were discovered on Seymour Island, and the eastern part of the Antarctic Peninsula was explored to 68° 10’ S. Large stocks of whale were reported in the Antarctic and near South Georgia, and this discovery paved the way for the large-scale whaling industry and activity in the south. -

Williams Copyright by Justin Tyler Peyton 2015 Abstract As ectotherms with high surface area to volume ratio, insects are particularly susceptible to desiccation and low temperature stress. In this dissertation, I examine the molecular underpinnings of two facets of these stresses: rapid cold hardening and cryoprotective dehydration. Rapid cold hardening (RCH) is an insect’s ability to prepare for cold stress when that stress is preceded by an intermediate temperature for minutes to hours. In order to gain a better understanding of cold shock, recovery from cold shock, and RCH in Sarcophaga bullata I examine the transcriptome with microarray and the metabolome with gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GCMS) in response to these treatments. I found that RCH has very little effect on the transcriptome, but results in a shift from aerobic metabolism to glycolysis/gluconeogenesis during RCH and preserved metabolic homeostasis during recovery. In cryoprotective dehydration (CD), a moisture gradient is established between external ice and the moisture in the body of an insect. As temperatures decline, the external ice crystals grow, drawing in more moisture which dehydrates the insect causing its melting point to track the ambient temperature. To gain a better understanding of CD and dehydration in Belgica antarctica I explore the transcriptome with RNA sequencing ii and the metabolome with GCMS. -
Shipping in the Arctic
FACT SHEET CURRENT KNOWLEDGE ON THE THEME: Shipping in the Arctic The consequences of climate change are more clearly 8 felt in the Arctic than in any other region of the world. The particularly strong rise in temperatures in the high 7 latitudes causes a rapid decline in sea ice (Fig. 1) and threatens the existence of highly sensitive ecosystems 6 (see AWI Fact Sheet „Climate Change in the Arctic“). But the dwindling ice is also making regions and sea routes 5 more accessible, which for a long time were reserved for Million km² adventurers, research expeditions and indigenous peo- ples: The Arctic sea routes, connecting the Pacific and 4 Atlantic north of the continents.
