È Lillian Roxon (1932-1973), giornalista e scrittrice australiana, celebre per la sua Rock Encyclopedia, la prima storia del rock mai scritta, pubblicata nel 1969; il suo sguardo scannerizzò la New York degli anni Sessanta e dei primi Settanta, con personaggi del calibro di Jim Morrison, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Andy Warhol, Bob Dylan, John Lennon, Lou Reed, tra tanti. Con uno stile allegro e ritmato, il regista Paul Clarke racconta la donna che ha strappato il rock all’etichetta di moda passeggera e lo ha consegnato al suo status di rivoluzione dei costumi, di epica generazionale, di spirito di un’epoca. To describe what you’ve read is to try and describe music in writing’ (2005:37). Later in the book, Andreas Fine Licht, a blind Professsor of Eskimo Languages and Cultures at the Danish Institute of Eskimology, deciphers a tape recording of a native Greenlander speaking in dialect about hunting. He is also able to hear and identify in the background on the tape the jazz music of trumpeter Roy Louber, formerly of the John Coltrane quartet, in a rare live concert performance in Thule in the late 1960s (2005:134). The experience of listening to, or hearing and identifying music may, in both cases, be a complex one, but writing about it comprehensively and memorably can be even more complex and fraught with difficulties. This selection of papers comes from a Symposium held at the University of Technology Sydeny (UTS) in September 2009.     ii © Copyright by Jarek Paul Ervin All Rights Reserved May 2017 iii ABSTRACT My dissertation takes a speculative cue from the reception of 1970s New York punk, which is typically treated as both rule – the symbolic site of origin – and exception – a protean moment before the crystallization of punk proper. For this reason, artists such as Velvet Underground, Patti Smith, the Ramones, and Blondie are today afforded the simultaneous status of originators, interlopers, innovators, and successors. This has led both to the genre’s canonicity in the music world and its general neglect within scholarship. I argue that punk ought to be understood less as a set of stylistic precepts (ones that could be originated and then developed), than as a set of philosophical claims about the character of rock music in the 1970s. Punk artists such as Patti Smith, Jayne County, and the Ramones developed an aesthetic theory through sound. This was an act of accounting, which foregrounded the role of historical memory and recast a mode of reflexive imagination as musical practice. At times mournful, at times optimistic about the possibility of reconciliation, punk was a restorative aesthetics, an attempt to forge a new path on memories of rock’s past. My first chapter looks at the relationship between early punk and rock music, its ostensible music parent. Through close readings of writing by important punk critics including Greil Marcus, Lester Bangs, and Ellen Willis – as well as analyses of songs by the Velvet Underground and Suicide – I argue that a historical materialist approach offers a new in-road to old debates about punk’s progressive/regressive musical character.

However, in one recording taken less than six months before her death in 1973 at the age of 41, Roxon gives viewers a taste of the wit that inspired a fellow journalist to comment of her, “Like Oscar Wilde, what she writes is but a pale imitation of what she says.” In this footage – an interview with Gary Hyde for the popular music television show GTK screened by the Australian national broadcaster – Hyde asks Roxon if it’s true that New York “deals mainly in fringe music,” rather than more mainstream sounds. Roxon smiles widely and concedes that Hyde’s impression of the New York music scene is accurate: “If you want good, solid stuff, you’ve always had to go to the Midwest … But I think that’s what’s nice about New York, it is that it’s bizarre and it gives you a little glimpse into the future. You always know what’s going to happen from watching there. It’s fringe today but mainstream tomorrow.” It’s the sort of quotable statement we expect from someone who has been compared to Wilde. It also shows Roxon to be intimately familiar with the contours of the United States of America after more than a dozen years working as a journalist in New York.

    Syllabus for Women in Rock: From the 1950s to the 1980s Instructor: Richie Unterberger, [email protected] OLLI Berkeley Week One: Women in Rock: The Early Years and The Girl Groups In the 1950s, rhythm and blues singers like Ruth Brown and LaVern Baker have some of the first rock’n’roll hits; Wanda Jackson and the Collins Kids are top rockabilly acts; and Brenda Lee becomes the first woman rock superstar. As New York’s Brill Building becomes established as the top place for rock publishers, women like Carole King, Cynthia Weil, and Ellie Greenwich become some of pop-rock’s most successful songwriters. Girl groups like the Shirelles, the Crystals, the Ronettes, the Chiffons, and the Cookies have numerous hits in the early 1960s, forming one of the major trends in rock of the period. In the early 1960s, some of the most R&B-oriented girl groups become some of the first soul stars, especially for Motown Records, with the Marvelettes, Martha & the Vandellas, the Supremes, and Mary Wells. Week Two: Women in Soul and British Rock Women soul singers emerge throughout the country, some of them more pop-oriented (Maxine Brown, Dionne Warwick), some of them earthier (Carla Thomas, Irma Thomas, Etta James). Aretha Franklin is anointed the Queen of Soul after moving to Atlantic Records and adopting a tougher, more spiritual sound. Other women soul singers with a forceful style emerge and increase in popularity, like Gladys Knight, Nina Simone, and the Staple Singers. Although all-male guitar bands dominate the British Invasion, a good number of women singers also make an impact both in their native UK and in the US.

