Reporters Without Borders TV5 Monde Prize 2015 Nominees Journalist Category Mahmoud Abou Zeid, aka Shawkan (Egypt) “I am a photojournalist, not a criminal,” Shawkan wrote from Tora prison in February. “My indefinite detention is psychologically unbearable. Not even animals would survive in these conditions." Shawkan is an Egyptian freelance photojournalist who has been in pretrial detention for more than 760 days. He was arrested on 14 August 2013 while providing the US photojournalism agency Demotix and the US digital media company Corbis with coverage of the violence used to disperse demonstrations by deposed President Mohamed Morsi’s supporters in Rabiaa AlAwadiya Square. Three journalists were killed that day in connection with their work Aged 28, Shawkan covered developments in Egypt closely from Mubarak’s fall to Morsi’s overthrow and on several occasions obtained striking shots of the popular unrest. His detention became illegal in August of this year because, under Egyptian law, pretrial detention may surpass two years only in exceptional cases. Few people in Egypt have ever been held pending trial as long as him. A date has finally been set for the start of his trial, 12 December 2015, when he will be prosecuted before a Cairo criminal court along with more than 700 other defendants including members of the Muslim Brotherhood, which was declared a terrorist organization in December 2013. Many charges have been brought against him without any evidence, according to his lawyer, Karim Abdelrady. The most serious include joining a banned organization [the Muslim Brotherhood], murder, attacking the security forces and possession of weapons. -

ETHICS FOR DIGITAL JOURNALISTS The rapid growth of online media has led to new complications in journalism ethics and practice. While traditional ethical principles may not fundamentally change when information is disseminated online, applying them across platforms has become more challenging as new kinds of interactions develop between jour- nalists and audiences. In Ethics for Digital Journalists , Lawrie Zion and David Craig draw together the international expertise and experience of journalists and scholars who have all been part of the process of shaping best practices in digital journalism. Drawing on contemporary events and controversies like the Boston Marathon bombing and the Arab Spring, the authors examine emerging best practices in everything from transparency and verifi cation to aggregation, collaboration, live blogging, tweet- ing, and the challenges of digital narratives. He wrote and researched the 2007 documentary The Sounds of Aus , which tells the story of the Australian accent. David Craig is a Professor of Journalism and Associate Dean at the University of Oklahoma in the United States. Th e funeral, the culmination of a week of mourning, took place at St Mary ’ s of the Angle on Morehouse Road. Th e congregation and many more, who could not fi t into the packed church, processed through Notting Hill to the West London Crematorium. Th e size and diversity of the crowd was a testament to the breadth of respect that Crichlow commanded. Th e mourners included the biggest names from Britain ’ s Black Power Movement including Howe, Althea Jones-Lecointe and her husband Eddie who had fl own in from Trinidad for the occasion, as well as Rhodan Gordon. Th ere were also more mainstream black activists and politicians such as Lee Jasper and Paul Boateng; the fi lm maker Horace Ové and hundreds of ordinary people, not political in any obvious sense, whose lives Crichlow had touched. Boateng gave the eulogy, recalling Crichlow ’ s activism, his smile, and his ‘ grace under pressure, and boy was there pressure ’ (Boateng 2010). -

It examines the different actor types on the social media platform to reveal patterns of sourcing used by the NPR social media strategist, who emerged as a key broker of information on Twitter during the Arab Spring. News sourcing is a critical element in the practice of journalism as it shapes from whom journalists get their information and what type of information they obtain. Numerous studies have shown that journalists privilege elite sources who hold positions of power in society. This study evaluates whether networked and distributed social media platforms such as Twitter expand the range of actors involved in the construction of the news through a quantitative content analysis of the sources cited by Carvin. The results show that non-elite sources had a greater influence over the content flowing through his Twitter stream than journalists or other elite sources. -

