Cropped, as usual, on the neat line, to the right cut about 5mm into the printed area. The imprint is on places somewhat weaker and /or ink has been faded out. One small hole (1,7x1,4cm.) in lower part, inland of Russia. As often, the parchment is wavy, with light water staining, usual staining and surface dust. First state of two. The title and imprint appear in a cartouche, crowned by the printer's mark of Willem Jansz Blaeu [INDEFESSVS AGENDO], at the center of the lower border. Scale cartouches appear in four corners of the chart, and richly decorated coats of arms have been engraved in the interior. The chart is oriented to the west. It shows the seacoasts of Europe from Novaya Zemlya and the Gulf of Sydra in the east, and the Azores and the west coast of Greenland in the west. In the north the chart extends to the northern coast of Spitsbergen, and in the south to the Canary Islands. The eastern part of the Mediterranean id included in the North African interior. The chart is printed on parchment and coloured by a contemporary hand. The colours red and green and blue still present, other colours faded. An intriguing line in green colour, 34 cm long and about 3mm bold is running offshore the Norwegian coast all the way south of Greenland, and closely following Tara Polar Arctic Circle ! Blaeu's chart greatly influenced other Amsterdam publisher's. -
Arctic Environments
Characteristics of an arctic environment and the physical geography of Svalbard - ‘geography explained’ fact sheet The Arctic environment is little studied at Key Stage Three yet it is an excellent basis for an all-encompassing study of place or as a case study to illustrate key concepts within a specific theme. Svalbard, an archipelago lying in the Arctic Ocean north of mainland Europe, about midway between Norway and the North Pole, is a place with an awesome landscape and unique geography that includes issues and themes of global, regional and local importance. A study of Svalbard could allow pupils to broaden and deepen their knowledge and understanding of different aspects of the seven geographical concepts that underpin the revised Geography Key Stage Three Programme of Study. Many pupils will have a mental image of an Arctic landscape, some may have heard of Svalbard. A useful starting point for study is to explore these perceptions using visual prompts and big questions – where is the Arctic/Svalbard? What is it like? What is happening there? Why is it like this? How will it change? Svalbard exemplifies the distinctive physical and human characteristics of the Arctic and yet is also unique amongst Arctic environments. Perceptions and characteristics of the Arctic may be represented in many ways, including art and literature and the pupil’s own geographical imagination of the place. Maps and photographs are vital in helping pupils develop spatial understanding of locations, places and processes and the scale at which they occur. In the present study, we studied a 118-cm-high palaeo-notch sediment profile YN in Ny-Alesund which is divided into three units: upper unit (0–10 cm), middle unit (10–70 cm) and lower unit (70–118 cm). The middle unit contains many gravels and lacks regular lamination, and most of the gravels have striations and extrusion pits on the surface. The middle unit has the grain size characteristics and origin of organic matter distinct from other units, and it is likely the glacial till. The LIA in Svalbard took place between 1500 and 1900 AD, the middle unit is deposited between 2219 yr BP and AD 1900, and thus the middle unit is most likely caused by glacier advance during the LIA. -

The check-lists include 172 species of lichens and 51 species of vascular plants. Several species rare in Svalbard and in the Arctic were discovered: Candelariella borealis was new to Svalbard. 51 lichen species were newly recorded on Nordaustlandet and 131 lichen species were observed in the Duvefjorden area for the first time. Among lichen species rare in Svalbard and in the Arctic the following can be mentioned: Caloplaca magni-filii, C. nivalis, Lecidea silacea, Phaeophyscia nigricans, Polyblastia gothica, Protothelenella sphinctrinoidella, Rinodina conradii, Stenia geophana, and Tetramelas pulverulentus. Two species of vascular plants, Saxifraga svalbardensis and S. hyperborea, were found new to the Duvefjorden area. The investigated flora is represented mostly by species widespread in Svalbard and in the Arctic. Although Duvefjorden area is situated in the northernmost part of Svalbard, its flora is characterized by relatively high diversity of vascular plants and lichens. -
Ortelius's Typus Orbis Terrarum (1570)
Ortelius’s Typus Orbis Terrarum (1570) by Giorgio Mangani (Ancona, Italy) Paper presented at the 18th International Conference for the History of Cartography (Athens, 11-16th July 1999), in the "Theory Session", with Lucia Nuti (University of Pisa), Peter van der Krogt (University of Uthercht), Kess Zandvliet (Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam), presided by Dennis Reinhartz (University of Texas at Arlington). I tried to examine this map according to my recent studies dedicated to Abraham Ortelius,1 trying to verify the deep meaning that it could have in his work of geographer and intellectual, committed in a rather wide religious and political programme. Ortelius was considered, in the scientific and intellectual background of the XVIth century Low Countries, as a model of great morals in fact, he was one of the most famous personalities of Northern Europe; he was a scholar, a collector, a mystic, a publisher, a maps and books dealer and he was endowed with a particular charisma, which seems to have influenced the work of one of the best artist of the time, Pieter Bruegel the Elder. Dealing with the deep meaning of Ortelius’ atlas, I tried some other time to prove that the Theatrum, beyond its function of geographical documentation and succesfull publishing product, aimed at a political and theological project which Ortelius shared with the background of the Familist clandestine sect of Antwerp (the Family of Love). In short, the fundamentals of the familist thought focused on three main points: a) an accentuated sensibility towards a mysticism close to the so called devotio moderna, that is to say an inner spirituality searching for a direct relation with God. -

Fortunately, several populations did do well (38% compared to 34% in 2017). When comparing pelagic and coastal populations, the former were more successful (43% good, 22% poor) than the coastal (33% good, 33% poor). Among the pelagic species, northern gannets and razorbills fared best with a good breeding success recorded in two out of two and three of four populations respectively. Common guillemots also did well with five of eight populations having good breeding success. The three puffin colonies monitored in the Barents Sea produced many chicks while at Røst breeding success was poor for the 12th year in a row. At the two other colonies in the Norwegian Sea, it was moderate. Little auks on Bjørnøya did well, but only moderately so on Spitsbergen. The fulmar’s success on Jan Mayen was good, but poor on Røst and Sklinna. Brünnich’s guillemots had a poor breeding season on Jan Mayen, a good one on Bjørnøya and a moderate one on Spitsbergen.
