The Journal recognizes and supports the many diverse perspectives and methods across the several social sciences; it neither espouses nor champions any specific ideological, theoretical, methodological, or political commitments. The Journal is committed to intellectual integrity, rigorous standards of scholarship, and rational and civil discourse. It encourages the presentation and free exchange of diverse viewpoints and seeks to foster open and critical inquiry that privileges no particular standpoint while operating within the limits of a standard of discourse and reason that distinguishes between the pursuit of knowledge and truth versus mere assertions of dogma. Although every effort will be made to publish issues that represent a fair balance of scholarship across the entire spectrum of social science disciplines, the Journal’s first priority will always be to publish the best social science research available at any given time, regardless of disciplinary representation. Toward this end, papers will be accepted for editorial review and publication in the annual issue of the journal at any time of year, whether or not they were presented at the Annual Conference. Persons who submit articles for review are expected to adhere to Author Submission Guidelines detailed elsewhere in this journal and online at www.iass1.org. The Journal has been published annually in the fall both in print and online since Volume 14 (2010–2011). Articles submitted for possible publication are subject to a double-blind review process. The Senior Editor in Chief alone is responsible for making the final decision on all manuscripts and content for publication in the Journal, and the Senior Editor’s decision on publication content is not subject to review by any other member, officer, or body of the Indiana Academy of the Social Sciences. v 7 Midwest Social Sciences Journal, Vol. 23 [2020], Iss. 1, Art. 15 SENIOR EDITOR’S NOTE Volume 23 (2020) of MSSJ represents my final issue as Senior Editor. I am very pleased to be turning the editor’s role over to the incoming Co-Senior Editors, Nirupama Deveraj and Bharath Ganesh Babu, both of Valparaiso University. Niru and Bharath currently serve as Deputy Editors and have been actively involved in the IASS over the past decade. I have no doubt they will carry forward the best traditions, knowledge, and innovation that have marked the journal for these past 10 years. I wish them every success as the new coeditors of this journal. This year’s volume offers eight richly researched and dynamic papers on the themes of discrimination and inclusion-exclusion, overlapping with law, deviance, and crime, explored from several social science disciplines and time periods. The first paper is an invited research essay from Professor Laura Wilson on the topic of how far women have come politically since the 19th Amendment, granting women the right to vote, was ratified 100 years ago—and how far they have to go to gain equity and inclusion in political life and participation as citizens in our country. Dr. Wilson graciously stepped in to write her paper on a topic parallel to Dr. Christina Wolbrecht’s 2019 Keynote presentation at our annual meeting at Valparaiso University, after Dr. Wolbrecht was unable to do so. Following up on the theme of women’s exclusion from major academic roles as doctoral students and professors, Bruce Bigelow introduces readers to the remarkable life and career of one Indiana woman, Elfrieda Lang, who bravely defied the odds and obstacles to earn a PhD in history from Indiana University in 1950, at the age of 46. As Dr. Bigelow notes, “In 1950, 288 doctorates were awarded to history students in American universities, of which 31 (9 percent), including Lang, were females.” Women’s positions in higher education in the United States today have certainly advanced in some major ways, though they continue to lag in others. Even while the overall majority of doctorates in the United States are awarded to women, with women well ahead of men in such fields as public administration, health sciences, education, arts, humanities, and the social-behavioral sciences, men earn the lion’s share of doctorates in the STEM fields of “engineering (76.6%), mathematics and computer sciences (74.9%) and physical and earth sciences (65.9%)” (CGS/GRE Graduate Enrollment & Degrees: 2007–2017

It is meant to disseminate what we have deemed important information throughout our studies. This information may be used as a tool for all people, women in particular, who wish to dismantle the oppressions they face externally, and within their own lives. We are two men and one woman attempting to grasp at how we can deconstruct the patriarchal foundations upon which we perceive an unjust society has been built. We hope that at least some component of this work will be found useful to a variety of readers. This Zine is meant to be an introduction into anarcha-feminism, its origins, applications, and potentials. Buen provecho! We acknowledge that anarcha-feminism has historically been a western theory; thus, unfortunately, much of this ziners content reflects this limitation. However, we have included some information and analysis on worldwide anarcha-feminists as well as global women's struggles which don't necessarily identify as anarchist.

