86 Australian Folklore 24, 2009 Industrial Song and Folksong Mark Gregory ABSTRACT: This essay explores the relationship between folksong in its classic state and songs and poems that report and describe life in industrial society—Industrial Songs. It also considers the tradition of industrial song in Australia, and finds it as important a strand as the bush tradition. An interesting recent find of researcher Peter Knox is Melinda Kendall's 'The Colliers Strike Song', published in the Illawarra Mercury, October 3, 1885. Melinda Kendall, mother of the poet Henry, was a 19th-century Australian writer, pioneer and teacher. The Colliers' Strike Song Come all ye jolly colliers, and colliers' wives as well, And listen to my ditty, for the truth I mean to tell; It's of a colliers' wage dispute, is the burden of my song; I mean to cheer you up, if it won't detain you long. For masters they are grumbling, in country and in town, They want to starve poor miners, by cutting wages down; But if you stick together, and every one be true, You are sure to be triumphant singing cock-a-doodle-doo. 7/10/2017 Media campaign: Jessie Lloyd’s Mission Songs Project – Wolfe Words Wolfe Words Writing, Publicity & Media Strategy Media campaign: Jessie Lloyd’s Mission Songs Project February 27, 2017June 1, 2017 The Songs Back Home is a collection of Australian Indigenous folk songs performed from 1900-1999 on Christian missions, settlements and native camps where Indigenous people were relocated. As part of her Mission Songs Project, Jessie Lloyd has spent the past two years faithfully exploring the journey of Indigenous Australian music, connecting traditional with contemporary, and charting continuing cultural practice and oral traditions well into the 21st century. The songs, largely hidden from the outside world, comprise rare and almost-forgotten stories, shedding light onto the history and experiences of Indigenous people, their families and communities. Jessie launched The Songs Back Home, the first of the Mission Songs Project collection, in March 2017 at the Brunswick Music Festival and is touring the album throughout the east coast of Australia. “The 20th Century songs composed and sung on Aboriginal missions and settlements are records of our history and history and tell us about the emotions and aspirations of their composers. I first met Nick Drake when I arrived in London after attending the Isle of Wight Pop Festival in 1969, which featured as its curtain-closer a very different Bob Dylan to the one I had seen in Sydney in March 1966. However, on thinking about it, Dylan’s more scaled down eclectic country music approach - which he revealed for the first time - kind of prepared me for what I was about to experience in London. The day after I arrived at my temporary London lodgings with friends living in Warwick Avenue, I went to Les Cousins in Greek Street. -

Terpsichorean Architecture: Editor’s Introduction Tony Mitchell, University of Technology Sydney In Peter Hoeg’s celebrated novel Miss Smilla’s Feeling for Snow (1992), Greenland- born Smilla says of her extraordinary ability to decipher patterns and read tracks in snow: ‘Reading snow is like listening to music. To describe what you’ve read is to try and describe music in writing’ (2005:37). Later in the book, Andreas Fine Licht, a blind Professsor of Eskimo Languages and Cultures at the Danish Institute of Eskimology, deciphers a tape recording of a native Greenlander speaking in dialect about hunting. He is also able to hear and identify in the background on the tape the jazz music of trumpeter Roy Louber, formerly of the John Coltrane quartet, in a rare live concert performance in Thule in the late 1960s (2005:134). The experience of listening to, or hearing and identifying music may, in both cases, be a complex one, but writing about it comprehensively and memorably can be even more complex and fraught with difficulties. This selection of papers comes from a Symposium held at the University of Technology Sydeny (UTS) in September 2009. The title derives from a notorious quote—now a cliché—from Elvis Costello in an interview in the British Musician magazine in 1983: ‘Writing about music is like dancing about architecture—it’s a really stupid thing to want to do’ (White 1983). Thank you for coming out on what’s been such a hot day, but what is going to be a very hot evening. I’m the Director of the State Library, my name is Bronwyn Halliday, and on behalf of the Board and of the staff of the State Library I’d really like to welcome everybody here tonight. Tonight’s event, Songlines, is the first of a series of events designed to promote the collections of the State Library, and in particular the audio-visual collections. Our collections are much more than books. They’re audio recordings, they’re films, they’re gramophone records there’s even some waxed cylinders out there. music Michael Atkinson (cast) Singing Hobo Russell Newman Music Performed by Ken Schroder Allan Browne Peter Gaudion John Withers Pip Avery Peter Cleaver Hugh McDonald Michael Spicer Michael Atkinson Music in the film: Russell Newman has a double role, appearing as a singing hobo in a Sydney underground railway station, and able to take credit cards (his other role is as the bank manager who gets Hec into trouble with credit cards). Hec's daughter Jo has aspirations in music, and wants to go to the NSW Conservatorium. Hec buys her a Yamaha PortaSound electronic keyboard (the PSS-460), but when she gets to the Con, she ends up playing a penny whistle and fleeing: Composer Michael Atkinson: Atkinson started his feature film composing career by doing the score for director Bill Bennett’s A Street to Die. He would go on to score a number of Bennett’s feature films, Backlash, Jilted and Dear Cardholder. As well as Stan and George's New Life, he also did Mull, Craig Lahiff's Heaven's Burning, three episodes of the telemovie crime series Halifax f.p. and in the first decade of the new millennium, many episodes of the TV cop show Blue Heelers. (Atkinson collaborated with Michael Easton on the Halifax f.p. scores). Atkinson started as a member of the folk rock band Redgum, and Redgum singer John Schumann's site provides this history of the band, online at time of writing here, later WM here, and Michael Atkinson's role in the band: When Brian Medlin, convenor of the Politics and Art course in 1975, suggested that some people might like to co-operate on a music project, three people raised their hands. -

Boyup Brook Country Music Festival 18 - 21 February, Boyup Brook Experience Western Australia’s premier Country Music Festival, featuring live music, WA’s biggest bush poet’s breakfast, street carnival, WA Country Music Awards, workshops and the Boyup Ute and Truck Muster. It only seems like yesterday that I was writing my last report. This year will be one of those years we will all remember as being a total disaster because of the terrible outbreak and the huge impact that the Corona virus has on not only us but the whole world. The Committee and I hope sincerely that apart from the impact of lockdowns, travel restrictions and disruptions to your normal life etc., that none of our members, families and extended families have been directly affected by the Virus and have been able to stay safe during these troubled times. We continue to have more members come forward these last few months to renew their membership, several who had never joined before. This is most gratifying for the Committee and we welcome them to this great organisation. If you are in contact with other mates from 101 Field Battery, who served either in SVN or in peacetime please ask if they are current members of the Association. It certainly lets people know what is happening to their mates from the past. The Committee still has not received very many profiles of our members, in particular the 1969/70 tour. We get a lot of comments from members who have read the previous profiles stating how much they enjoy them and to have questions answered as to what had happened to mates they lost touch with over the years.