Considering the biographies of Germaine Greer’ Elizabeth Kleinhenz, Germaine: The Life of Germaine Greer (North Sydney, NSW: Penguin Random House, 2018), 423 pp., HB $39.99, ISBN 9780143782841 Christine Wallace, Germaine Greer: Untamed Shrew (Boston: Faber & Faber, 1999), 333 pp., HB $62.67, ISBN 9780571199341 Germaine Greer is one of the few living Australians to have been the subject of two biographies, the first, by Christine Wallace, published in 1997 and the 2018 volume by Elizabeth Kleinhenz. Wallace took time out of working as a journalist to research and write her biography. After publishing a biography of historian Kathleen Fitzpatrick, Kleinhenz was inspired to turn to another source in the University of Melbourne Archives, the newly acquired archive of Germaine Greer. For her landmark biography, Wallace interviewed many people who knew Greer, including her mother Peggy, and also the friends, lovers and other feminists willing to speak to her. Wallace read all she could locate that Greer had written or was written about her; in the pre-internet days aided by her access to newspaper clippings libraries. She also searched for traces of Greer in archives including at Sydney and Melbourne universities and the Star of the Sea convent. Kleinhenz acknowledges her debt to Wallace, whom she quotes extensively. She revisits many of the same secondary sources and interviews some friends and acquaintances, including students and teachers from Greer’s school. For more than a year Kleinhenz ‘delved into’ the Greer archive at the University of Melbourne. My interest in the Kleinhenz biography was aroused by what the archive might reveal about Greer.

    PART IX: 1960s Musiciansi The Hotel Albert became home to any number of rock musicians in the 1960s. This is the only part of the Albert‟s history that has been written about to any extent, chronicled in May 1968 an article in The Eye magazine by Lillian Roxon, author of Lillian Roxon’s Rock Encyclopedia. Roxon, a music journalist of the 1960s, has been called the “Mother of Rock.” Her article about the Hotel Albert called it the “New York home to rock‟s greatest.” It opens: It is the best of hotels, it is the worst of hotels; its prices are ridiculously high, its prices are astonishingly low; its corridors are filled to the brim with life, its corridors are perpetual reminders of death; staying there is the wildest, most exhilarating, dizzying, around-the-clock trip of all time; staying there is the most wretched, lonely terrifying, around-the-clock bummer of all eternity. So much for New York‟s Hotel Albert, whose distinction is not that it has housed some of the most influential rock personalities of our time (after all, so has Holiday Inn), but that it has affected them so deeply (in a way no impersonal Holiday Inn could ever hope to) that American popular music would probably never have been what it is today without it. Roxon lists dozens of musicians who stayed at the Albert: …the Paul Butterfield Blues Band got itself together under its roof;… Steve Gillette wrote his Sunshine Company hit there (“Back on the Street Again”), but was able to finish his other songs only after he moved out, which, in itself, is influence of a sort.

He excelled as a folklorist, composer, and singer of traditional folk, protest songs, folk-rock, jazz, blues, gospel, sacred music, lullabies, country and pop rock. His life was in many ways extraordinary and for many he seemed to embody the optimistic sense of radicalism combined with discontent that swept Australia from the early 1960s to the early 1970s. Donald Horne aptly described that era in his book title Time of Hope: Australia 1966-1972. Like Horne’s writing, much of Shearston's music was concerned with hope for a better world and like Horne Shearston life and cultural efforts were permeated with a deep love for Australia. Gary Shearston was born on 9th January 1939 in the town of Inverell in the New England region of northern New South Wales, but when his father left for war service the Shearstons moved to Gary's maternal grandparents farm 'Ayrdie' two miles outside of Tenterfield. When his father returned from war service he became a farmer there.1 Although it is easy to idealise rural life, it seems Gary's time there was happy.