Linear feet of shelf space occupied: 25 Number of items: Approx: 3465 Scope and Contents Note The Radical Pamphlet Collection spans the years 1870-1980 but is especially rich in the 1930-49 period. The collection includes pamphlets, newspapers, periodicals, broadsides, posters, cartoons, sheet music, and prints relating primarily to American communism, socialism, and anarchism. The largest part deals with the operations of the Communist Party, USA (CPUSA), its members, and various “front” organizations. Pamphlets chronicle the early development of the Party; the factional disputes of the 1920s between the Fosterites and the Lovestoneites; the Stalinization of the Party; the Popular Front; the united front against fascism; and the government investigation of the Communist Party in the post-World War Two period. Many of the pamphlets relate to the unsuccessful presidential campaigns of CP leaders Earl Browder and William Z. Foster. Earl Browder, party leader be—tween 1929—46, ran for President in 1936, 1940 and 1944; William Z. Foster, party leader between 1923—29, ran for President in 1928 and 1932. Pamphlets written by Browder and Foster in the l930s exemplify the Party’s desire to recruit the unemployed during the Great Depression by emphasizing social welfare programs and an isolationist foreign policy.

Bringing together original historical research on the radical press and close readings of Yiddish avant-garde poetry by Moyshe-Leyb Halpern, Peretz Markish, Yankev Glatshteyn, and others, I show that the development of anarchist modernism was both a transnational literary trend and a complex worldview. My research draws from hitherto unread material in international archives to document the world of the Yiddish anarchist press and assess the scope of its literary influence. The dissertation’s theoretical framework is informed by diaspora studies, gender studies, and translation theory, to which I introduce anarchist diasporism as a new term.

Luckily for local res- idents, the venues in which the LCSO performs— LaPorte’s Civic Auditorium, the Presbyterian Church of LaPorte, and the First Presbyterian Church in Michigan City—make it an easy, close-to-home, has- sle-free drive. The high quality of the LCSO’s per- formances brings raves and kudos from discrimi- nating listeners. Reflecting back on the Movie Magic Classic Concert presented last month in Michigan City, Mary Kelley said that she and other audience members were moved to tears by “the incredible performance” of the two teenaged Young Artists Competition winners, a 13-year old violinist and a 15-year old pianist. “Everyone in the audience was crying and clapping,” Mary said. “The two young musicians were so poised in front of all those people.” The event drew a crowd of well over 200, according to LCSO Executive Director Tonya McGue. As word continues to spread about the superb musical talent within arm’s reach, the audi- ence numbers continue to expand.     Purdue University Galleries Educational Ideas and Activities 2004-2005 Written by Susan Uhlig Adams, Forsyth and Steele 1/10/04-2/20/04 Ringel Gallery Paintings by three Hoosier regionalists from the Lilly Foundation and the Indianapolis Museum of Art Did you know? • Theodore Clement Steele, John Otis Adams, and William Forsythe (along with Otto Starke and Richard Gruelle) were dubbed the “Hoosier Group” by a reporter at the 1893 Chicago Exposition. • Indiana was the only state represented at the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis with its own building featuring the work of the Hoosier Group. • Steele, Forsyth, and Adams studied abroad together at the Royal Academy in Munich, Germany. • T.C. Steele was originally from Waveland, Indiana. • T.C. Steele purchased over 200 acres of land in the hills of Brown County for about $1 an acre in 1907. He and his second wife, Selma, built a studio and home for Steele and named it “House of the Singing Winds” (image above depicts the House of the Singing Winds, by Steele, in 1908).
