Outline of angiosperm phylogeny: orders, families, and representative genera with emphasis on Oregon native plants Priscilla Spears December 2013 The following listing gives an introduction to the phylogenetic classification of the flowering plants that has emerged in recent decades, and which is based on nucleic acid sequences as well as morphological and developmental data. This listing emphasizes temperate families of the Northern Hemisphere and is meant as an overview with examples of Oregon native plants. It includes many exotic genera that are grown in Oregon as ornamentals plus other plants of interest worldwide. The genera that are Oregon natives are printed in a blue font. Genera that are exotics are shown in black, however genera in blue may also contain non-native species. Names separated by a slash are alternatives or else the nomenclature is in flux. Currently, little is known about how much folate, and their composition varies in different spinach accessions. The aim of this study was to investigate natural variation in the folate content and composition of spinach genotypes grown under controlled environmental conditions. The folate content and composition in 67 spinach accessions were collected from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Asian Vegetable Research and Development Center (AVRDC) germplasm collections according to their origin, grown under control conditions to screen for natural diversity. Folates were extracted by a monoenzyme treatment and analyzed by a validated liquid chromatography (LC) method. -

Description Description This is a spreading shrub with dark green, sessile, glistening leaves.The sheen is caused by small, shiny, water-storage cells that cover the surface of the leaf. The small, 4-petalled, yellow flowers are situated in groups of 3-5 in the upper leaf axils. They flower from August to November. The fruits are thickly 4-winged. The commercialisation of kōkihi or New Zealand spinach (Tetragonia tetragonioides) in New Zealand N. Roskruge Institute of Natural Resources PN433, Massey University, Private Bag 11-222, Palmerston North 4442, New Zealand Abstract Kōkihi (Tetragonia tetragonioides) is the traditional name applied to the succulent green plant commonly called New Zealand spinach. It is a wild plant which grows in localised pockets along the coasts of both the North and South Islands of New Zealand, Stewart Island and Kermadec Island but it is seldom found naturally in inland areas. Commercially kōkihi is not a widely cultivated crop in New Zealand, however it is relatively common in non-commercial gardens and seed is available in garden centres. Scoping research was undertaken looking at a selection of agronomic factors which apply to this crop in a commercial production system. Kōkihi is susceptible to a minor range of pests and diseases including the fungal diseases Uredo novae-zealandiae (rust) and Helminthosporium sp. (commonly known as silver scurf on potatoes). The relationship of these diseases to other crops will influence the inclusion of NZ spinach in any crop rotation. Management of the plant is otherwise relatively simple and may be well suited to commercial opportunities. Callister Centre for Environmental Management, University of Ballarat, PO Box 663 Ballarat, Victoria 3353, AUSTRALIA Abstract: The vegetation of Peery Lake area, Paroo-Darling National Park (32°18’–32°40’S, 142°10’–142°25’E) in north western New South Wales was assessed using intensive quadrat sampling and mapped using extensive ground truthing and interpretation of aerial photograph and Landsat Thematic Mapper satellite images. 378 species of vascular plants were recorded from this survey from 66 families. Species recorded from previous studies but not noted in the present study have been added to give a total of 424 vascular plant species for the Park including 55 (13%) exotic species. Twenty vegetation communities were identified and mapped, the most widespread being Acacia aneura tall shrubland/tall open-shrubland, Eremophila/Dodonaea/Acacia open shrubland and Maireana pyramidata low open shrubland. One hundred and fifty years of pastoral use has impacted on many of these communities.
