Summer 2020 CAPEL MANOR COLLEGE GOVERNING BODY CHAIR OF GOVERNORS: ROGER MCCLURE Roger McClure is Chair of the Governing Body, following important roles in further and higher education in England and Scotland. He is Chair of the Search, Governance and Remuneration Committee and a member of the Strategy Committee and the Finance and Resources Committee. Roger was Chairman of Janet (UK); Chief Executive of the Scottish Funding Council for further and higher education; and of the Learning and Skills Improvement Service in England; Pro-Rector of the London Institute (now the University of the Arts London); Director of Finance of the Further Education Funding Council; and of the Polytechnics and Colleges Funding Council; Financial Adviser to the University Grants Committee; and special adviser to the Parliamentary Education Select Committee. He has been a board and committee member of King’s College London; the City Literary Institute; the Institute of Employment Studies; and the Business and Technology Council. He also has a keen interest in gardening and orchard/woodland management as he owns and manages a large garden himself. PRINCIPAL AND CHIEF EXECUTIVE: MALCOLM GOODWIN Malcolm was appointed Principal and Chief Executive in 2017 having previously been Deputy Principal at Capel Manor since 2013. Before that he led Horticulture, Arboriculture and Floristry at Moulton College whilst undertaking research into Agroforestry and was Course Director for Horticulture at The College of West Anglia. Before education Malcolm Goodwin was most latterly in charge of the gardens and estate at Borde Hill in Sussex and has also managed gardens, woodlands, landscapes, livestock and land based businesses at The Lost Gardens of Heligan, Painshill Park and Windsor Great Park. His first career was in information and business systems and he worked for The Department of Health, Capgemini Consulting, The Channel Tunnel Project, Thames Water, The European Space Agency and Carlton TV (ITV). He a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Gardeners, Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Horticulture and a Fellow of the Linnaean Society. CLERK TO THE CORPORATION AND COMPANY SECRETARY: JOANNE COFFEY Joanne is Clerk to the Corporation and Company Secretary for Capel Manor Limited, Enfield Veg. Co. Limited and Forty Hall Community Vineyard Limited. Jo has been with the College since 2016 and has also worked as a psychotherapist and writer. z:\governance\library\governors\biographies\governor biographies summer 2020.doc DR HEATHER BARRETT-MOLD OBE Dr Heather Barrett-Mold is a former Principal of a land-based college and is now an independent consultant focusing predominately on the learning and skills sector. She has been the Chair of the IES Council (Institution of Environmental Sciences), now Vice President, and a Secretary of State appointment to the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty Conservation Board. Heather is a board member of Perennial and of the Science Council. She was a co- opted expert for the Commission for a Sustainable London 2012 and was previously President of the Chartered Institute of Horticulture. Her passion for the environment and for science is long standing. Heather is Chair of the Strategy Committee, Vice Chair of the Academic Committee and a member of the Finance and Resources and the Search, Governance and Remuneration Committees. PATRICIA BROWN Hon FRIBA Patricia Brown is an urban strategist, advising civic and business leaders on urban change and building public private partnerships to translate this to action. Over the past twenty or so years, she has spearheaded a series of major initiatives designed to put quality of life and people at the front and centre of city making, and vastly improve the experience of the capital and help maintain a vibrant city and strong economy. As CEO of Central London Partnership, she championed some of London’s most significant urban changes. This included the pedestrianisation of Trafalgar Square, Legible London, the capital’s wayfinding system, and the establishment of Business Improvement Districts in the UK, which helped establish the cross sector collaboration that we enjoy to this day. She commissioned a range of work to make the case for investment in walking and cycling, including the seminal Public life public space study by Gehl Architects that led directly to Grosvenor’s own commission. She is currently Vice-Chair of the British Property Federation’s Development Committee, chairing its Great Places Campaign. She chaired London Festival of Architecture from 2013-16 and was Vice-Chair of the Mayor’s Design Advisory Group, where she was behind the Good Growth agenda, now at the core to the London Plan. She is currently taking forward a new initiative called London 3.0; a focus on London’s evolution over the last twenty years and its current multi-dimensional challenges and solutions to address them. She sits on a number of boards, including the National Trust’s London Advisory Board and Historic England’s high streets strategic