For many artists and fans, folk metal is more than just music: it is a way of revitalising tradition. Folk metal is then a genre which is closely related to individual‟s cultural identities. As part of popular culture, heavy metal has been investigated for instance in the fields of cultural studies and psychology. Andrew Brown investigates how heavy metal emerged as subject for academic research. Deena Weinstein approaches heavy metal as culture and behaviour that is shared by individuals from different cultural backgrounds. However, subgenres like folk metal have not yet been explored in depth by academics. Analysing folk metal‟s nuances in specific national contexts would provide further knowledge on national cultures and identities. One example of folk metal reflecting elements of national culture is Finnish folk metal. The bands whose works belong to this genre usually draw from Finnish culture to compose their works, which usually feature stories from a variety of traditional sources such as the epic book Kalevala. Such stories are then transposed into new media, disseminating the artists‟ concept of Finnishness.

    MARCUS MOBERG Popular Culture and the ‘Darker Side’ of Alternative Spirituality The case of metal music Introduction Recent decades have seen a growing interest in a wide range of alternative religions and spiritualities in the West. This has led to the emergence of an al- ternative spiritual environment that is often referred to as the ‘holistic milieu’ (e.g. Heelas & Woodhead 2005) or, more broadly, ‘the alternative spiritual milieu’ (e.g. Partridge 2004). Commenting on the changing face of religion in the West, scholars such as Christopher Partridge (2004, 2005) argue that contemporary Western society and culture is experiencing a process of ‘re- enchantment’, while Paul Heelas and Linda Woodhead (2005) contend that the West may be experiencing the beginning of a ‘spiritual revolution’ as a re- sult of the overall ‘massive subjective turn’ of Western culture and society. In relation to these debates, scholars of religion have also increasingly started to draw attention to the role played by popular culture within the overall context of religious change and transformation in the West. Popular culture not only reflects these changes but, in turn, also provides important sources of inspir- ation for the transformation of religious and spiritual practices and identities (e.g. Partridge 2004, 2005; Lynch 2006; Forbes 2005). Metal is perhaps the most extreme and aggressive form of contemporary Western popular music. Even though it continues to spark controversy and debate, it has also enjoyed enduring popularity for decades and has spread on a global scale. Metal music and culture has always been characterized by its fascination for dark and austere themes and imagery.

Bevezetőül két mondatba szorítva a mondandóm lényege: szinte minden amerikai egyetemen van antropológiai (és vele közös etnológiai vagy régészeti) tanszék, hozzávaló tankönyvekkel, s megannyi nyugati tudományos érdeklődésirány vezet a kulturális (vagy valamely alkalmazott) antropológia felé – Magyarországon mégsem érdemesül kellő intézményes támogatásra az ant- ropológiai gondolkodásmód és kutatási irány. Pedig az Emberről szóló és korszakosan izgal- mas tudományok egyike ez, a Szellemről és Tudományról lehetséges rálátásoktól sem független törekvés, melynek még ágazatai (példaképp etnopolitikai, multimodális társadalmi kommuni- kációs vagy gender-területi változatai) is kísértően elgondolkodtatóak. Köztük a politika antro- pológia megértésmódjáé is, amely aligha körvonalazható egy rövid vázlatban, de horizontjának tágassága talán megérzékíthető ennyiben is. 2. Kortárs társadalomkutatások vagy forráselemzések, utazók jelentései vagy háborús tudósítá- sok, kulturális országjelentések vagy globalizációs teóriák egyaránt tükrözhetnek és bemutat- hatnak konfliktusos vagy harmonikus állapotokat, amelyek összefüggenek a hatalmi harcokkal és érdekekkel, vagyis politikaiak.
