Sieg, Ph.D. ABSTRACT ENVIRONMENTAL AND VEGETATIONAL GRADIENTS ON AN ARIZONA PONDEROSA PINE LANDSCAPE: IMPLICATIONS FOR ECOLOGICAL RESTORATION SCOTT R. ABELLA This research was performed in northern Arizona ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) forests to enhance the ecological basis for restoration projects currently ongoing in these forests. My objectives were to: (i) develop a forest ecosystem classification on a 110,000-ha ponderosa pine landscape, (ii) determine geomorphic and soil gradients associated with the distribution of plant communities on this landscape, (iii) assess potential contributions of the soil seed bank for reestablishing understory communities, and (iv) determine understory responses to forest-floor manipulations in an existing ecological restoration experiment. I identified 10 landscape ecosystem types on this landscape, ranging from black cinders/Phacelia ecosystems low in available moisture and total N, to mesic basalt/Festuca and aspen/Lathyrus ecosystems. Distribution of plant communities was chiefly correlated with soil texture and resource levels reflecting influences of parent materials. Soil seed bank composition was partly ecosystem- specific, and was dominated by graminoids and short-lived forbs such as aspen fleabane (Erigeron divergens). I did not detect any short-term (2 year) treatment effects on understory vegetation in the forest-floor manipulation experiment. -

The majority of the recorded plant species were recorded during the summer and autumn of 2006 as part of a botanical inventory at Stewart Meadows. A * to the left of a scientific name indicates a non-native species. A *(?) to the left of the scientific name indicates a species whose non-native status is uncertain. A (??) to the right of the scientific name indicates an educated guess as to the identity of a species. Such species need to be re-collected when flowers and/or fruits are available. SY indicates a scientific name by which a species was known prior to a recent name change. Nomenclature mostly follows Allred (2004). Non-native status was primarily derived from Allred (2004) and Cox (2001). Abstract This study focuses on the cultural-historical environment of the 88,900-acre (35,560-ha) Valles Caldera National Preserve (VCNP) over the past four centuries of Spanish, Mexican, and U.S. governance. It includes a review and synthesis of available published and unpublished historical, ethnohistorical, and ethnographic literature about the human occupation of the area now contained within the VCNP. Documents include historical maps, texts, letters, diaries, business records, photographs, land and mineral patents, and court testimony. This study presents a cultural-historical framework of VCNP land use that will be useful to land managers and researchers in assessing the historical ecology of the property. It provides VCNP administrators and agents the cultural-historical background needed to develop management plans that acknowledge traditional associations with the Preserve, and offers managers additional background for structuring and acting on consultations with affiliated communities. The Authors Kurt F. Anschuetz, an archaeologist and anthropologist, is the Program Director of the RÍo Grande Foundation for Communities and Cultural Landscapes in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He provides educational opportunities and technical assistance to Indian, Hispanic, and Anglo communities working to sustain their traditional relations with the land, the water, and their cultural heritage resources in the face of rapid development. -

A Vegetation Survey and Preliminary Ecological Assessment of Valles Caldera National Preserve, New Mexico 2003 A Vegetation Survey and Preliminary Ecological Assessment of 1 Valles Caldera National Preserve, New Mexico Esteban Muldavin and Phil Tonne __________________________________________________________________________ SUMMARY With the acquisition of the Valles Caldera National Preserve (VCNP) has come the need for comprehensive biological inventories to support sound natural resources management. Fundamental components of this effort are the development of a vegetation map and associated vegetation community classification, and a preliminary assessment of the condition and regional status of these communities. Accordingly, we conducted an initial vegetation survey to help characterize the range of variation and condition among the preserve’s ecosystems and to provide a foundation for the development of a high-resolution vegetation map to be used in planning and management. In 2001, we established 100 vegetation plots in the preserve’s forests and grasslands that have detailed species inventories, site and tree stand characterizations, and repeat photo points. In this first year, sampling was focused on describing reference conditions in stands that had the fewest impacts from past logging and grazing or those with special biological elements. Data from these plots were used to develop a vegetation classification that conforms to the National Vegetation Classification system standards. The classification serves as an organizing tool for information on the preserve’s ecosystems and for defining map units for a vegetation map to be developed in succeeding years. We identified and described 65 plant associations that encompass high elevation sub- alpine forests, down through mixed conifer to open foothill pine woodlands, and from high montane grasslands to valley floor wetlands. -