advisory panel and HS2 Design Panel. As well as her stamp on London, Patricia works across the UK and in New York, where she has advised the Times Square Alliance since 2006, and stints teaching at NYC Schack institute of Real Estate, as well as collaborating with and advising the City of New York and other institutions. She was awarded an honorary RIBA Fellowship in 2017 for services to architecture and the built environment. PAUL CAMPBELL Paul-Anthony Campbell is Chair of the Health and Safety Committee and a member of the Strategy Committee. Paul is a landscape and urban designer and his horticultural career began at Capel Manor in 1991. Paul has Bachelors and Masters Degrees in spatial planning, urban environmental design and landscape architecture together with three diplomas in horticulture and landscape design. He is currently the Parks Projects and Strategy Manager at Brighton & Hove City Council, where his role is to develop all of the open spaces across the city. He previously worked for the Mayor of London as a landscape and urban design advisor in the London Development Agency and Transport for London for six years. Paul is also an advisor to the Department for Education Technical-Level, the National Trust Historic Environment Group and the Royal Horticultural Society Community Engagement Committee. DR BERYL DE SOUZA Dr Beryl De Souza was appointed as a Governor at the Governing Body meeting on 4 April 2012. She is a Member of the Health and Safety Committee. Dr De Souza is an Honorary Senior Lecturer in Plastic Surgery at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital. She is involved in a number of organisations including the Medical Women’s Federation (MWF) of which she is Honorary Secretary for the London region, the British Medical Association (BMA) of which she is a member of the Community Care Committee and Trustee of Enfield Racial and Equality Council (EREC). She has a strong interest in education and is keen on the promotion of Capel Manor College to the local communities and to a wider network. PETER DOBLE Peter Doble was appointed to the Corporation in December 2018 and is Vice Chair of the Finance and Resources Committee. Peter comes from a farming background, but has lived in Enfield for the last 18 years. He is a qualified public finance accountant (CIPFA) and has worked in the public sector in London since 1981 with just a three year break to work in the Pacific for the then Overseas Development Administration (now DfID). He worked in the Further Education sector as Finance Director, Vice Principal and at times Principal from 1994 until his retirement from full time work in 2018. He has extensive knowledge of all aspects of the Further Education sector, particularly with regards to its finances, funding and audit requirements. He is focused on ensuring the College maintains its current strong financial position while at the same time investing in and developing its facilities and resources to benefit its students. DR SHEILA CUNNINGHAM Dr. Sheila Cunningham is an Associate Professor at Middlesex University with a current role as Director for Learning and Teaching in the school of Health and Education. with a role in developing teaching. Sheila originally trained as a nurse at the Royal Free hospital and following years of clinical experience decided to make a difference by teaching nurses and other healthcare professionals at university. She is keen on curriculum development and equality and inclusive learning with an active interest in European exchanges under the former Erasmus mobility programme coordinating and managing Erasmus and International exchanges for nursing students. Sheila is also actively engaged with her local community as a former school governor, her local church community and also various other charities. DAVID DOMONEY FCI HORT David Domoney is a television gardening personality. David is a Chartered Fellow and Ambassador of The Institute of Horticulture and sits on the Royal Horticultural Society Commercial Board. He pioneered the Young Gardeners of the Year competition in association with the Princes Foundation for Building Community (now in its tenth year). Over 750 students from around Britain have had first-hand experience building show gardens, David has won 30 Royal Horticultural Society Medals for his show gardens to date, including gold at Chelsea Flower Show. He has an award from Prince Edward for Excellence in Horticulture. DOUGLAS FUSSELL Douglas Fussell is Vice Chair of Governors. Doug has a personal interest in the College and the Gardens both from a horticultural point of view and the amenities provided to the community. He is a Chartered Accountant and former Managing Partner of the Enfield office of Moore Stephens, a national and international group of accounting firms. He is Chair of the Finance and Resources Committee and Vice Chair of the Search, Governance and Remuneration Committee and takes a keen interest in the operation of the College, both from an Educational point of view and as a grounding for future careers in business.