Gelms As our digital environments—in their inhabitants, communities, and cultures—have evolved, harassment, unfortunately, has become the status quo on the internet (Duggan, 2014 & 2017; Jane, 2014b). Harassment is an issue that disproportionately affects women, particularly women of color (Citron, 2014; Mantilla, 2015), LGBTQIA+ women (Herring et al., 2002; Warzel, 2016), and women who engage in social justice, civil rights, and feminist discourses (Cole, 2015; Davies, 2015; Jane, 2014a). Whitney Phillips (2015) notes that it’s politically significant to pay attention to issues of online harassment because this kind of invective calls “attention to dominant cultural mores” (p. 7). Keeping our finger on the pulse of such attitudes is imperative to understand who is excluded from digital publics and how these exclusions perpetuate racism and sexism to “preserve the internet as a space free of politics and thus free of challenge to white masculine heterosexual hegemony” (Higgin, 2013, n.p.). While rhetoric and writing as a field has a long history of examining myriad exclusionary practices that occur in public discourses, we still have much work to do in understanding how online harassment, particularly that which is gendered, manifests in digital publics and to what rhetorical effect. -

Sarabia 1 Jacob Sarabia Art is Resistance: The Role of the Artist in the Arab Spring and other Uprisings Assault rifles, tear gas, grenades and riot shields are commonly thought of as the principal weapons of the now ubiquitous uprising across several nations that has come to be known as the Arab Spring. In Tunisia, Egypt, Syria, and over a dozen other countries, these weapons have come to be known as common tools of institutionalized oppression, be it Mubarak’s Egypt or Sultan Qaboos’s Oman (AP). From its start in late 2010 to the ongoing crises in Syria and Egypt, the peoples of the Arab world have had to quickly acclimate to the brutal tactics entrenched regimes have resorted to in order to keep them in line. Demonstrations became louder, fiercer and harder to quell, with the public responding to the governments’ attempts to silence them. In the 21st Century, revolution has become a global affair. No longer did each of these nations have to face their governments alone. In the post-internet world, political activists now had platforms to reach people thousands of miles away, as well as a way to legitimize their cause (Maher). This new wave of involved activism has indeed sired many movements beyond the Arab Spring, from the Euromaidan protests occurring in Ukraine to the more directly inspired “Venezuelan Spring” unfolding alongside it. All of these movements share a desire for freedom, expression and a voice in government, and they do it by communicating on an international scale, demanding attention from other nations and their people. -

This data is pieced together, shared, aggregated, and used in real-time auctions, fueling a $227 billion-a-year industry.1 This occurs every day, as people go about their daily lives, often without their knowledge or permission.3,4 Let’s take a look at what this industry is able to learn about a father and daughter during an otherwise pleasant day at the park. Not ours - well not personally - but our country’s: the UK’s, or if you prefer, the government’s. Forget a couple of hundred quid overdrawn or a few thousand on a credit card or to buy a car. Today we’re talking international debt - a trillion pounds, a million million pounds, and growing by more than a hundred billion a year. It’s about £13,000 for each person in the UK, and over the next 5 years that will almost double to just under £24,000 each. Today I’m going on a journey to find out when this debt began, how it’s grown, and see if I can reduce it. What must politicians do to get us to agree to real cuts? And what if they don’t? Finally, how does this growing debt affect our own personal finances? But, first, that word deficit. What does it mean? Blogs: What Are They??
BLOGS: WHAT ARE THEY?? Blogs are a contemporary form of journalism. To answer the title question, we may build our reply using several of the questions journalists are trained to address. When did blogs appear on the scene? The term blog has its earliest direct roots in on-line diaries which appeared in 1994 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_blogging). It was not until 1997 that the term “weblog” was coined to describe this form of communication; by 1999, it finally morphed into simply blog. In 2004, Meriam-Webster cataloged the word blog as a legitimate dictionary denizen. Ian Ring is credited with being the inventor (or parent) of the blog in 1997. As noted above, in its earliest years the blog appeared primarily as an on line diary or serial of the life and times of its author(s). Today’s blogs are adolescents in linguistic terms and they have outgrown all of their early childhood clothing to take on a host of very different appearances. An early Ted Talk includes commentary on the young years of blogging. Mena Trott in 2006 recounts some of her early experiences with blogging she began in 2001 ( https:// www.ted.com/talks/mena_trott_tours_her_blog_world ). Now, some 10 years after this Ted Talk, blogs have undergone explosive growth in both content and numbers, achieving a stature only dimly envisioned by their parents. We now encounter blog as just one of a whole host of terms building upon it including blogger, blogging, liveblogging, photoblog, microblog, moblog and a host of others. What purposes can blogs serve? Want to inform, teach, convince, amuse, sway, share, sell, defend, support or refute something? • Long and short of it – blogs are contemporary forms of journalism in the broadest sense of the art.
