Intro 1996 National List of Vascular Plant Species That Occur in Wetlands The Fish and Wildlife Service has prepared a National List of Vascular Plant Species That Occur in Wetlands: 1996 National Summary (1996 National List). The 1996 National List is a draft revision of the National List of Plant Species That Occur in Wetlands: 1988 National Summary (Reed 1988) (1988 National List). The 1996 National List is provided to encourage additional public review and comments on the draft regional wetland indicator assignments. The 1996 National List reflects a significant amount of new information that has become available since 1988 on the wetland affinity of vascular plants. This new information has resulted from the extensive use of the 1988 National List in the field by individuals involved in wetland and other resource inventories, wetland identification and delineation, and wetland research. Interim Regional Interagency Review Panel (Regional Panel) changes in indicator status as well as additions and deletions to the 1988 National List were documented in Regional supplements. The National List was originally developed as an appendix to the Classification of Wetlands and Deepwater Habitats of the United States (Cowardin et al.1979) to aid in the consistent application of this classification system for wetlands in the field.. The 1996 National List also was developed to aid in determining the presence of hydrophytic vegetation in the Clean Water Act Section 404 wetland regulatory program and in the implementation of the swampbuster provisions of the Food Security Act. While not required by law or regulation, the Fish and Wildlife Service is making the 1996 National List available for review and comment. -

DECISION NOTICE/DESIGNATION ORDER Decision Notice Finding of No Significant Impact Designation Order By virtue of the authority vested in me by the Secretary of Agriculture under regulations at 7 CFR 2.42, 36 CFR 251.23, and 36 CFR Part 219, I hereby establish the Osborn Mountain Research Natural Area. It shall be comprised of lands described in the section of the Establishment Record entitled "Location." The Regional Forester has recommended the establishment of this Research Natural Area in the Record of Decision for the Bridger-Teton National Forest Land and Resource Management Plan. That recommendation was the result of analysis of the factors listed in 36 CFR 219.25 and Forest Service Manual 4063.41. Results of the Regional Forester's analysis are documented in the Bridger-Teton National Forest Land and Resource Management Plan and Final Environmental Impact Statement which are available to the public. The Osborn Mountain Research Natural Area will be managed in compliance with all relevant laws, regulations, and Forest Service Manual direction regarding Research Natural Areas. It will be administered in accordance with the management direction/prescription identified in the Establishment Record. I have reviewed the Bridger-Teton Land and Resource Management Plan (LRMP) direction for this RNA and find that the management direction cited in the previous paragraph is consistent with the LRMP and that a Plan amendment is not required. The Forest Supervisor of the Bridger-Teton National Forest shall notify the public of this decision and mail a copy of the Decision Notice/Designation Order and amended direction to all persons on the Bridger-Teton National Forest Land and Resource Management Plan mailing list. -

This document serves as a data dictionary for the existing vegetation, historical vegetation, and potential natural vegetation databases, as described below: • Interpretation of aerial photography acquired in 1995, 1996, and 1997 was used to characterize existing (current) conditions. The 1996 and 1997 photography was obtained after cessation of the Bull and Summit wildfires in order to characterize post-fire conditions. The database name is: 97veg. • Interpretation of late-1930s and early-1940s photography was used to characterize historical conditions. The database name is: 39veg. • The potential natural vegetation was determined for each polygon in the analysis -

GRIEVE United States Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service, United States Salinity Laboratory, 450 West Big Springs Road, Riverside, CA 92507, USA Received: 4 August 1999 Returned for revision: 29 September 1999 Accepted: 8 December 1999 The response of two speciality vegetable crops, New Zealand spinach (Tetragonia tetragonioides Pall.) and red orach (Atriplex hortensis L.), to salt application at three growth stages was investigated. Plants were grown with a base nutrient solution in outdoor sand cultures and salinized at 13 (early), 26 (mid), and 42 (late) d after planting (DAP). For the treatment salt concentrations, we used a salinity composition that would occur in a typical soil in the San Joaquin Valley of California using drainage waters for irrigation. Salinity treatments measuring electrical 1 conductivities (ECi) of 3, 7, 11, 15, 19 and 23 dS m were achieved by adding MgSO4 ,Na2SO4 , NaCl and CaCl2 to the base nutrient solution. These salts were added to the base nutrient solution incrementally over a 5-d period to avoid osmotic shock to the seedlings. The base nutrient solution without added salts served as the non-saline control (3 dS m1). Solution pH was uncontrolled and ranged from 7.7to8.0. Both species were salt sensitive at the early seedling stage and became more salt tolerant as time to salinization increased. -

Norway Dovrefjell Mountains A Greentours Itinerary Day 1 To Trondheim and Oppdal After our evening arrival we’ll drive directly to Oppdal and settle into our very comfortable hotel. Day 2 Gjevillvassdalen Valley We’ll drive to the beautiful Gjevillvassdalen Valley to explore a mountain-farming area and to observe how this type of agriculture affects many species in a positive way. Walking through the subalpine birch forest we’ll soon become familiar with species like Solidago virgaurea, both Melampyrum pratense and Melampyrum sylvaticum, Trientalis europaea, Geum rivale, Cornus suecica, Omalotheca norvegica, Pyrola minor, Frog Orchids, and grasses such as Phleum alpinum and Anthoxanthum odoratum. Family parties of Willow Grouse may wander across the tracks and we can see Bramblings, Fieldfare and Bluethroats in the birch woodland. If the weather is good the deep blue, star-like flowers of Gentiana nivalis will open. Where the soil is moist and rich we can see taller species such as Aconitum septentrionale, Geranium sylvaticum, Cicerbita alpina, Ranunculus platanifolius, Stellaria nemoreum, Angelica archangelica and Myosotis decumbens. On more nutrient-poor soils, heather-like Empetrum nigrum and lichens such as Flavocetraria nivalis and Stereocaulon dominate. Day 3 Orkelsjøen Lake and Unndalen Valley Mountain plateaux around Orkelsjøen Lake offer a different landscape with a low relief – so no steep slopes here!. Here we can get to know plant communities on calcareous soil dominated by Dryas octopetala together with species like red Silene acaulis, the orchids Coeloglossum viride and Pseudorchis straminea, and peas such as Astragalus alpinus and Oxytropis lapponica. Other species we will meet in this plant community are Carex rupestris, Potentilla crantzii, Thalictrum alpinum, Bartia alpina and Bistorta vivipara.
